The thing about this song is, it was originally written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Don Kirshner originally wanted the boys to sing it just like a normal song...no wisecracks. The Monkees, along with Boyce and Hart, thought the song would be dull and kinda stupid...and if you think about it, it would be!! So...they had a trick up their sleeve to just ad lib funny things during the recording, without Kirshner's consent. When they finally did it, Don Kirshner ended up loving it, and it was released on "The Monkees" album. |

I personally, am not sure what this song means altogether, but I know I first heard this song from my cousin when he was playing it in his mom's car. I listened to it, and I heard the names "Jack Gilardi" (yes that's how it's spelled) and "Frankie Avalon." Those names really appealed to me because of the fact that both of them are connected with Annette Funicello. During the 60's, Jack Gilardi was Annette's agent, and they later got married (their son is Jason Gilardi from "Caroline's Spine). While Frankie on the other hand, as we all know, was supposed to be in love with Annette in the "Beach Party" movies. I thought it was kinda funny because they chose two of the guys mentioned in the song that supposidly were "Annette's guys"...one in the movies, and one in real life. |
