you sound like you are expecting hip hop to exhibit the characteristics of what makes good rock music "good," which is unfair being that hip hop is a form of music very separate and unique from other music. the theme isn't all that important, it's what you do within your own context that is. if you don't enjoy punchlines and wordplay then you won't like rap lyrics, regardless of the subject matter. also, you mention that you think the beats are "repetitive." first of all, the beat has to be repetitive to some extent in order for a rapper to be able to develop a rhyme scheme over it. furthermore, all music has to be repetitive to some extent, that's what meter is for. rock musicians have been using the same or similar time signatures and chord progressions for decades so the "boring/repetitive" argument really doesn't ring true unless you dislike almost all modern music. |

"oh, your allowed to like it, it just means you have no brain either" Nope, that's not what it means at all. It just means that I enjoy a style of music that you do not enjoy. It's no one's fault, and it certainly doesn't mean that anyone lacks a brain. In fact, I would contest that there's a good chance I'm more intelligent than you... although of course that's just speculation. Long story short: you're going to need a much more logical argument if you expect anyone to give a damn about your opinion. Next: "Sure, not every song has to be "deep and meaningful", but I expect it to at least be coherent. Notice how nobody has attempted to decipher the meaning of this song? That's because it's so incoherent and random that it doesnt' have one at all." No offense, but it's obvious that you don't know a thing about hip hop. What makes hip hop so great is the fact that anyone can do it. Anyone, and I mean anyone, can get on a mic and say whatever the hell they want to. Maybe it'll make sense, maybe it'll be nonsense. Maybe it'll be fun and uplifting, maybe it'll be hardcore and serious. As long as the beat is hot and it flows, it's all gravy. It's not about crafting a beautiful piece of songwriting, it's about skill and charisma. If this idea doesn't appeal to you, then by all means, listen to your rock records. But choosing to act like a snob because you don't like the music is only indicative of a crappy elitist personality. BTW, this is coming from a person who listens to many styles of music, from hip hop to soul to classic rock to IDM to indie rock. Long story short: your opinion isn't as wonderful or interesting as I'm sure you'd like it to be. Next: "This song is stupid! A monkey could say "Drop it like its hott"! But yet....i like this song" Yup, and that's exactly what's so great about it (and, of course, the beat is fire). Finally, someone who gets it. Huzzah to you, good sir. |

this beat is fire, the neptunes are everything right now. everyone who is complaining about the lyrics lacking substance, you have made it very clear that this music was not made for you. you get two thumbs up for being too enlightened or whatever to enjoy it, but plz don't act like we can't like it, because at that point you have crossed into snob territory... and that's not a place anyone wants to be. |

Oh and btw, would you accuse yourself of "believing the hype" back when the Strokes and the White Stripes were on every magazine cover being praised as the "Saviors of Rock and Roll" back in '01 I think it was? OR, did you just like their music? *light bulb flashes over head* |

Aha, dude, you're a clown on wheels and you don't even know it. You really think you're an enlightened individual, don't you? Sorry buddy, but you most definitely are not. You are 100% goofball if you think anyone who likes the Arctic Monkeys is even going to come close to caring if some clown-ass dude posts on the internet saying they shouldn't like AM's music for god knows what reason. Furthermore, please refrain from referring to people as "fanboys" just because they enjoy a band's music. Shit is thoroughly played out, homie. Oh, and for the record, I had never even heard of NME until I read your post. So way to go on that... you truly are a champ. And like I said earlier, I'm really not all that into the Arctic Monkeys myself. I really listen to more hip hop than rock, anyway. My argument isn't necessarily FOR the Arctic Monkeys... just against you and your type (your type being internet elitists/pseudo-intellectuals who lack intellect). So, in conclusion... you are most definitely wasting your time and ours by trying to force your played-out opinions on us, when we truly, TRULY, just do not care about you or what you have to say whatsoever. You are less than nothing. You are some 1s and 0s floating through cyberspace. Most of us would probably much rather be listening to AM's album than wasting braincells reading your worthless posts. You really just come off as 100% asshole to everyone on here. And you can quote me on that. So let us listen to our music, and you can listen to your amazing political songs (man, war really blows, doesn't it?). Peace on Earth, dude! |

| Hey, I'm not taking the Arctic Monkeys too seriously or overstating their significance or any of that. I don't really even listen to them very often. I think they're pretty good, but nothing particularly amazing. But people who take their elitist opinions as gospel and complain on the internet about people enjoying music that they apparently shouldn't enjoy for whatever reason bother me. That's all. | |

| This song is great. Reminds me of The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. | |

Lukefun... haha, what an appropriate screen name. You are among the many internet music cynics who need very much to collectively lighten up. What makes the Arctic Monkeys special? How about the fact that they broke the record for fastest-selling debut album ever? Face it dude, A LOT of people like their music. That's what makes them special. "... singing about some girl doesn't really qualify. If they sung about real world issues, like war, fascism and bullying, then I might believe them." Come on dude, you can't be serious. The majority of Arctic Monkeys' members aren't even 21 yet. You think they are going to enlighten the world with philosophical musings about the state of the world? Probably not. What they CAN offer us, however, are clever, well-written songs that reflect THEIR own personal world-view. The Arctic Monkeys have become so popular by writing fun, thoughtful songs about everyday life, which is what most people can relate to. I'm sorry that you can't relate to their songs, but obviously a lot of people can, so there's really no need for you to talk down about them. Also, you're really a joke if you expect every band's songs to deal with politics and the like. That's not really what music is about. Music is about writing and recording songs that people will enjoy. People clearly enjoy the Arctic Monkeys' music, or else they wouldn't be gaining so much popularity so quickly. Did the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, U2, or the Clash gain their immense level of popularity by writing preachy anti-war songs? Nope. Even the Beatles were very good at keeping their politics separate from their music. And they were better for it. Blah, I'm done arguing for now. However, I think it would do you some good, lukefun, to take a glance at the Arctic Monkey's song "Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But...." Maybe you will at least be able to relate to that song... you vampire, you. |
