I personally think this song is about 3 itself, as a band, claiming victory over their past where they were held back by producers and such, and now are able to show their true sound and take the world by storm. The band is going to get you, no matter where you turn, because they are finally set loose to do what they do best. The iron bones of the band will never die because their music will be timelessly embedded in the hearts and minds of those who hear it. The band was once flown by drones, or controlled by suits who wouldn't let them do their own thing, but now the drones have been overthrown and the band is no longer held back. Yet, despite the band's maturing into their own sound now without being held back, they still fight for attention from the public because their sound is so indefinable and changes so often - "please tell me why you turn to stone" - Joey wants to know why so many people don't know how to respond to the music. Just me speculating. |

The stupidity of the users on this site never ceases to astound me. Put some fucking THOUGHT into your posts, idiots. The song is about hypocracy. In an interview, Adam Jones said himself that the line, "Who are you to wave your finger?" is in reference to "the pot calling the kettle black". Tool purposely lined the lyrics with apparent drug references to hide the true meaning of the song from those who are shallow enough to think it truely is about drugs. Here...let me break it down for those of you whose IQ's seem to be equivalent to that of a tick. "Who are you to wave your finger? / You must have been out 'your head" = He's calling the person a hypocrite, saying that he must have been mad to think that he was any better than anyone else. "Eyehole deep in muddy waters / You practically raise the dead" = The hypocrite is up to his eyes in trouble, so to speak, with his act of greatness. Yet he continues to act high-and-mighty as if he's better than everyone else. "You practically raise the dead" is a metaphor for the hypocrite acting as if he's on par with God. "Rob the grave to snow the cradle / Then burn the evidence down" = The hypocrite performs immoral acts and profits from them. "Snow the cradle" could be considered a metaphor for "showering one's home in riches." This shows that the hypocrite has gained his self-proclaimed "greatness" (i.e. wealth) through improper means. The hypocrite then proceeds to attempt to cover up his doings. "Soapbox house of cards and glass" = The hypocrite preaches as if he knows better than they, yet the base on which his points rest is as sturdy as a house of cards. It's easily shattered, like glass. "So don't go tossin' your stones around" = This is another common statement about hypocrites altered into Keenan's own words: "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones." "You must've been high" = The hypocrite must've been really high on himself to actually think he was better than anyone else. "Foot in mouth and head up ass / So what’chu talkin' 'bout?" = Again calling the person a hypocrite, this time two times in succsession, and in different words each time. "God your foot in your mouth" and "God your head up your ass". "Difficult to dance ‘round this one / ‘Til you pull it out, boy" = A bit hard to show someone how hypocritical he is unless he pulls his foot out of his mouth or his head from his ass, isn't it? "Steal, borrow, reaper, savior / Shady inference" = The difference between right and wrong is presented here; opposite sides of the spectrum, if you will. Sealing is to reaper as borrow is to savior. The hypocrite has been stealing, as evidenced in the earlier lyric, "Rob the grave to snow the cradle". "Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent" = This applies to the term "kangaroo court," in reference to shady and improper trial proceedings. Here, it's telling the hypocrite that his ways are like that of a kangaroo court: shady and improper (i.e. stealing). "Now you're weepin' shades of chosen indigo / Got lemon juice up in your eye / When you pissed all over my black kettle" = The metaphor of the hypocrite urinating on the other's kettle is used to describe the hypocrite disregarding what the others say against him as unimportant garbage. Similar to peeling/squeezing a lemon and it squirting its stinging juice into his eye, his urine (i.e. his downtalking of what the others warned him of: the warnings they gave him of the consequences for becoming too prideful) has splashed back up off the kettle into his eye, stinging. He now realizes what he's been doing was wrong and breaks into tears, regretting his immoral deeds. This is metaphorically explained with the line, "Now you're weepin' chosen shades of indigo" in that he chose this path, yet is now crying in regret over it. He chose his own fate, his own tears, if you will. "So full of it" = Referring to when he was being prideful and holier-than-thou: his statements proved he was full of shit with his almost Godlike claims of being so great. "Fuckin' hypocrite" = Check and mate. This line fully proves my theory. "Liar, lawyer" = This further ties into the earlier line referencing the term "kangaroo court". "Mirror, show me what's the difference?" = Reference to Snow White and the queen's magic mirror. The queen would request the mirror to show her who the greatest one of all was. Here, the person is saying that all are equal: no one is better than any other. "Weeping shades of indigo / Shed without a reason" = The people still don't know how he became so wealthy and prideful; they know not of his wrongdoings or what he's crying over. He is crying over those wrongdoings, yet they do not know that. They cannot figure out the reason for his tears. "Mirror, for you what's the difference?" = A mirror has no sense of preference or bias; it simply shows what's put in front of it. It knows not what ego, stature, position, or power are; it shows anyone, no matter what part they play in society. This can be seen as the basic idea of all being equal. All are simply human. "Kangaroo be stoned / He's guilty as the government" = The hypocrite has been sentenced to death by stoning by the government, which is hypocritical in and of itself.The government is just as guilty as the "kangaroo courts" themselves for allowing them to happen, for not having a way of stopping them from happening. "Eyeballs deep in bloody waters" = His own blood has been shed from all the trouble he's built upon himself. "Ganja police, you must've been out 'your mind" = Ganja is a slang term for cannabis, the plant form of marijuana. Similar to the government not having a surefire way of preventing kangaroo courts, police trying to uphold the anti-marijuana laws really can't do anything to stop the drug from getting around and being used, no matter how hard they'd like to try. This could be a metaphor (again disguised as a drug reference) for the hypocrite.in that no matter how much the people tried to tell him he was no better than anyone else and that acting that way was wrong, there was no getting through to him. Sometimes there is just no way to stop certain problems though some wish they could. |

Alright...deep song, but I'll attempt to tackle it. I think this song is about being trapped in yourself, but not being allowed access to the real you. Think of it as an impenetrable-but-see-through cage, and no matter how hard you try, you can't get a grip on the real you just on the other side of the invisible wall. The following is nothing more than my personal opinion on each line's meaning. Keep the word OPINION in mind. "I found a piece of what I want to find." = He's always wanted to find his true self, and he's finally found a small piece of it. "I got a taste of What's on the outside." = He's behind an invisible but impenetrable wall on the other side of which is his true self, the real him...and he's finally gotten a small taste of what it's like to be the real him. (Attempting to fill in the blanks here, I've hypothesized that he's been forced all his life to hide the real him because of an authorital figure - parent or girlfriend, for example - telling him all the time to act differently than he naturally does. This opens the possibilities of loss of self-worth and self esteem.) "I feel it pounding...I feel it bending...I feel it breaking...Breaking me inside." = The want to get a grip on his true self is conflicting with the fact that he can't gain access to it, and is therefore breaking him apart inside, driving him mad. "I got...not yet" = He thinks he can get to it and reaches out to grab it...but realizes he can't and pulls his arm back again. "Smash my fucking fist (My frustration)" = He punches the invisible wall keeping him from his true self with all his might, taking out his frustration in not being able to grasp the one thing he desires. "My body, my mind, my soul, and my life: So far, so near, so hard, so clear" = All that he truly is, he cannot get a hold of no matter how hard he tries. His body, mind, soul, and life are: so far away (because he cannot get to them) but so near at the same time (right on the other side of the invisible wall), as well as so hard to get to (impossible, really), and clear (because he can see it right on the other side of the invisible wall). "My body, my mind, my soul, and my life: Too far to go, too high, too low" = The journey he must take to attain his true self...his body, his mind, his soul, and his life...is far too long andarduous, full of walls impossibly higher than he can scale and passages far too low to duck under. "Killing me inside...take a drink; forget" = He decides that the pain of not being able to get a grip on himself is causing too much emotional pain and it's not worth the effort; that it would be easier to just off himself. So he downs a poison, trying to forget about working to grasp his true self. "Chemical passion drowning my defect" = He feels as though his inability to grasp his true self makes him defective as a human being, and in killing himself he is doing the world a favor by getting rid of one seemingly unnecessary person. "I feel it pounding" = The poison takes effect, causing his heart to start pounding. "I feel it bending" = Reality itself bends and twists as the poison takes his life. "I feel it breaking all that is perfect" = He could've been perfectly alright had he some outside help (i.e. psychiatric help) and he could've been saved...but the poison is breaking any perfection he ever could've acheived by taking his life completely. "Frustrated, frustrated..." = His dying thoughts are full of nothing but frustration for not being able to attain the one thing he wanted most...to be himself again. |

I think the song is about the point in everyone's life when they get very old and realize they're close to death; they then think about how they lived their lives and question what they believe about the afterlife. The following is nothing but my own opinion on each line's meaning. Keep the word OPINION in mind. "I still feel the cold of long past days" = He realizes how much of his life is over, and how little time he has left. Realizing the grim, inevitable situation, he's overcome with a cold feeling. "i knew my worth; put in my place" = He realizes his powerlessness under Death and realizes he must accept it. "it's no surprise, I realized, some time before" = Now going back and thinking it over, he realizes that he should've seen it coming. He had thought about it before, but it never really hit him until now, as close as he is to death. "December sun shines through haze" = Now we know the time setting...it's December. The sun is Death coming for him; the sun is as inavoidable as Death. The haze is his cloudy, unsure thoughts about Death itself...what to expect from it. "i put my thoughts toward future days" = He switches his train of thought to the actual days he has left...how much time he may have, and how he will spend that time. "it's no surprise; I close my eyes, and close the door" = He closes his eyes for the last time, and as such, has closed the door of life; there's no turning back now. "Feeling so old, years pass like days." = As he closes his eyes, he realizes the situation he's in to the fullest and feels very old. As his life flashes before his eyes, the years pass as if they were only days. He realizes just how short life really is. "Fastly changing, so many ways; my eyes perceive" = Watching is life flash before his eyes, he sees himself changing physically and emotionally throughout the years. "Yes, I believe in nothing more" = He gives up any preconceptions of the afterlife that he's ever had and just takes Death as it comes, allowing whatever happens to happen...and he dies. |

Is no one on this site capable of serious/intelligent answers? I mean, shit guys...at least fucking TRY. Anyway, I think this song is about feeling obligated by society's pressures to be in a relationship, and none of them working because you don't really want to be in it...you're just in it to fit in or to better your image. The following is my own opinion on what each line means. OPINION is the key word there. "Get to the gone" = Being pressured to be in a relationship, even if it may not work out. Basically, start a meaningless relationship. "Under the gun" = The pressure is being metaphorically referred to as a gun, like having a gun against your head as the holder of the gun tells you what to do. "Drop in, drop out" = These "obligational" relationships end as soon as they start. The lovers "drop in and drop out" of the relationship too quickly for it to have any lasting value or meaning. "It's just the way you wanna be" = Deep inside you DO want to be in a relationship...just not necessarily a forced or obligatory one "Under the gun It's just the way to be" = Under the "gun" (the pressure), it seems like this is the way things are supposed to be...as if you're always supposed to feel like you need love or a relationship. "Drop in, drop out To begin with, it's killing me" = These meaningless, short-lived relationships are killing you inside, hurting you. "Killing the one thing I know this to be" = These meaningless relationships are making a mockery of love itself, the one thing most everybody can find comfort in when everything else may be going wrong. "I fly, I fly Around the world Through the night sky" = Flying all around the world, as if in a dream (think "A Christmas Carol" style) and seeing that it's the world over. "I feel the end The end is near" = Like asking oneself, 'What is left to live for in the world if love is rendered meaningless?' Seemingly nothing...therefore, it feels as though the end is near. "Relations Die One Mile Ten thousand miles Makes no difference" = No matter how far you fly, you see that it's the same all over the world. It doesn't matter if you look a block down the street or on the opposite side of the earth...everywhere, people feel as though they need a relationship to be happy. "Changes more changes" = People need to change the way they view relationships and love itself for there to be any hope. This isn't how things should be...changes need to be made. "Get to it Get to the gone You get it Get to become A relic" = As you go through more and more of these meaningless relationships, you begin to feel old and used (hence, "get to become a relic"). "A cynic" = After so much mocked love and empty feelings, you become cynical...possibly toward love itself. "An addict" = You find that you've even become addicted to trying to find relationships. "Automatic destruction" = The whole situation is automatically destroying the person you used to be. "Get to it Get to the gone You get it Get to become The static" = Love is no longer a crisp, clear image and something you can tell is there in a relationship or not...it's become a staticky blur, so much to the point that you cannot tell if it's real love or not that you're feeling in these relationships. "The metal" = Metal cuts deep wounds, as do meaningless relationships. "The hell" = Life's now a living hell because of all that's happened. "Get to get it Sensation" = After all the pain you've gone through in these horrible experiences with mocked love and relationships that meant nothing, all you care about anymore is finding physical satisfation in using people for sex, then dropping them and finding a new partner. All you want now is the sensation. It's all made you forget how to love and know only how to use. |

I think the song pertains to being abused (either mentally, physically, or both) and taking one's anger out. The following is how I interpret each line. It is simply my own opinion, nothing more. "I've been taking abuse and it's senseless" = Being abused and not understanding why. "Fist into the wall and it's painless" = Punching a wall to get his anger out, and he doesn't feel it because he's numb with rage. "I've been living the lie that I made me" = He's been telling himself it'll stop...it's ok...eventually it will end...but it doesn't and hasn't, and it's made him the anger-filled person he is now "Screaming into the mic and i like it Put it all over the air in thick slices" = Wayne is now venting his anger through singing and playing. "Soak it all up in your head with the anger" = Wayne simply telling the listener to absorb the anger within the music "Older, elder, I am. Deeper, bleaker, I am" = The abuse has made him more emotionally developed (i.e. older, elder), and emotionally deep (i.e. deeper, bleaker) "Brush the surface off and grind on it" = Dust yourself off and keep working at getting better...use it and learn from it, essentially. "Put a gun in my mouth, and threaten to shoot" = Lost his grip again and is threatening to kill himself, emotionally scarred from the abuse. "Justice died here" = Justice is amiss, as the abuser wasn't punished...only the abusee was punished by his/her own emotional scarring. "Buttnut, fist fuck, ass suck" = Wayne calling the abuser names. "Dump truck" = Metaphor for Wayne about to dump all his pent-up anger onto the abuser. |
