The Weakerthans – Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure Lyrics 18 years ago
this song made my cry the very first time i heard it, which i think is a difficult effect to have since the person's never heard it before. it does help if you know the backstory for virtute (meaning "plea from a cat..."), though.

anyway, it sounds like like song tells three different stories (in each of the three stanzas) about virtute having run away and then come back after hearing "the sound that you found for me".

"I heard you missing steps in the street and your anger pleading in an uncertain key singing the sound of you that you found for me"

that part leads me to believe that it's a call, the same way you or i would call for a lost pet if they ran away. but maybe i'm looking at it too basically. maybe it's not a sound at all, so much as the feeling behind it? i have no idea, really. just a guess. i want to say it's deeper than just a "virtute, come home" sort of thing.

anyway, this is my favorite off the new record. bravo jks! another amazing cd!!

The Faint – Sex Is Personal Lyrics 18 years ago
i don't pretend to understand every line in this song, but i always thought that the "sex is personal" idea meant "personal" as in you had an emotional connection with your partner no matter what, not "personal" as in you don't tell other people about it, hence the lines "Yeah, a part of me can deal with this open relations
But "concept" to "do" is like "yes" to a "goal"" and "Keep your head above the meaning
And devotion doesn't swell
Any sexual encounter adds an awful twisting touch". just a shot at it.

Alkaline Trio – Sleepyhead Lyrics 18 years ago
hmm... i don't know much about hard drugs, but i do know that people who take meth say that they felt like there were bugs crawling on/under their skin. that's why methheads have scars all over their face and sometimes the rest of their body... because they try to dig them out.

David Bowie – Quicksand Lyrics 18 years ago
on wikipedia, it says that this song is about a nazi mourning the death of hitler. since it's wikipedia, idk how true that is, but i think it's a pretty interesting take. it is, after all, a well-known fact that bowie was fascinated by hitler and himmler (who's mentioned in the song) and once referred to hitler as "the first rock star".

Cursive – Into the Fold Lyrics 19 years ago
The woman's part should say:

"I was in the student union studying for an English quiz; he came up and asked directions to the new auditorium. We walked up and down the campus, no one had ever heard of it. He was so embarassed when he realized he had the wrong college. He offered to buy us coffee for the time and effort wasted. We drank and talked for so long, we started making plans for dinner..."

Also, "she answered over four cups of coffee" should be "she agreed to have a cup of coffee".

And the last line is "once she heard I studied Dostoevsky, it was in the bag."

Just got the CD today!

Cursive – Rise Up! Rise Up! Lyrics 19 years ago
I wonder when I listen to this song: in whose point of view do you guys think Tim is singing? It seems that he speaks from several different peoples' view points throughout the album, but this one sounds like his own, from interviews I've read and such.

Also saw some Ugly Organ discussion going on, so I figured I'd throw in my two cents. This is an amazing album. The lyrics, at least to me, are much more interesting--lyrics I could absorb myself in deciphering for hours on end. That said, though, The Ugly Organ is still the superior album. It simply doesn't have one bad track! This one's got a couple of weaklings in the bunch, but I still adore. Another amazing job, Cursive.

Now if only the biggest disappointment of my summer hadn't been their skipping of my city on their upcoming tour!

Cursive – At Conception Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is pretty straight-forward, I think. Father Cole "consoles" Jeanie after her boyfriend leaves by having sex with her which is evident in these lyrics:

"Father Cole has done his best to console her girl.
Moreso than some neighbors deem necessary".

Father Cole has raped 12 girls whose boyfriends have left for war, as Tim writes in these lyrics, and his new sermon implies that abortion is alright if the girl has been raped, because obviously, he doesn't want 12 little kids running around under his name.

"Jeanie whispers she carrying but there's one awful catch;
Her boyfriends been off in the desert for half a year."

Father Cole gets Jeanie pregnant but won't believe it when she tells him. He demands that she have an abortion ("you can't conceive such mortal sins") and that she not tell anyone ("what happens in confession stays in the confessional").
