| Lali Puna – Together in Electric Dreams Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
One of the most beautiful songs ever. You can feel the pain of imminent separation, but the love that will not end there. Originally by Phil Oakley, but given so much resonance by the MIDI and voice of Lali Puna. The lyrics posted are great, I just think these are a little more accurate... Sometimes it's ... love comes as a suprise Sometimes it's hard to (recognize) if only (you knew) [knew and you are switched, but I think this is what is meant] Sometimes love comes chorus: we'll always be together, however far it seems we'll always be together, together in electric dreams sometimes it's hard to recognize love comes.. if only (you knew) sometimes... ... ... ... sometimes love comes we'll always be together, however far it seems we'll always be together, together in electrict dreams we'll always be together, however far it seems we'll always be together, together in electric dreams we'll always be together, however far it seems we'll always be together, together in electric dreams |

| Elton John – Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"You stand at the edge while people run you through" - this might be a stretch but since this song is set in NYC, and the book "The Catcher in the Rye" is as well- could these lines refer to Holden's dream of standing in the edge of a cliff catching children before they lose their innocence? the person in the song could be saying that this is what he thought he was going to do in NYC but instead they just ran through him- i'd imagine that would make him feel pretty hopeless, which the rest of the song conveys. Also, the song reviles the 'phonies'- mona lisas - with their fake smiles- and mad hatters- just plain crazies. Maybe it was meant this way, probably not though. |

| ps i would marry this woman in an instant even though im 19 and have no money. | |
| Suzanne Vega – Edith Wharton's Figurines Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this makes me glad to be alive. and how she says we at the end is amazing and 'routine operations' is a perfect phrase that conveys two meanings- for olivia of wharton's novel, and those of us who are 'under anaesthesia', who don't live each day to it's potential and- these are incredibly poignant and humane lyrics by the way- with 'our wit and wonder snuffed' and 'our own beauty not enough'. God thats beautiful. im so happy that music is still so vibrantly alive. | |

| The Shins – Saint Simon Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about approaching death, and the immense courage it takes to look at your imminent death without the comforts of religion. The first verse is about how great people (saints, philosophers, scientists) have searched for meaning in life, some arriving at the conclusion that humans are divine (destined for immortality). But it is just too hard to believe and the narrator sees that these conclusions are just people trying hard to believe that maybe there is something after death. The narrator will not believe these frantic attempts for immortality, and he will face his death without a comfort, knowing he will probably simply cease to exist after his final breath. "I'll try hard not to pretend Allow myself to mock defense As I step into the night." The night symbolizes death. The mock defense are the "implements and texts designed by intellects" that try to explicate the idea that men are immortal. The second verse is just about how useless it is to try to make sense of our lives, so he doesn't ('apathy'), and he "won't cry every time one's wiped out" . The last part... "Mercy's eyes are blue, and when she places them in front of you, nothing holds a roman candle to, the solemn warmth you feel inside" means that despite the fact he has said that he will 'step into the the night' without any 'mock defense', he still feels tempted to believe that there might be hope, there might be an afterlife. Therefore, in the end, we aren't sure what he chooses to believe. THE END |

| lboogy-- grinding skeptics into the soil is a good thing? hmmmm. | |
| Thom Yorke – The Clock Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| SoConstantine-- it's because it is the most important thing of our age. Of any age. Think about how the population keeps growing, arable land becoming scarcer, trees (oxygen providers) being cut down, ozone depletion- thus hotter, thus drying up water (already happening in Darfur) and melting glaciers, killing eco-system supporting plankton (which depend on ice to insulate them from sun), and people being oblivious to all of it. I think I would write about that as well. It's difficult to set aside and forget about. | |

| Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| these lyrics are amazing. | |
| Julian Lennon – Saltwater Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is beautiful- it's about how the human race is so smart in so many ways-- we can go to the moon, climb the highest mountain, and send photographs back from mars, yet there are still people starving, there's a hole in the ozone layer, and we are cutting down oxygen providing trees in the rainforest and other places, also killing innumerable other living things. He could add to that now with polluting the shit out of the world and using up it's resources, and dramatically attenuating the soil quality. So no hippie-chick it's not about him and his dad, sry. |

| Ben Folds – Late Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| If you're not a ben folds fan-- look up 'Still Fighting It'. | |
| Ben Folds – Late Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"Ben never got to tell Elliott personally. A lot of people feel the same way, that his music has got them through shit. I don't think Elliott would just dismiss this as something insincere. So many people feel the same way and would probably would want to tell Elliott personally how much his music meant to them." Exactly. Haven't you ever felt sad when you read an amazing book and knew that you'd never be able to talk to the dead author, or heard a beautiful song and then found out that the artist has passed away? I mean, you had never met the person, but it doesn't matter. It's what the person did. Sometimes, songs or ideas can inspire us more than people in the flesh can. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – The Sound of Settling Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I just read the posts for another DCFC song- A Lack of Color- and it seems that in Gibbard's work there is the theme of thinking of what you could have been or should have done. Gibbard is extremely retrospective and contemplative and he marks his emotions. This coupled with his love of reading/writing is why he is such a great songwriter. | |
| Mike Doughty – I Hear the Bells Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| this song is awesome in so many ways: the writing is gripping and dramatic and the melody perfect for Doughty's voice. Very Good. **** | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – The Sound of Settling Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Ummm... I agree with what some of the posts are saying, however, to me it seems that the line "I can't wait to go grey...and I'll sit and wonder, at every love that could have been, if I'd only thought of something charming to say," is being sarcastic. Gibbard is being satirical (ironic), in that he realizes that he will be old and grey and that he doesn't want to have to think back on all the times that he wouldn't say something to a love interest- whether or not it be charming. Gibbard is a complex, intrinsically profound writer and the fact that this song is so simple insinuates that he dramatically wanted to illustrate an emphasis on taking risks and perhaps he wrote this song after wondering why he always thought of the right thing to say to a girl after the chance presented itself, which is plausible considering his incredible writing skills. | |
