^^^great post. agree 100% on every point you made, was waiting for that. but lets take it further, would you say that maybe the predicament that society, humanity faces is the purpose for this system of narrow scope thinking? what i mean is maybe this machine of ignorance is in place cuz without it, humans would be obcessed with the fear of the unknown which is at the basis of philosophy. maybe a lot of people at some point in their lives realize that we know a lot but it also seems like we know nothing and they choose to be unenlightened and become consumed with politics, drama, celebrities, pop culture, etc. just to entertain their minds for the moment. and since life nowadays is all about living for the moment, they become bored quicker and need to jump to the next thing to complain about, the next trend, the next hot celebrity, the next big thing. so the cycle continues, history repeats itself over n over again. i dunno just want to spark some discussion. listening to this song reminds me of one of my favorite OutKast songs, "Da Art of Storytellin Pt 2" from "Aquemini". At the end of ize of the world, its almost like what you envision as the last days of the world, frantic and chaotic, the drums pounding, the guitars wailing as cities will be vaporized by an apparent nuclear war that is underway. In that OutKast song, Dre n Big Boi describe the end of the world, not neccessarily by war, but by something done to the planet caused by our irresponsibility. yall should check that out. |

i think a few people pretty much caught the message they were tryin to convey, but since the song is very experimental like someone said, there are many ways you can go with it. and i feel thats the way they wanted it. as long as food for thought is being brought to the table, then they have accomplished something. if you notice, they are getting very abstract lately, it seems as if they have finally grown up, they have successfully continued to achieve progress. what you hear is basically the natural evolution, nah forget evolution, its the natural adaptation to the world that everyone must deal with, especially artists who are born with talent but are afraid of using it to their full potential. i feel like the strokes as a collective see the world falling asleep while the exploitation of human nature and nature in general continues (see: ize of the world) and the artist therefore manifests this literal fear of sleep as to not be part of the horrible shit goin on. and if you get to this point in life where your mind begins racing back n forth, you will know how difficult it becomes to sleep. and to add to that, maybe the song is also about death and the fear of its inevitability. but after death is the unknown and its hard to deal with these thoughts in the mind of someone constantly seeking truths, facts, always questioning. so the character in the song becomes this solitary creature that hides from the rest of world and the person who chops the tree down, probably a member of the opposite sex, attempts to get to know this squirrel. but in a reality where opening up to someone and letting your guard down presents many risks (ie the quote: "get youself a lawyer and a gun"- we can handle the situation civilized or uncivilized) its almost like asking for the impossible. so then in the second verse the protagonist ackowledges the fact that people like himself become bitter assholes and they feel like they are the only ones who have "waken up", thereby not allowing themselves to contribute to the task of helping human beings progessively move into the future. so he says it helps not being an asshole cuz it lets you recognize those who might share the same view as you, rather than being full of yourself and getting mad that someone else can shine. |

i think the song is cool and it isnt as simple as just that its ironic that he has nothing to say. throughout the album u hear lines that pertain to the general idea that in these moden times, we are generations that have nothing to say, nothing to add, nothing to contribute to the betterment of sociey; of the human race. in these modern times dominated by technological advances that dont really advance us, there really arent any revolutionaries, nobody is tryin to stop whats going on. and whats going on is free-fall, its like the human race reached its peak a long time ago and has nowhere to go but down. i feel that this part: I'd like to watch, I'd love to read. I'd like a part, I'd like the lead. shows the indecisiveness of the average person. they wanna be better, they wanna do better but they just cant because they fear being looked at as an outcast. this part: I've got nothing to say (x 4) I got nothing to give Got no reason to live Oh, I'll kill to survive I've got nothing to hide Wish I wasn't so shy. shows how most people secretly feel like theres nothing to live for, yet would kill or fight if the opportunity were given to them. |
