it's so fucked up that people think just because someone's famous they have the right to say "end your life" if they don't like their music. im assuming you've never met the man you wish death upon? outkast is the shit, but i wouldn't even wish death upon james blunt |

how is their other music in any way "a realization of lies"???? You don't have to rap about theology in great detail in order to rap intelligently and with purpose. |

I agree with bleeWKPFF, you can try to develop some timeline of his life and say well, since elliott wasn´t using heroin at this point, this song isn´t about drugs...but although it definitely can encompass other issues as well, this song is clearly about drug use. ¨down down stairs, to the man he´s gonna make it all ok.´´ I mean he´s not at the grocery store guys. Either way, brilliant yet simple song, ahhh I wish I could have married Elliott Smith. |

yeah this song reminds me of 2:45 am too at the pick up...it's really a brilliant song...the lines "im so sick of tired to change your mind when it's so easy to disconnect mine" really hit close to home for me. |

haha "oversensitive weenies."
This song reminds me of my own eventual resignation to change the parts of my life that bother me and to just give in to apathy. That's a lonely place to be, and I can relate to the feeling of just waiting to be alone when you're with a group of people. |

This is the ultimate heroin song. I am not quick to make all his songs about drugs, but you don't even have to read the lyrics - if you've done it when this song begins it's just like immediate memories. It's beautiful though |

Scarp I don't think necessarily, it just sounds trippy and distorted and less specific to me, but who knows what he was intending?
Does anyone understand what he says or if that is even him talking? |

I think Elliott is talking about himself a lot when he says "you," usually when it's some feeling he has of worthlessness. When he sounds reall angry I think you is directed at his stepdad. "for one or two minutes she liked you..." who else would be you except for himself? |

I don't think he really thought all this out before writing it, sometimes the words just come to you, therefore it can mean whatever you want it to, be it the industry or drugs or love or all of the above and more |

| Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics

Pantsbesaw, I read your comment and got very confused then when I read the last paragraph it all came together...yes I am a fan and yes I am high as a kite so there you go. So yes that tickled me.
Anyway, I think this song is literally talking about a fond farewell to a human, like a good bye party and excusing getting really fucked up because it was the last time you were gonna see anyone for awhile. Obviously it means a lot more than that - death and drugs are themes throughout this song - but I think that's what though "this is not my life" as in I don't do this all the time, I swear....ironically self-depracating. Peace Elliott! |
