| A lot of this song reminds me, even though there is about a 20 time span, of the Paula Jones/Bill Clinton scandal. Last night in Little Rock..., the hotel detective was out of sight (meaning nowhere to be found?)... perhaps this was simply a way of life in Arkansas | |

| I like that Bo Diddly riff throughout the song | |

| I think they wanted to make a modern version of "Sympathy for the Devil." I notice that Keith Richards does not perform on it on the "Bridges to Babylon" cd. He does on the live follow up cd "No Security." | |

Great song, similar sentiment to Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". Sometimes I think Dylan wrote Sympathy as a ghost writer and sold it to the Stones. No matter...Interesting historical references. It's a song which I find myself studying rather than listening. Thank you all for your input. Very interesting insights. I don't think the Stones repeated a song like this for about this for almost thirty years when they released "Saint of Me." |

You all have given me new insights to this song.... I always thought that this was a Dylan song which he turned over to Robbie Robertson to complete...or perhaps Dylan's influence on Roberson is stronger than we imagined....I always thought that "Sympathy for the Devil" was a Dylan gift to the Rolling Stones. Very similar to "All Along the Watchtower". I'll save those thoughts for another time. Back to "the Weight" aside from the deep meanings everyone entered, this seems simpler....A guy goes on a trip, but instead of enjoying it, he is doing favors for everyone else during this vacation time. So he can not enjoy his time away from home. The only one who was not imposing was Fanny who just wanted others to get her regard, a very nice gesture with little effort on the traveller. Whenever I travel to faraway places, people ask me to get this and that, visit so and so, etc. The reason people go away is to get away. Sorry this was not as thought provoking as the other comment...I'm a simple guy. |

Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I remember buying the Sun City album in 1986 or 1987. It was around the time when a lot of artists were recording for different causes (ie. Do They Know It's Christmas?, Feed The World, etc.) The featured song was a bunch of artists performing a song entitled "I Ain't Gonna Play Sun City" (or something like that). There were other songs on the album and among them was "Silver and Gold". And although Bono had sung the lyrics, the music was performed by Keith Richards and Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones. Just thought it was an interesting note. |
