The White Stripes – Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground Lyrics 20 years ago
OK, so I know my analysis probably will never see the light of day buried under four pages of, "I luv the White Stripes" or "I love this line, I don't know what it means", but I'm going to give a crack at what it means to me.

Ultimately, this song is about a person who has been away from his lover for an extended period of time. Without her, the world seems a very dark and bleak place ("Dead leaves and the dirty ground when I know you're not around.") He reflects on what he ikes about her--not her appearance or her charm, but little things like the sound of her voice and the texture of her hair. He is on his way home, and wants her to know ("Thirty notes in the mailbox") and wants to stay as long as possible. He plans on coming in great fanfare ("if you can hear a piano fall you can hear me coming down the hall") He wants to make her feel as good as she has made him feel--he regards even her very respiration as some sort of special present just to him. He has missed her incredibly, especially at night.

The last lines have to do with the private, mysterious nature of love. Most people wear their love like a badge, which can distort its true nature. (Any man/fool with a microphone can tell you what he loves the most) However, love is a spiritual thing, the origin of which stems from the Divine herself. (sorry to throw my own religious politics into the mix, but I couldn't help it)
