The beginning of the song suggests whomever they are singing about is someone who is trapped by incorrect thinking caused by what people have done to them in the past. Technically, we all are, but lets pretend it was really shitty stuff... The rest looks like the battle we go through dealing with what we think is the truth, what really is and what an arduous, hellishly emotional process that is. Tempest represents the state of agitation the mind can reach yet at the same time trapped in a physical stasis. Or it is about a blow job :-) |

Actually, a previous poster made a good point. Not unlike Eddie V.; Maynard prefers that people ultimately draw their own meaning from the song. The irony is, if we do that, it doesn't give us mush to talk about :-) The tangental of course is that no song is ever made without the artist(s) bias, I mean otherwise it never would have been written? So there is - of course - something that all the members of Tool take away from this song, but in the end they would rather we all drew our own meaning. I still stick to my original thesis, evolution, as being Tool's original modus operandi. |

This is what all Tool songs have been about but a lot of us missed it. We thought the previous albumn was just angst, and to a degree it was. We thought the albumns before that were just introspective - again - to a degree they were. What we are looking at here is the culmination of a lifetime of work. Darwinsim. Not to convey a religion perse but just an idea, this - as all Tool material - is about (and I hate to sound corporate) reaching outside the human mind model. Lets keep thinking and keep evolving. It is just that simple :) |
