Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics 17 years ago
i've been thinking about the line "i hope you have more luck with this than me." does the narrator hope the owner of the bed has more luck successfully giving up/moving past his hopes & dreams than the narrator has had doing the same thing? or is there a past between the two of them, as in "i hope you have more luck with this than (you had with) me"? the fact that the mattress is "like new" suggests that it's probably the former, because the bed-owner apparently hasn't had company in a while. but it would add an interesting layer if there's been some sort of relationship between the person telling the story and the person getting rid of the bed. it doesn't seem entirely impossible, considering how much the narrator seems to care about the other person (based on the last few lines).

The Weakerthans – Civil Twilight Lyrics 18 years ago
just clicked the link in my profile to read my "last comment," noticed distorted_lens' reply, and chuckled - you're right, i should have added something more significant, but i didn't know what civil twilight was and figured maybe someone else was in the same boat as me. didn't really have any novel ideas to add :)

The Weakerthans – Civil Twilight Lyrics 18 years ago
From http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/RST_defs.php :

"Civil twilight is defined to begin in the morning, and to end in the evening when the center of the Sun is geometrically 6 degrees below the horizon. This is the limit at which twilight illumination is sufficient, under good weather conditions, for terrestrial objects to be clearly distinguished; at the beginning of morning civil twilight, or end of evening civil twilight, the horizon is clearly defined and the brightest stars are visible under good atmospheric conditions in the absence of moonlight or other illumination. In the morning before the beginning of civil twilight and in the evening after the end of civil twilight, artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities. Complete darkness, however, ends sometime prior to the beginning of morning civil twilight and begins sometime after the end of evening civil twilight."

the guitar lines sound a whole lot like "walking to do" by ted leo and the pharmacists

Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics 18 years ago
i was just listening to this and happened to notice the "painted horse" part... conor sort of drags out "horse" so it sounds like he's about to say "painted whore" instead, which i assume would be a reference to smoke without fire ("these fears of yours, like painted whores, they will not stay the night"). just a thought, may be overanalyzing but conor does like throwing in connections to other songs of his.

Bright Eyes – I Believe in Symmetry Lyrics 19 years ago
i really appreciate the constant theme of always "moving on" that's present throughout this song, especially the verse about notes "walking" up and down the clef, always waiting for the next one to come - i think that part is especially clever, relating the nature of music to our own human qualities. he's obviously observing the fact that life goes on, no matter what, and we are trapped in this cycle, but i don't think that he's fully come to terms with that realization yet and is debating here with himself exactly what consequences this reality has (and should) have for the way he lives his life.

Bright Eyes – Take It Easy (Love Nothing) Lyrics 20 years ago
very few people have commented on the last verse, which i think is really interesting. "if you stay too long inside my memory / i will trap you in a song tied to a melody / and i'll keep you there so you can't bother me." most obviously you can read this as a comment on the individual situation with the girl he's talking about in the song - he couldn't deal with the overwhelming emotions he felt about the situation, so he put them into a song as a way to "get her out of his system." but also i think it shows a side of his character that's still searching for that meaningful connection, despite his assertion that he won't care about anyone -- it almost makes the whole part about "taking it easy" seem really insincere and half-assed, like he's trying to convince himself that he really doesn't care. obviously people are still going to get close to him and he won't be entirely removed and indifferent, he's going to want something more, but he'll push those feeling aside (trap them in a song) because he's too scared to get hurt again.
