I think this song refers to the MEDIA corrupting society. Its everyone's dream, and that very dream destroys them. It twists everyone's views and makes everyone superficial. Have you ever heard the term "Russification"? Californication is a play off of that word. Its turning everyone into "Hollywood".

I do NOT think this is about drugs at all. I think that it is a bit about paranoia, but not completely. He is afraid of something, but I think that the paranoia is of himself (I'm being followed/I look around/Its only my shadow creeping on the ground). I think something happened and the memories are driving him crazy. I think the "demons in his head" refer to personal demons, therefore memories. He's been hurt, and he's afraid of himself.

I know that this is really about Dexter's girlfriend dying in a car crash, but I heard this song before I knew that. So not thinking about the real story, I think this is about a loved one committing suicide, and he's mournful but still kind of bitter. This is one of my favorite songs.. i get chills listening to it

I think this is about someone who he loves betrays him and hurts him, but he doesn't realize it and when he does, he just can't seem to care. but she's what he needs to survive. He is starting to come to terms with what she did, and he's mad.

I think this song means: there is someone that he loves that is just.. lost. maybe depressed? He would do anything in his power to help them, and is so concerned with them that it ends up hurting himself so he starts to feel the same way, but feels it would be selfish to give up (I will breath fire/and never stop to think about myself/i'll just keep holding on/to everything for everybody else). He is insignifigant to the person that he helps, and he expresses his frustration (I am like a pill to help you heal/I was only trying to make you feel something). Then when he finally gives up, everything comes crashing down for the one he loves, but it is too late.

I think that this is about someone who is depressed, but still tries to stay up and fight back and survive. His life is spinning out of control and he can't help it and its too much, but he still tries to keep up, as if by catching up to himself, he could fix everything and he wouldn't be depressed anymore. But then it gets to be too much, and he gives up and realizes that he can never win. Its a really sad song and it describes how I feel a lot
