Radiohead – Knives Out Lyrics 7 years ago
There seems to be a thread regarding the return of Jesus, and the sacrificial. The narrator also appears to be the subject, with us as the listener. Let me explain for a moment.

In this song there is Jesus who was murdered by execution (the dog). This Jesus as the runt could see the truth and speak to it. Then there is the Jesus of revelation, which is a distinct risen Christ figure. When we look into the Christs mouth a sword comes out, and that sword is the words of truth. And it says "He is not coming back." And at this moment we devour the Christ and he becomes complete. Jesus was the dog baptized in his death, and we continue to feed off of his death, because we can't stand the idea of letting his death be meaningless. And why? Because we don't want our own cruelty to be meaningless and we don't want our own deaths to be meaningless. So knives out.

Radiohead – Like Spinning Plates Lyrics 7 years ago
@[DanielKim:27573] I don't really think it has to be separated from the political, since so much of life is intertwined. It made me think of the Myth of Er and the Spindle of Necessity (spinning plates) from Plato's Politic (aka The Republic). The Myth of Er, which deals with the afterlife and rebirth, also has a highly political dimension, dealing with war, virtue and tyranny.

Nina Hagen – Born in XIXAX Lyrics 13 years ago
Good old fashion East/West cold war paranoia, turned on it's head. It's a breath of fresh air locked perfectly in it's own time.

The Black Heart Procession – A Light So Dim Lyrics 14 years ago
The imagery reminds me heavily of The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, especially the sketches by Gustav Dore. Linked to the story of the Ancient Mariner, I also find the idea of the Ship of Fools (insane asylums were often on boats early on)...

Still neither of those images really get at the core of the song. It's a last ditch effort at escape from a dark inescapable world. It seemed to be either a society or social norms, or a family although it's hard to say. But looking to someone who has seen the light, or is a bright personality, that can help lead one away from the depression and anxiety that comes form being trapped. For those who have been seriously depressed (situational or chemically based) sometimes there's a person who seems to be that lighthouse. That person that makes worth trying to get out worth it. Even if that person isn't what we first see them as, the hope they offer at that moment is enough to save us.

In the end sometimes when all options seem extinguished we must just hang onto the rope and blindly climb until we can see our way out. Over all this is a very dark but moving piece.

LCD Soundsystem – 45:33 Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay a little closer I think. I've tried to allow each voice to have it's own line:

welcome
step through the doors
sliding doors
okay I’m serious
I’m just playing
It changed
mystery solved
You can see everything from here. Isn't it beautiful?
It is beautiful.
I bet you know what you need to know by now, just take a moment
I must admit your technology is wonderful. I've never seen anything like this.
Will you accept our friendship?
Without hesitation.
I didn’t say we could promise anything more than that. Unless you’re seeing everything for the first time. ??? alright
That is everything.
Same thing always with ??? ??? step through the door. Step through the door now.
I have already stepped through the door ??? except
Then welcome.
I don't know ???
I see no need for this.
who's that?
I want to talk to you.
who is that? Who's talking?
I want to talk to you about a few things.
Is that a voice in my head?
Help me (now I know) understand your friends are all afraid.
Get out of my head, help?
Help me help me understand, why your friends are all afraid. You don’t have to fear us.
??? Yes thank you very much. ??? something to happen
okay so

The Cure – A Strange Day Lyrics 15 years ago
I too always thought this song was about LSD... although the sound is very unique for some reason it kind of reminds me of some of The Doors lyrics (Strange Days etc.) As well I would recommend Siouxsie and the Banshee's Follow the Sun which seems to have a similar theme.

Nine Inch Nails – Capital G Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow I think your power of perception and interpretation are very far off. Irony and subtly are lost to you. This is the voice of a character, and our collective participation in something that is so obviously ignorant and dangerous. So yes I suspect you are one of the people that pushed the button to elect the Capital G.

Nine Inch Nails – Letting You Lyrics 16 years ago
This isn't simply an argument about government verses the people. This is about a specific moment in American history. Contemporary political models that were developed post nine eleven are being left in place after they have been exposed as lies. This is about Capital G's lasting influence and the people that made this possible escaping our critical understanding and challenge. But not just escaping the justice that everyone deserves but that we are allowing the model itself to continue to dominate our way thinking and perceiving the world. I find this to be much more about our future than our past.

Nine Inch Nails – March of the Pigs Lyrics 16 years ago
There are two images that come to me when listening to this song. This first is Jesus casting the legion of demons out of a possessed man into a heard of pigs. The pigs then drown themselves in the river.

I also often think of the scenes from Lord of the Files novel and the 1963 film adaptation where Simon speaks with the pigs head. Again Simon is killed by his mates in a frenzy of violence.

When I've seen NIN live I've often thought of him as casting demons into the audience which then goes into a frenzy. It seems like we're the pigs in the live show. Somehow all these themes seem to combine together in my mind.

Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics 17 years ago
I know this is way off but I liked the idea of it being about Lenin... I remember about how they had won the revolution but to survive they had to suck lemons to fight off scurvy... It just makes me think of that and the two colors are red and yellow... yay for great songs like this. I like everyone else's research and ideas.

Bauhaus – King Volcano Lyrics 17 years ago
I like the interpretation above… In David Bowie’s song Velvet Goldmine he refers to himself as King Volcano in a sexual situation with someone. Myself, I couldn’t find a specific meaning for this piece…

I think all the lonely people are the King Volcano in this case. Each one is a candle but through the void they have something in common and that makes them as a whole the King Volcano.

I often think of a short story about moths who burn brightly when they hit a candle. In the short story the moth was a symbol for our lives. Perhaps this is about transcendence through loneliness.

The most curious line for me is “King Volcano gave me numbers”. In connection with the Velvet Goldmine there is something about choosing abstraction as a method of communication. As well I’ve often heard math and numbers in general are a perfect language in that they are totally abstract. Is it abstract to feel connection to other lonely people who you are essentially totally otherwise unaware of?

A beautiful song and puzzle for me. Any other ideas?

Bauhaus – The Spy in the Cab Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of their greatest songs. It seems to be somewhat 1984 with a twist of Kafka's The Trial. The most striking thing about this song is how well the music personifies the creepy feeling of being watched by what is essentially automata. As general theme Bauhaus appears to explore the madness of civilization. It seems to be connected to songs like "The Silent Hedges". I feel like I've been this person being watched by a mindless entity that still has authority over me. As well I've always felt a subtle reference to God... But a terrible mindless God. Still one of the top 10.

I think buck is right... this is about a soldier who's now injured with a leg blown off thinking about his love. It seems like a good portion of this album is about Iraq, the US and it's western partner, UK.

Bauhaus – The Man with the X-Ray Eyes Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not certain about this one but this song made me think of the poem Ozymandius by PB Shelly. To me it's somewhat about the power of nuclear weapons and modern hubris much like Ozymandius.

It's almost as if our narrator has seen into the past with xray eyes and like PB Shelly sitting at the foot of Ozymandius our narrator perceives the futility of great empires and himself (his own demise).

I think at the end this is a frightening, unsettling, moment and he wish he had never seen what poor PB Shelly had seen.

Anyway I love the song and poetry of it.

I could be very wrong about this... Here's the original PB Shelly poem I'm referencing:

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) Lyrics 20 years ago
On it's own I get the impression that the two characters don't want to become their parents. Time passes and they grow up. They become colder and thick skinned like their parents. I think there is a very dark undertone though. The parents in the begining are suffering. I think there is a heavy amount of loss and a desire for the connection of love. Remembering the parents and what happened to them reveals the darkness that drove them to the snow in the first place. They have become like their parents. Even though the two are at least emotionaly seperated possibly no longer lovers as adults he has carried that moment through his life and has been trying to sing it. It is the ending that is the hymn. Yes it makes me cry. It reminds me of someone I once knew who's song I've been trying to sing.
