Scotland and Ireland were considered one and the same for a long time, especially during the Roman Empire and several hundred years after. For example the two philosophers John Duns Scotus and John Scotus Eriugena. Scotus means Scotland and Eriugena means of Ireland. So technically Ireland was a region of Scotland. Trust me, I'm a classics major. And yes they both share many things in common such as bagpipes, whiskey or whisky, and kilts. But Scotland the Brave is a Scottish song, so they are co-opting that. |

The Four Beasts are not the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Four Beasts are the creatures who praise God in heaven and open the seals to release the Four Horsemen. It is even shown that they are not the same in the verses quoted in the song. The Beasts are saying come and look and are showing him the Four Horsemen. But I would have to agree about this being one of the best Cash songs out there. |

I'm kind of disappointed by the explanations of existenialism here. I'm a philosophy major and have had to study this stuff. Existentialism was a movement started by Soren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. twnty2 is right about "existence precedes essence." Existentialism has nothing to do with atheism or selfishness. In fact, Kierkegaard was a strong christian and is one of the founders of it. It is also one of the most humanitarian views out there. It is the view that our existence and what we do is important. It was a reaction against some of the more scientific attempts at philosophy, existentialists are trying to get back to the supreme idea of human personal experience. According to the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "we first simply exist - find ourselves born into a world not of our own choosing - and it is then up to each of us to define our own identity or essential characteristics in the course of what we do in living out our lives. Thus, our essence (our set of defining traits) is chosen, not given." |
