Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 18 years ago
What annoys me slightly is all the people saying "I really love that part where he says "Oh my God"" Don't get me wrong, I love that part as much as the next guy, but the beauty of the phrase is what comes before. The chills you get down your spine really aren't from what he sings in falsetto, but its the:

Twenty-seven people
Even more, they were boys
With their cars, summer jobs

That phrase with its small crescendo is what drives the oh my god into your mind like a knife, because up until this point he has been fairly neutral toned and emotionless but with the added emotion felt through the crescendo it really packs a punch. not to mention what he is saying. We can all identify with summer jobs and cars and that subconsciously reminds us that it could have been any of us underneath the front porch.

A.C. Newman – Come Crash Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Christine died in the car accident, and at first he thought that they both survived and were really luck to do so but then he realizes shes dead. this realization comes at "That's truth," she said. "We should be dead.
I should be sleeping in your bed.
Instead, I'll crash on your floor."

The "I'll crash on your floor" is him giving up, giving in to death to be with his love.

The Decemberists – Eli, the Barrow Boy Lyrics 20 years ago
i think basically what everyone else thinks. great song. very moving. i think it is quite possible that eli commit suicide to be with his lover, because they address the fact that she is dead before they say that he is. "Dressed all in corduroy" to me implys that he killed himself in his best clothes. his lover was poor and did not die in her nice clothes, because she had no idea that she was going to die. her death was probably an accident.
