Iwrestledabearonce – Tastes Like Kevin Bacon Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok. I know a lot of people who read this are going to be upset by what I say. And I know some will agree.

In all honesty this song means nothing. As all of their songs do. Sure, to them, there's probably a meaning. And in a sense, that's what music is all about. But for a song to actually be "good" (and I use that term strictly because I can't think of a better one at 5 AM), for the listener as well as the artist/performer, the listener must also be able to relate to it. These lyrics are random. No rhyme or reason.

Much like the band's style, which is all well and good. You can still do much better than this. Come on.

I will say this, the band itself is actually pretty good, but the vocalist, who I have to assume writes most of the lyrics (I haven't been able to find if she does or not for sure, but just assume she does) is more of a hindrance to the band than an asset. Sure she can scream. She's completely unintelligible, which is really up to listener preference, when it comes to metal or other music for that matter. But the biggest problem comes when she starts singing. She's still unintelligible. And you can tell she goes out of her way to not enunciate the words.

And I think its partly because she/they like it as a gimmick, that their lyrics are unintelligible. Wow, that makes you cool. Its like the artist who just throws paint on the canvas to be unique. All you're doing is just begging for attention. She's an attention whore.

And they're riding the wave of attention they're getting. Eating it up like any other attention whore would. And as all fads do, they will fade.

And I know, I know. Some of you'll say you relate to the lyrics. Sure, fine. Go for it. I won't insult you. Like what you like. But look at these lyrics and tell me there's any actual lyrical art to this. And no, I'm not saying there has to be alliteration, rhyming, or even pattern to lyrics. There should be meaning, though. Understandable meaning. And as I said, I'm sure it does to them. Which is all well and good. But for it to be considered a "good" song, that meaning should be communicable.

Nine Inch Nails – Down in It Lyrics 18 years ago
I have not read through all 3 pages of comments on this song so this may have all been said before but here goes.

Basically, to me, this is told from the viewpoint of a person who sees themselves as higher or better than others because of something. Lets say using drugs.

"kinda like a cloud i was up way up in the sky and i was feeling some feelings
you wouldn't believe sometimes i don't believe them myself and i decided i was
never coming down."

This is basically before everything happens. He was up above everyone else; he felt good about himself. He told himself "That'll never be me."

"just then a tiny little dot caught my eye it was just about
too small to see. but i watched it way too long and that dot was pulling me
down."

But now, for whatever reason. Whether its curiosity, boredom, or whatever, the temptation to use drugs has caught his eye. He finds himself thinking about it more and more.

"well shut up so what what does it matter now. i was swimming in the haze now i
crawl on the ground. and everything i never liked about you is kind of seeping
into me."

He gets defensive here, telling the listener to shut up and so on. He also states that everything he used to hate about drug users, he now see in himself.

"try to laugh about it now but isn't it funny how everything works
out ("I guess the jokes on me." she said)"

He recognizes the irony of it all.

"i used to be so big and strong.
i used to know my right from wrong.
i used to never be afraid.
i used to be somebody
i used to have something inside
now just this hole that's open wide.
i used to want it all
i used to be somebody"

Here he is lamenting what he used to be. Before this he was good, understood right and wrong, was ambitious, used to be so much more than he is now.

"i'll cross my heart and hope to die but the needle's already in my eye. and
all the world's weight is on my back and i don't even know why. and what i
used to think was me is just a fading memory
i looked him right in the eye and said "goodbye.""

He'd give anything to be back there again, but he understands its to late. He doesn't know why everything went the way he did, but he accepts that this is where he is now. He knows he will never be his old self again, and says goodbye, ready to move on.

And of course this doesn't have to be about drugs, could be alcoholism. Hell, it could be a number of things. Could be a mental disorder, a physical handicap. Could be atheism, where he used to hold himself above the them and now has a lack of faith and sees himself as a lesser person for it.

Thats the beauty of NIN, he gives you the basic outline, and lets you fill in the subject.

Mushroomhead – The New Cult King Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this is another song in which he questions his faith. In this song though he attacks religion more. Particularly Christianity. The line "it just seems to me it's such a joke every new walk thru life just inherits Christ you should have to prove something first" obviously points directly at Christianity and ridicules it for the fact that it is inherently passed on to the new generations without the children usually being unable to choose or even look at other religions without having this biased opinion of Christianity forced upon them. It shouldnt just be accepted by these generations that Christianity is the truth...Christianity should have to prove something to the individual before being accepted.

He calls Christianity and anyone who forces it on an individual a godfiend.

He states that the only proof you need is that you know. I believe this to mean that when questioning faith and whether or not you believe in something it is nearly impossible to prove something so the only proof comes from the individual knowing something. Only if you truely know something can you not question it. We automatically assume Christianity as the divine right and its almost brainwashed upon the younger generations. Theyre losing out on the chance to figure things out for themselves.

The new cult king...atleast i believe is calling the person a leader of a mindless mass that has been brainwashed into believing in something. Stereotypically not necesarily truthfully but sterotypically a cult is just that. A mindless mass following some false idol. And by Christianity basically brainwashing this belief into the minds of children it is becoming a stereotypical cult.

Dog obviously refers to god, and is a reference to Mushroomhead's song 43 where he speaks of god and a dog and so on. He is stating that with all this brainwashing of Christianity with the way they approach spreading their beliefs is it any wonder why he questions any faith in Christianity.

Then Jmann starts almost pleading i guess for his savior whoever it may be to show him the actual answers. To save him from this grey world where he cant see the true beauty of it because he is stuck where everything is dull. Its almost as if hes drowning and being challenged to keep his head above the water ...waiting to find the answers. Then the truth hits him...there are no answers and there never will be.

just my opinion...

Mushroomhead – One More Day Lyrics 20 years ago
I actually think the song is about a relationship. Losing the love you had for eachother but still staying because time heals everything. You try to be ignorant of the fact that the love has died and they regret trying to force the relationship. Day to day they regret it.

Mushroomhead – Sun Doesn't Rise Lyrics 20 years ago
To me this song is about him searching for his faith. He doesnt feel like it is right that he cant find it. He feels like maybe hes done something wrong to seal his fate. He has no faith and its as if the sun never rises for him, and as if his life hasnt even begun yet. He cant see that light so hes stuck in darkness but he still strives to acquire that distant light. But whenever he looks at religion or any organized faith its just empty. There is no answers there. So he continues to struggle falling deeper into his darkness questioning himself and his life and even his soul.

To me anyways...
