| Addition to that... I think maybe the second verse suggests he feels that was because a girl left him, or maybe just someone hurt him. As a result, he feels like he's not living for anything anymore, and all he's doing is waiting for the next day, all the time. | |

Yeah, I got it from iTunes as well, and i had to switch the names of "Alexithymia" and "Reclusion". Also, they spelled "Adelaide" wrong. Conversate is NOT a word. People say it colloquially, but the right word is actually "converse". Just felt the need to clear that up. =P I dig these lyrics, man. I like the dismantled's interpretation. I think its about going through a time in your life when you just feel like all you're doing with your life is staying alive, day after day, and never getting anywhere. |

To a certain someone... write your own songs, dammit. :) On a more relevant note, this is a top song. Darren Hayes has a way with words, and i dig his love songs. Shame he had to turn gay, I had a lot more respect for him. Still... this song is a great artwork. |

Nah mate, probably just more a case of that's how he sang it for the sound on the recording. Can any of you guys please learn how to spell METAPHOR!!!? Haha... Anyway, I reckon the thought about the metaphor in the verse is a valid thought. Rob often writes songs which are metaphorical, so, it wouldn't surprise me. |

I'd just like to share with everyone how shitted off I am. There's 2 and a half pages of comments here, all people crapping on about "they sound like U2" and "blink was better" and "this song is so cool" and I counted about THREE comments that were anything to do with the meaning of the song. Note the title of this website: songMEANINGS. I personally don't know what the song is about, but I did hear the thing about the friend of Tom's who was in a crippled marriage. When I read the lyrics, I think that could be it. Tom has a way of writing lyrics that are hard to interperet sometimes (except the oldschool blink, of course...). What do you make of the lyrics in the second verse? |

| Relient K – Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, And Things Like Chemistry Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I think the cell phone thing is not actually a matephor, as some people are suggesting. Apparently, Matt actually did lose his phone on the Batman ride. My guess is, maybe that got him thinking and inspired him to write this song. The verses talk about the things that make you fit in when you're an adolescent (having a cell-phone, bringing in your permission slip, making a day of it...) From then on, it's just the way wizewhiz put it... those are the things that distract us from God, when we're more interested in popularity and fitting in. The song talks about how relationships (with girls and just friends) can also sometimes come between us and God. |

You know, before I read Chris Dixon's comment, i was pretty sure this song was about a girl. Which is unlike me, because I tend to look for Christian influences in songs, cos I'm a Christian. I probably missed it because I knew that Rob isn't religious. Anyway, I think it could very well be a song of submission to God. For those of you closed-minded people who refuse to believe that a song could be about Jesus, I think it could also be interpreted to be about a girl. Like, maybe this girl doesn't like him the same way. It's great how art music can be interpreted different ways. |

| That would be a harp, if we're thinking of the same instrument... unless you mean the xylophone, which plays the intro. | |
| Anberlin – Foreign Language Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| More importantly than crapping on about "Anberlin is so cool and I love them forever" and "I relate this song to myself" ...Does anyone have any idea what this song actually means? | |

| Does anybody know what the title of the song means? | |
| Rob Thomas – Something To Be Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Now that you mention it, I think that could be pretty right. Especially because of the lines "my pain is a platinum stack" and "Everybody says you've been away too long", which would refer to the gap between Matchbox Twenty's last album and Rob's first solo album. | |

Gabigs is absolutely right. The vocal track on the album is the first take they did one the song. They recorded it a few times, but none of the tracks had as much feeling in them as the first one, so they stuck with that one. I read in an article by Darren Hayes that one line in this song is supposed to sum up the whole album. "There is hope in the darkness, you know you're going to make it." |

| Matchbox Twenty – Crutch Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think he could be talking about a relationship where the physical element has taken over from the emotional element of their love. He feels like the emotional love is almost gone from the relationship, and all of a sudden it's all about sex. And now he just feels like she's using him as a crutch, someone who she can get her dose of loving from. On top of that, I really think Gabigs is definitely on the right track. I agree with your thoughts. |

| R.E.M. – How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
This is a bit of a blind stab, but tell me what you think... Do you think this song could be talking about a relationship where he's not getting what he wants out of it? Like, he's in a relationship, and he feels like there's something missing, and trying to find it is like getting "Blood from a stone" or "Water from wine". He's not specific about what he's missing though. Maybe he's feeling like she doesn't love him as much as he loves her, or if she is, she's not showing it. That's just a possibility. I think the canary trapped in the uranium mine could be saying that he's getting a feeling that the relationship is going to mess him up, and maybe he shouldn't stay in it. The chorus, I'm not entirely sure what he means by it. He might be saying that he's getting used to the situation, so it's a "sad story, told many times". And the "trying times" is the rough patch he's going through, trying to find this thing that's missing in the relationship. I don't know what to make of the last line in the chorus, though... "How the west was won and where it got us." That's just my thoughts so far on this song... let me know if you think i'm completely off, or if you think i could be onto something. Hope i've helped someone. |
