Tomahawk – Mayday Lyrics 15 years ago
"Kiss-Kiss" Baby,
Can't tug on the hangin' man.
They'll shock you clean,
A jalapeno in the guillotine.

Pearl Jam – 4/20/02 Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think iTunes entitled the song.

'4/20/02' came about as a nickname the fans used to identify the song when 'Lost Dogs' came out. I imagine that the band just adopted the title after a while.

As people have pointed out, the song refers directly to the loss of Layne Staley and the wealth of unconvincing knock-offs who imitate his singing (and indeed life) style.

I doubt, as many have suggested, that song has a double meaning about isolation or the death of various other late 1980's/ 1990's music figureheads.

Something that interests me, is that the eponymous date - 4/20/02 contains the number '4/20'.

4/20 is a number synonymous with drug use communities. It is the date of 'Cannabis Day' in many places.

Incidentally, I believe the song plays after 'Bee Girl' - when the display on the CD player reads '4:20' (Four minutes and twenty seconds), but this is probably a deliberate reference to the song's name; suggesting that it was Pearl Jam who chose the title in the first place.

Faith No More – Malpractice Lyrics 17 years ago
I was just reading about GG Allin (This really shit old rapist punk frontman who used to drink his own urine on stage and all that crap). The article mentions his first band, They were called 'Malpractice' so I thought - 'Hey - like the Angel Dust track'. As I read on - I found out his next band was called 'Stripsearch'. Coincidence?

I decided to check out the lyrics, which easily fit the description of GG Allin (Performing sexual acts on stage). The song names might just be coincidence - but it fits extremely well. Especially when you consider how crazy Mike used to get onstage, is GG Allin a secret influence?

Could be that Patton just heard the words from GG Allin and liked the ring of them, that's all? Even if Stripsearch is nothing to do with any of this, could still make sence.

Punchbear's comment kind of fits in with mine too.

Paul McCartney – Dance Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
No, but art generally has to be good to be good

Do you follow?

The medium of a song, is more often than not - is just sound (Yes, You get visuals with videos and live shows as well as emotional responses, but you know what I mean)

This, no matter how simple or complex, sounds like cats screwing.

You know it, Macca knows it and his bank manager CERTAINLY knows it.

Really, REALLY cynical

Paul McCartney – Dance Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
Well fuck my arse! - I've never heard anything as overly stupid as this simplistic hunk of dirge!

The lines essentially go:

Everybody's gonna 'something-something'

I HATE YOU FOR INFLICTING THIS ON MY INNOCENT EARS!

I saw this on an ipod advert and was physically sick afterwards (No exaggeration) - He deffinatley has enough money now to pay the next ethiopian prodigal song writing camel to come up with better 'lyrical ditties' than this, so why come out with this shit excuse all by himself - FUCK OFF

Soundgarden – Kyle Petty, Son of Richard Lyrics 19 years ago
Richard Petty was one of the world reknowned NASCAR driving greats, and his son Kyle would always be known merely as the son of a great man - no matter what he achieved on the the race track.

The song is about having a name/title to live up to before you're even born

The Smashing Pumpkins – Zero Lyrics 19 years ago
I think 'She' is a metaphor for cocaine, The whole song refers to drug related situations. For example:

"My reflection, Dirty mirror"

Chalkheads use mirrors to snort coke off of.

"Intoxicated with the madness, I'm in love with my sadness"

He enjoys being sad because it's an excuse to 'Intoxicate' himself with 'Madness'

"Fashion victims chew their charcoal teeth"

People who fake coke addiction to look cool have to reap the negative side-effects too (One of which being tooth decay)

You could name any line in this song, and it fits perfectly with my explanation

PS: My favourite liner in this song is the one which perfectly describes In Utero era Nirvana

'Victims in demand for public show'

Pearl Jam – Immortality Lyrics 19 years ago
Firstly - If you are under the impression than shooting yourself 'cements you as a great musician' then you are horribly miss-informed. Kurt Cobain achieved 'immortality' through writing good songs and shocking the world with his death. His talent made him a good musician though - not his suicide

Secondly - In reply to Aerosolspray, I think that a truant finding home is the perfect metaphor for Kurt. He got lost in a world of fame and found freedom in death. Just like a truant finding freedom in the safe haven that is 'home'

Pearl Jam – Lukin Lyrics 20 years ago
My friend showed me the song and gave me a brief explanation about what it means.

In the early PJ days, Eddie was accused of rape by a crazed fan. The case was thrown out of court because the fan was clearly mad - but the media tore Eddie to pieces over it.

Like Tomauto said; Eddie used to use Matt Lukin's home as a refuge from fame - but the song shows that how even when he was around at his friend's house, Even Lukin was talking about the whole rape scenario. 'Lukin' is all about how no-body let Eddie live it down and it ends with the morbid comment:

"The last I heard that freak was purchasing a fucking gun"

Implying the crazed fan's impending suicide

Pearl Jam – Blood Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree, I like the way that it seems like the music industry has taken his blood and used it to forge cheesy pop knock-offs.

The song always reminds me of cloning and transfusions because of the name

Pearl Jam – Stupid Mop Lyrics 20 years ago
The song is a 're-mix' of a tape that one of the band found in an archive somewhere. The numerous high pitched voices you can hear aren't children, In fact - they all belong an old lady.

The old lady was a mental patient from the eighties living out her days in a correctional assylum in the states for commiting many bizzare and perverse acts.

The tape records a psychologist (The middle aged female voice) interviewing the 'mop handle mama' whilst the whole thing is narrated by a journalist (The male voice).

Despite most of Vitalogy being songs that mourned Cobain's suicide, I doubt this song has anything to do with Kurt or Courtney

Pearl Jam – Not for You Lyrics 20 years ago
Vitalogy is a very angry album, It's full of songs about Kurt Cobain's death (I.e. 'Last Exit' & 'Immortality') and Vedder's relationships like the one he shares with the public (I.e. 'Corduroy' & 'Whipping')

I think the focus of the song is about being your own person and not following trends, but I think everyone is looking to deeply at this. Pearl Jam songs are often very abstract - And I think this is one of those songs. The line:

'Where did they come from - Stormed my room'

could be a metaphor for anything from a drugs raid to the way in which the fans invade his private life

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 20 years ago
You're all wrong guys - The song is way more heart breaking than you think

The song is about when Vedder's partner having an abortion with his baby.

Black is written as an ode to his 'would - be' daughter and the fun times they could have shared if she had been born, hence the lines:

'Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay'

The above lines are a metaphor for the absence of Eddie Vedder's child.

(Another gut wrenching song is 'Hungerstrike' from 'Temple of The Dog' where Vedder helps out Soundgarden's Chris Cornell with the vocals)
