The Goo Goo Dolls – Black Balloon Lyrics 19 years ago
I never saw any of the drug references. I did see a lot of religious references, though, especially because of the line, "'Cause you were the same as me/But on your knees." I figured that the narrator felt some kind of connection with the girl, so they were the same--except the girl was really religious.

I think the girl was naturally very isolated and unreachable, but somehow the narrator was able to reach her; maybe she fell in love with him. When he sees the world spin beneath her, I think he sees her falling into depression, possibly caused by her isolation or some inner depression. I have no idea about the "ice from the spoon" thing. Apparently it's a drug reference--whatever. And the womb? I don't know.

"Comin' down the world turned over
And angels fall without you there"

She is coming down as she slides into depression and despair. I think the "angels fall without you there" refers to how she was so innocent and so extremely religious that he feels she was keeping the angels up--when she goes down, they fall, too.

"And I go on as you get colder
Or are you someone's prayer?"

The narrator keeps living the same while the girl falls deeper into depression and away from her hopeful wonder at life and God. I'm not exactly sure about the prayer reference--maybe he was hoping that someone was praying for her, so that she wouldn't keep getting colder?

"You know the lies they always told you
And the love you never knew
What's the things they never showed you
That swallowed the light from the sun
Inside your room"

I always felt this referred to her parents. Maybe she was raised in a religious home and led a sheltered life. I am not saying that religion is lies; in fact, far from it--but the narrator may feel that her parents were keeping her from knowing life to its full extent, raising her as though she were staying in her room.

"And there's no time left for losin'
When you stand they fall heyy.."

Not sure if the "they fall" refers to the angels again...because it seems like they wouldn't fall when she stood, they would fall when she fell...

"And I'll go on to lead you home
All because I'm
All because I'm
And I'll become
What you became to me "

Maybe at one time she, by her innocent hopefulness, became an image of hope to him, and now he wants to bring her back and be hope for her. I don't know about the "All because I'm"s. Maybe because he's in love with her. I dunno.

Thousand Foot Krutch – I Climb Lyrics 19 years ago
I really like this song, though I feel that it doesn't rise to the height I wanted it to it the chorus. After the build-up I expected more, but I really like the build-up.

I've been trying to figure out what it is about for a while, and I don't really know. TFK being a Christian band, it is probably a Christian message--I'm thinking maybe about being open about your faith and not being afraid about talking about it with other people...? That would kind of work with talking about the girl letting the conversation move away when she has an opportunity to share her faith, thus letting her problems drift away, and with some other parts of the song... But I don't know how the chorus would fit into that

East West – For Every Wish Lyrics 19 years ago
When I first heard this song, I thought it said "For every wish there's hope that dies." That is of course very depressing, but I kind of like it better.

I don't understand it. Is there a Christian message behind it (TFK being a Christian band)? Because it's really hard to find if there is.

Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics 20 years ago
When I heard this song, I thought that the guy, the "Volcano," was someone who was really depressed and in a lot of emotional pain. (I suppose he is like a volcano in that his depression kind of comes out of him and harms the things close to him.) The girl sees this and wants to end his pain with her love, but she can't.

"Don't hold yourself like that; you'll hurt your knees." I think this is referring to how the girl is bending under the weight of his pain, trying to bear it all herself. The guy tells her not to do this. All he needed from her was someone to kiss; she wasn't ever going to be the solution to his depression. He tells her not to build her world around someone like him, because if she she does, if she connects herself so intimately with his unhappiness, it's just going to wear her down. Or melt her down, I suppose.

The chorus I think describes how they are needing different things out of the relationship. While the girl seeks to be the fulfilling love that saves him from his pain, he does not see her this way. She can't help him as she wants, no matter how much she loves him, and he can't be healed by her.

"Don't throw yourself like that in front of me." I think this refers to how the girl sees the one she loves hurting himself and I think she is telling him that he needs to stop, or stop showing her how he is hurting himself, because when he hurts himself he also hurts her. The girl has tried to help him by kissing him, and wants to know if that's all he needs; she is beginning to realize that she is not fulfilling to him as she wanted to be. "Don't drag my love around; volcanoes melt me down"--she is trying to love him to make him happy, but as he exposes her constantly to his pain that she cannot stop, she is brought down by it, unhappy because he cannot be happy.

Chorus again.

At the end, the guy tells the girl, "What I give to you is just what I'm going through; this is nothing new, just another phase of finding what I really need." He is saying that when he tells her how he is unhappy--hates himself, wants to die, whatever it is--he is just telling her what he's going through, not giving all his pain to her and expecting her to take it away. He is always unhappy, something is missing in his life, and his relationship with her is just one way of trying to cure his depression, but it's not enough. She is not what he needs; he needs something that he hasn't found yet.

I don't understand what the part about the "new disease" means and her being "too young to treat." The "young" reference makes me think that he is referring to her innocence and naivete, but I don't know what the connection is between her and a disease.

Anyway, that's the way I connected with it when I heard it. And seriously, vocanoes do melt you down.

Thousand Foot Krutch – New Design Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the song is about stepping out and deciding to live your life to please Christ instead of other people. The phrase "new design" is reminiscent of "new creation" in 1 Corinthians 5:17 - "Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come." It talks about how living a life for Christ, and stepping out and standing for him, can be lonely.

See what you're doing to me
Could've been you so easily
You look the other way,
Even though we were close the other day,
And I'm still trying to get up this hill
I need you just like a pill
I've never felt this way before

I think this part may be referring to the feelings after sharing Christ with a non-Christian friend, who distances himself/herself from the singer afterward, even though the singer understands the other person and easily could have been them. The singer still feels some kind of dependence on their friend's approval even though they're taking a new direction and trying to live life as they truly are. Or it may possibly refer to a relationship with a Christian friend, who is not taking the step out in the same way the singer is, and looks away when the singer does "embarrassing" things like share his faith with others.
