Fucked Up – Son the Father Lyrics 14 years ago
"This song is about how we've wasted our lives in history, on bullshit.". That's from lead singer Damian Abraham's mouth while on tour.

José González – Killing for Love Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a love song.
It analyzes love.
Illusions are brought to the light.
"Will you let it burn for hate or compassion."
Your heart, your passions.

Will you let that human passion for sex, companionship, togetherness, security, be expressed negatively, with harmfully selfish consequences, or will you try to compromise and make it as gracefully expressed as possible?

José González – How Low Lyrics 17 years ago
sometimes i think he says "you'll be up to your knees in the shifting seas" don't know though.

Anyways, this song points us in the general direction of the entire album. Illusion, selfishness, and the pointless of human life. "It's in our nature" reflects the general inability of humanity to escape these hindrances because of the way we are constructed biologically, and the problem of having to deal with others of the same sort.

I do believe, as I've said in other posts relating to songs from this album, that Jose is trying to lay it all on the table so we can see the situation and perhaps cause us to realize how we manage to do more harm than is necessary sometimes while living with such realizations.

Even though the pointlessness and impossibility of conclusions and complete peace is present in our lives, we can still carry on with a little more grace if we reassess and come back in touch with the consequences of various behaviors and actions.

José González – Cycling Trivialities Lyrics 17 years ago
I think you're all right in some way. The sentiments are very mixed because it isn't a conclusion he finds, but more the realization that there are some contradictory behaviors and thoughts involved in every day living for most human beings.

Judging by the tone of the entire album, I would conclude the song is more pessimistic in its direction, pointing more towards the impossibility of this problem ever being resolved.

I love this song as I've felt the same thing that many of you have. Life is so utterly pointless and most attempts at figuring it all out leave us realizing the illusions of our senses and our entire consciousness. We end up in a state of nothingness consciously, unable to conclude, think, feel, move.

I do, however, think Jose is attempting, with the entire album, to point out the illusions and the problem of never resolving the major theme and issue. He seems to suggest that although conclusions is a futile thing to strive for in this life, killing ourselves with selfishness or drug use or any such behavior will only kill our time and take from us all that is pointed in the direction of something higher than humanity's plight and position.

After listening to this album on repeat for weeks at a time when i am 21 years old and prone to drug and alcohol abuse and egotistical exploitation of others as a result of my realizing life's major unsolvable issues, I find that I'm finally seeing what he is attempting to explain.

We must give give in to this, reflect, and carry on, perhaps not toward anything of resolve, but certainly much more capable of maintaining grace.

José González – Fold Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song seems to discuss the attempt to become involved in the world scene once again after having given up trying to actively become involved with organizations and such. Many times people lose touch with such organizations/leaders/political parties because they see the contradictory behaviors and the ruining of good things at each attempt.

This seems to be about trying once again to look it all through and trust again, while hoping those you form the relationship with again won't let you down this time, even if they're a new fresh face talking about good things to come and positive change.

Radiohead – Reckoner Lyrics 18 years ago
are you kidding me man? the new version kills.
the only song i'm disappointed with on the new album is the recording of videotape, but really the album is way beyond what I imagined it would be. It's upbeat and not quite as dark as it seems. Lovely record and their best in my opinion.

Animal Collective – Who Could Win a Rabbit Lyrics 18 years ago
They say it's just nonsense words but to me it's about quitting smoking.

It mentions eating lots of food throughout, and we all know when you quit your appetite increases dramatically. It also talks about the habits and new perspective, and its all difficult to express to other smoker friends and what-not.

the rabbit could be interpreted as the exercise you sometimes carry out. you can start running faster and faster and moving very quickly for a while as your energy levels increase.

at the end i believe the correct words are "teeth are getting fewer" because when you smoke your teeth get fucked.

haha that's just my interpretation but it seems to fit so well for me. Don't know if you all agree.

this song borrows a lot from the song The Theif by Can, particularly in the opening riff, but they manage to make it their own.

i'm wondering if this song should actually be referred to as Come Slowly

Can – Bring Me Coffee Or Tea Lyrics 19 years ago
it's about a person high as fuck waiting to talk nonsense with another druggie, and in the process he feels he's floating up a chimney. lol i don't fucking know. that's my best guess.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 19 years ago
i think it's about wondering if you'll ever get the one you love, if they'll love you back, if you should even be as concerned as you are emotionally because existence itself is a big enough issue; having doubts, feeling like shit being alone in the world, feeling guilty for losing your grace because of love..things like that..

it's all about the feelings a person can have in dealing with the various human needs in life, all against the backdrop of existential angst.

Radiohead – Kid A Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about the difference between being a powerful figure or politician and an ordinary citizen.

"We've got heads on sticks"- ordinary citizens would have to take action and do nasty things such as this to be heard and take back a country. (not amicable in my book, but sometimes necessary if things get ridiculous)

"You've got ventriloquists" - ventriloquists being the talking heads (some politicians or presidents) who speak either for others in power or just speak in favor, (perhaps unknowingly) for the current mismatch of money in the capitalist society.

standing in the shadows at the end of my bed would just reperesent the despair of this situation and disparity in power.

and then the whole "come on kids" bit, i believe reperesents leading the way to escape, but surely impossible.

i wasn't a big fan of this song (actually hated it) but it has certainly grown on me and i'm of the opinion that it's album quality now. it may be a nice song for the ending of an album.

anyways, i think it's about having a completely objective mindset and losing all meaning,
but certainly in the end giving in to the subjective just a bit and learning to accept it and enjoy life again. (there's a way out of the hopelessness and anguish, at least momentarily)

this interpretation would cover all aspects of life, including love and relationships, but also mental health in general.

Radiohead – Open Pick Lyrics 19 years ago
i'd like it better if the lyrics were "got a knife, you can feel it on your back" that seems to be what i hear, but of course considering Thom wrote that on deadairspace, i'm likely wrong.

anyways, either about pickin' up women in bars who you're barely attracted to emotionally, and hating yourself for not finding someone to fit that niche, but knowing it may not be your fault.

Thom seems to always play on mental health, and societal issues very well, and this song is great at both.

i was listenin' to this cool radio station by us called 1077thelake, and they said this was about Pam's house which was located on a street that all the hippies called Love Street because of the drugs and all that, so it's just about that like you guys have said.

Bob Dylan – Man on the Street Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about people either ignoring the death around them as they go on with their lives, or the fact that we are not all that important in the scheme of things, because a man can sometimes die and no one notices.

Bob Dylan – Let Me Die in My Footsteps Lyrics 19 years ago
sean, i'm pretty sure Thom Yorke is only referring to laying in bunkers because that is what people do during war, and he's not necessarily suggesting someone do that. It's a song written about people killed in bunkers by US war missiles during the first Gulf War, and his anger.

Anyways, yea you guys have the meaning of this song down pat.

Radiohead – 4 Minute Warning Lyrics 19 years ago
yea it is about the bombings. i'm pretty sure he said it somewhere. something like 4 minutes is the warning time given when the bombings were occurring. but anyways, the helplessness and the fear could be interpreted with much of what occurs in our daily lives in this modern world and society in general of course, and i like that one a little better, but either/or, it is a great song.

actually this song was also written while thinking about syd barrett i'm pretty sure.

anyways, this version wasn't bad at all. i enjoy it, really freshened it up for my modern ears.

i'd say this is just about understanding the pointlessness of life, losin' yourself and your mind, wondering how or why it has happened to you, and then not being able to relate to others.

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 19 years ago
man, this song is amazing. when phil's drum beat kicks in .. god damn.

basically i'd say this song is about amazement at the possible beauty life can offer, but also realizing that damaging behavior is often hard to escape, all the while becoming content and giving in to what is to come.

Thom Yorke – Black Swan Lyrics 19 years ago
yea it is "lay down in the bitumen" Appers.

also i think that one set of lines is actually:
"You cannot kickstart a dead horse
You just cross yourself and walk away
I don't care what the future holds
Cause I'm right here in your arms today
With your fingers you can touch me"

I think the song is pretty straight forward, that you can't please everyone which would make life feel right, so he takes a "live in the moment" philosophy while in the arms of someone he loves.

the dead horse is probably just our predicament as human beings, and the processes we have to live by. it can't really be changes, we are what we are.

Thom Yorke – The Eraser Lyrics 19 years ago
i'll give an interpretation a shot.

I think it's a conflict in his head in which he can see that as a human being he is bound by the biological needs, which may cause him to lie and say he "needs" someone, but realizing the absurdity of being trapped by this process is bringin' him down and making it difficult to follow through with the process.

many of us find this predicament ridiculous and then try to push others out of our lives, but the more we attempt to "erase" them, the more we see that this is what we are and it is not necessarilly possible to escape.

the lyrics seem right, but i'm not sure about

"all the rooms were numbered"

I may be hearing "all the rooms renumbered"

but it could go either way, and is not entirely important.

i think it's actually..
"you wrapped around the earth, you circled it with air,
you're trapped inside the core, with hot, hot lave there"

i feel like this song is about nature or the idea of god, one of the two.

Midlake – kingfish pies Lyrics 19 years ago
lol yes, hilarious for sure.

Is this song about losing the simple pleasures of life as a result of our continuous strive for bigger machinery and greater technology?

submissions
Midlake – balloon maker Lyrics 19 years ago
hm.. hard to say.

Maybe about those who appreciate simplicity, and wonder what it is that drives the majority of people to make life so complicated. All most of us want is "slow paced" heartwarming experiences, like those found in the balloon ride. But the natural tendency to strive for power and competition is making it impossible for people to remain like the balloon maker.

Not quite sure, but this band has also taken a strong hold on me, and I even find them more pleasing than the great musicians of the 60's era, which I thought I'd never find myself saying about any band.

The new album seems to have a lot of existentialist themes, and is becoming extremely relevant for modern times in my opinion..

Modest Mouse – Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice on Ice, Alright Lyrics 20 years ago
Yea. Seems pretty simple.
Taking his more atheistic point of view, Brock uses this little dream about heaven and the afterlife, just for sake of creativity, song writing, and exploring various points of view.

Though I do believe the song concerns Meth a great deal. In the beginning lyrics:
"Well all's not well
but i'm told that it'll all be quite nice
you'll be drowned in boots like Mafia
but your feet will still float like Christ's
and i'll be damned
they were right.."

Could this be an interpretation of the effects of meth on his life? He's drowned in regard to functioning normally and completing productive tasks, though he's kept afloat by the good feelings the drug causes which, without, may leave him only bogged down by depression?

I could interpret more of it, but it's pretty self explanatory and I'd only be repeating more of what you've all already said.

damn good song though, that's for sure.
