Pixies – I'm Amazed Lyrics 6 years ago
I've always taken the lyrics to be about the power other people hold over us and how it can affect us. The first about romantic love and the loss we feel when it's broken/asymmetrical, the second being about how something nonchalant but withholding a parent does can have a deep impact on their children - the image of a child playing happily with a ball of string that a parent thoughtless takes away. "I'm amazed" being the feeling of total shock at the pain others can inflict, intentionally or otherwise.

The last verse I'm a little less clear on. My best guess is that it's about the reaction to flee hurtful situations - in a lot of his lyrics the American Southwest is treated as foreign and almost mystical (understandable in contract to New England), packing up and driving to Arizona could represent the impulse to leave hurtful situations behind.

Black Eyes – someone has his fingers broken Lyrics 13 years ago
I always assumed this song was about Matthew Shepard, the homosexual man who was murdered in Wyoming in the 90's. It's drawing parallels between the persecution of early Christians, which many modern Christians still have a chip on their shoulder about, and how now that they're the dominant group some use religion to justify the same cruel behavior.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Lyrics 20 years ago
I remember reading that they wrote this song about 2 of the band members' older brother. His parents were abusive to him, and he committed suicide.
Hence, "Our mother shoulda just named you Laika", they brought a person into the world but didn't take care of him, with no intention of equipping him for survival.
