This is an awesome song.. one of my new favorites off of Good Monsters.
This is what Dan has to say about it:
"With Oh My God, we wanted to kind of communicate that everybody at some point intersects with God, whether they choose to believe or not, and people all have their reasons for crying out to God. And some of those are really deep, deep doubts. There are times when I wrestle with that now, but growing up I didn’t know the gospel could stand up to the scrutiny. It’s a question that I think needs to be asked. This song has three parts. It starts out being many people’ stories and the third part is my personal story...Why I cry out to God." - Dan Haseltine (Jars Of Clay) |

"This song was written by Mark Byrd and Julie Miller. More of a modern day hymn, all the aspects of this song were written about such a chronic pain in their life. We were really scared to cover this because we wanted to really honor what this song was. Julie’s husband, Buddy Miller came in the studio and we sat him down and we played it to him and he loved it, which calmed our fears a bit." - Dan Haseltine (Jars Of Clay) |

"It’s the context of relationships that’s deeper, that’s much more vulnerable and honest. And being OK, that process has allowed us to accept who we are. It’s allowed us to accept that there are those dark places. I’m not so surprised anymore, and it takes a big weight off. We’re not secluded anymore. I’m not having to show people this rot of the controlled idea of me, I can show somebody the real me, and they have to contend with that. We call that “bringing the weight.” We bring our own weight into conversations, into our opinions, into our songwriting, we’re being freed up to say this stuff and not have carry the weight of how someone else has to deal with that." - Dan Haseltine (Jars Of Clay) |

'We wrote this song out on the road, which we don’t really do a lot. It was sort of our first experience writing as a full band, with our drummer and our bass player in the mix. I wrote the lyrics about a week after hanging out with these guys and getting their stories. One of the things that we all just fight against is isolation. Sort of the root, our tendency is to sort of be alone. But being alone causes us to believe things about ourselves that aren’t true, and it’s the downward spiral.' - Dan Haseltine (Jars Of Clay) |
