| Nomeansno – Oh No Burno! Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Best punk song to ever include playing Cribbage. I thought I was the only person under 60 who likes it. XD Actually I think the point is that "Bruno" is such an excessive gambler that he'll bet on pretty much anything. (The part I'm referring to is "10... 20 for 2... 30 for 6." In cribbage face cards are all worth "10" and the point of the game is to get points for matched sets of numbers, so 20 = 2 face cards = 2 pts, 30 = 3 face cards = 6 pts.) | |
| Nina Simone – Sinnerman Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I love this version musically, but I in terms of lyrics I really miss the verses. They're so powerful and moving; I think the song suffers without them. | |
| Donna Lewis – Mother Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| A really beautiful song. Even though I sadly don't have a close relationship with my mom, it makes me cry anyhow at the tenderness and affection. | |
| Ben Folds Five – Magic Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I cry every time I hear this because when I was 20, my dad passed away and I listened to this song (and album) a lot at the time. To me the lyrics were immediately obvious as a song about a person you loved who has died. I listen to it every year on his birthday. You'd think I would dislike a song that always makes me cry, but it's the good kind of sad where you remember loving the person, not the negative sadness of loss. The song is so sweet and heartfelt and melancholy without being actually being depressing or even that sad, and I really like that about it. | |
| Sea Wolf – Black Dirt Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I also think it's about being murdered (or I guess it could be a metaphor for her doing something really emotionally/socially awful to him). My feeling is that he did something really crappy to the girl -- as another poster said, he broke a promise that probably had to do with love and commitment (for example, by cheating) -- and this is her revenge. I think he's saying something like, "I did something really bad... but not THIS bad," and that because she decided to get revenge, now she'll always carry with her that guilt and darkness. I think he's sorry though; the lyrics aren't angry, they're just sort of reflective, and he keeps mentioning what he did. The "black dirt" was caused by her own action and is her own burden to carry, but since that action was in response to something he did, he feels a bit responsible. I think he wishes she hadn't done it, not just because he's bleeding out (literally or metaphorically), but because he feels kind of bad for her, that she'll have to carry that guilt around now. | |
| Jónsi – Grow Till Tall Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I've seen other people interpreting the end not as "you'll know" but rather "Not You" over and over. Listening I definitely think it sounds more like that. Of course with his accent, listening is of dubious value when it comes to figuring it out, but yeah. Someone said that interpretation could mean something like "in the end they'll all fall... not you." Suddenly a song which seemed kind of melancholy seems much more uplifting? I don't know. | |
| Jónsi – Animal Arithmetic Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| After a lot of listens to the album I have to say this won out as my fav track. It's just so... alive! XD It's got so much energy and is so lovely at the same time. If only anyone could agree on the lyrics. Kurse him for not just telling us. Icelandic bastard. | |
| Jónsi – Go Do Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This is such a wonderful song. I'm a kinda melancholy person (my fav band is Radiohead, ffs) but I can't help but love this music dearly. It just makes joy bubble up inside me, and that's something I don't feel as often as I'd like. It's so beautiful and uplifting. The whole album just makes me want to cry (in the good way). It's got to be the most lovely thing out this year. | |
| The Big Pink – Crystal Visions Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| sounds a bit like an acid trip in a jewelry store. >_> | |
| The Big Pink – Dominos Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Agreed with the people who think the song's a bit egotistical. To me, the song's essentially about the kind of guy who can't or won't commit, maybe had a girl he DID love and it ended badly, so now he takes it out on other women. He just goes around breaking hearts one after another, thinking of it as a kind of game, something to do for fun. Like Dominoes. The kind of guy who's all about the chase -- maybe he even really thinks he likes the latest girl! Until he catches her. As soon as they say those "three words," he's sick of her. "As soon as I love her, it's been too long." Then he's off to conquer another girl. I think the song's about this feeling and this act, which he does trying to make himself feel good, even though it doesn't work. Reading the previous comment about the interview reinforces my view. I have to say I'm glad the singer doesn't think it's a nice song either. |

| Sea Wolf – O Maria! Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I liked that reference too, but I think he left out the end on purpose, when I think about it more. I mean, we all know how the story is likely to end, but he doesn't actually tell us. Obviously it's a metaphor for his relationship with Maria; they are two totally opposite people, but in another way they are very similar, and he believes that they can bond over the little they have in common and complement one another with everything else. Everyone warns him about her, that she'll break his heart and so forth, their love will disappear, etc... but he believes he knows her (that she's "of his kind") and SURELY this will totally go well!! How could it not? I think he left out the end of the story (in both cases) on purpose because he doesn't want to say "this type of situation can only go one way." Instead, he leaves us hanging, knowing it probably all went to hell, but keeping alive the hope for that tiny chance it worked out. | |
| Radiohead – A Punchup at a Wedding (No No No No No No No No) Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I love this comment, I thought it was a riot. Ironically (given your parting comment), this is a fairly simple song. (Except for people who can't grasp metaphors, I guess.) |

| I love the comment above mine. XDDDDDDDDD (And I agree with it more or less.) | |
| Tricky – Black Coffee Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Such a fantastic song. And these lyrics are wrong. This is a... er... cover (kind of) of an Ella Fitzgerald song, so the lyrics should be more like: One, one, two, one, one, two, Move over, move over Yeah, you heard what I said, move over. I feel so lonely Haven't slept a wink I walk the floor and watch the door And in between I drink Black coffee Love's a hand me down brew I'll never know a Sunday In this weekday room I'm talking to the shadows from 1 o'clock til 4 And lord, how slow the moments go All I do is pour Black coffee Since the blues caught my eye I'm hanging out on Monday My Sunday dreams to dry They say a man is born to go a lovin' And a woman is born to weep and fret To stay at home And drown her past regrets In coffee and cigarettes And moody all the morning Moody all night And in between I drink Black coffee Black coffee |

This song is SO GANGSTA YO. Seriously I believe it's their take on Justin Timberlake/R&B/hip-hop. In an ironic fashion. The lyrics are hilarious, come on. DRIVING IN MY BLINGED-OUT PEUGEOT, BLAZING OUT YO LA TENGO omg we so hardcore!!!!!11 |

| Rehab – Rattle My Cage Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I don't think it's to a girl; it's more to, you know, everybody. All those people telling him what he should do to improve his life, improve his health, etc. I think it's pretty clear since he says things like "don't like people who seem nice, talking in my head like a family of lice" and "I want this whole town to leave me alone." He wants to be left in peace to ruin his life or make bad decisions or whatever he likes without people nagging him about it all the time. | |
| Hellogoodbye – Touchdown Turnaround (Don't Give Up On Me) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| this is probably my fav hellogoodbye song. it's just so... sweet. it's like pixi stix on disc or something. so cute that it kinda makes your teeth hurt. BUT I STILL LOVE IT. They closed with it the only time I saw them live. I was really happy because the rest of the set was only so-so (IMHO) and I was feeling a little sad that they hadn't played this. | |
| Ace of Base – Happy Nation Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
are you people brain-damaged? The first verse, for one thing, is probably some general spiritual stuff; Latin often omits direct objects, so it just says "praise, all people praise", but it doesn't say WHO you are praising because you're supposed to know. Which is kind of nice because you can insert God in there or whoever you like, whatever reflects your religion or spirituality. secondly, to the tard who thinks the song has promotes hitler (what?!): 1. "over time we've learned from the past that no man's fit to rule the world alone" Gee, these lyrics CLEARLY promote a dictator. Oh wait, no they don't. 2. it's "dream of perfect man", not "the perfect man" but in any case this means mankind, and by perfect, they mean people who can live in harmony and who idealize improving themselves (as you could tell by the rest of the song if you would, you know, listen to it). Good lord, how could anyone think of friggin' Hitler or accuse this band of Satanism (yes!! people have done this!)? They're just a new agey europop band! All I can think is that some people are overzealous religious nuts who never learned to interpret what they're reading, because they think knowing how to read only means being able to see letters and know what the word is, and they stopped paying attention in English class after that. :P |

| The Smiths – I Know It's Over Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
To me it's a song about going out and acting like an ass -- like you're so great -- sarcastic and so cool, someone who laughs at others or always has something nasty to say. An abrasive personality to keep other people away so they can't hurt you, because inside you have no confidence and you're sure they wouldn't like the real you anyhow. So when there's someone you like, you have all these dreams about how great your relationship could be, but you're too afraid of rejection to ever get round to saying anything. You don't know what to do anyway, because love doesn't come naturally to you like it seems to come to everyone else; instead you hope desperately that your beloved will just magically see through your wall of bullshit and notice you are not REALLY that so-cool person and on the inside you are sensitive and nice and you love him/her so honestly. And your heart is crushed when that doesn't happen, and worse, that person went off with someone who you just KNOW isn't as good as you would have been. But when you go home alone wondering why it happened, the doubt inside you that stopped you saying anything in the first place says, "if you're so great, outside or inside, why are you alone? Isn't it because in reality you suck? Wouldn't someone love you if you were lovable?" So you just pine for someone who will understand you despite the front you put up and love you unconditionally (like your mom)... But you know that's ridiculous, and you have suffocating nightmares about dying alone. Man I'm such a ray of sunshine. Thanks, Morrissey!! |

| We Are Scientists – This Scene Is Dead Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| To me the song is about going out to a bar because you're lonely and want to drink away your sorrows and pick up someone. And you meet someone pretty cool, but it's clear this person's not gonna sleep with you, and it's getting pretty late and prospects are getting very slim... so you excuse yourself and look for someone else, because you really don't want to go home alone. | |
| The Faint – Take Me to the Hospital Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think people may be thinking about this one too much; despite the line in the middle "anything worth doing's worth getting hurt for" I don't really feel it's supposed to be at all deep. It reminds me of when I cut my finger last year and blood was everywhere and I ended up getting 7 stitches (I was REALLY ANNOYED that I had to go to the hospital), or when my ex hurt himself skating; I think the song is literally just about some seemingly minor, easy-to-get injury that still requires being taken to the hospital, and how if you live your life in a way you won't regret (so, not like a paranoid wuss who's afraid to leave the house), you'll probably injure yourself a few times. | |
| The Pursuit Of Happiness – I'm An Adult Now Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think it's pretty obvious that the song's about how much being an adult sucks, compared to being young. This song's pretty much awesome for anyone who just became an adult. Newsflash: being an adult doesn't mean being old enough to smoke, or drink, or even having a full-time job. Being an adult means that you have to buy your own toilet paper, you're happy to get socks for Christmas, you're tired all the time, and you have the capability to screw your life up so permanantly that even your mom can't bail you out of it. ... Man, I want to be a teenager again. | |
| Bad Religion – I Love My Computer Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I agree with the person who said it's not (precisely) about the evil of modern society or hating your computer or anything... it's just about how much easier it is to have a computer than a relationship. You can get pretty much everything you could want from the internet, but you don't ever have to get emotionally involved. If it's about modern society at all, it's about how people are afraid to be hurt, so they'd rather just not deal with it, and because of computers they don't have to. He doesn't really say if this is good or bad... you're just supposed to think about it. PS: uh, yes, your relationship with god is TOTALLY something Bad Religion is concerned about. >_> |

| Zebrahead – Hello Tomorrow Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think it's about a serial relationship... you know, you break up and get back together and break up and get back together again... looks like this happened three times, and she broke up with him again, and it hurt, but this time he is determined to get over her instead of trying it again, because he knows it won't work. So, he's not over her now, but he feels like he will be soon (tomorrow) and he's tired of their relationship bascially being them trying to stay together because it was good once (yesterday). | |
| Eve 6 – Enemy Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| it doesn't necessarily have to be HIV, though in this context it probably was... when I was in college, I thought I was pregnant. As I walked to the free clinic, thinking of how badly I might have screwed myself over with stupid behaviour, and how much I wanted a hug, and worrying about the choices I might have to make, I had this CD on, and though I had never really listened to this song carefully before, the meaning suddenly jumped up and attacked me. So, it really works for any STD (or pregnancy)... any trouble you can get yourself into with stupid sexual behaviour. (Needless to say I did not do anything so retarded again.) | |
