Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know how many people will want to read this, but this is sufficient for covering a lot of the references to the Bible within the song and the possibility of their meaning. I tried to divide it up into certain and main topics for easier reading/referencing.

(I am a religion major, as well, so I find it interesting.)

**JESUS CHRIST:
Jesus Christ is part of the Trinity, which is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son is the incarnate of Jesus of Nazareth. In the Bible, the chapter known as John is chock-full of references to this. John 1:1, John 1:14, John 1:18...

John 8:23-24 -- "But he (Jesus) continued, 'You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins."
John 8:58 -- "'Very truly I tell you, ' Jesus answered, 'before Abraham was born, I am!'"

"I am" is what God spoke in the Old Testament and claimed as one of His names--which is Yahweh, which translates to 'I am'; when Jesus spoke it, he claimed a name of God for himself and thus confirms fully his rightful claim as the Son of God.

John 10:38 -- "But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the MIRACLES, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."

So: 'Jesus Christ, that’s a pretty face,
the kind you’d find on someone that could save.
If they don’t put me away,
well it’ll be a miracle.' -- References to Jesus's abilities to heal and save, references to Jesus's abilities to do works of faith--miracles, such as with Lazarus.

**JESUS DIED FOR THREE DAYS
Jesus predicted his death by the people multiple times before it came; the old testament has multiple prophecies concerning his death. The "Sign of Jonah" is how the people were to know he was the Son of God: Jonah was stuck in the belly of a giant fish for three days before he was finally brought out. It was the same for Jesus: Jesus would be dead for three days before he returned. Someone earlier stated Jesus went to hell for three days--that is not true. Jesus went into the heart of the earth for three days, he did NOT go to Sheol.

It is stated in the Bible: Matthew 12:39-40...
"For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

The significance of 'three days' is throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. Genesis, Samuel, Esther, 2 Chronicles, 1 Kings, Luke and Matthew all refer to 'three days' and shows how common this idiomatic usage was.

**"I'M NOT SCARED TO DIE"/"JUST A BIT SCARED OF WHAT COMES AFTER"
John 3:16-17... "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
Romans 5:8... "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

If this character or Jesse or whomever this song is about has accepted Christ into his heart, then he has no fear of where he is going and is assured eternal life in heaven. Although, he is wondering about his ascention to heaven: how will that work out?

**"DOES THOMAS ASK TO SEE MY HANDS?"
This refers to what is called a "Doubting Thomas". Thomas was a pessimist, he never saw the glass as half-full. He is full of courage, though, and went with Jesus and the other disciples near Jerusalem which is where a lot of Jesus's opposition was. He watched from a distance Jesus get nailed to a cross and saw him die.

So, when people come and tell Thomas, "Jesus has risen again! We saw his hands, where the nails were--we saw his chest, where they speared him!" Thomas doesn't believe it. He is fatalistic and saw with his own eyes that Jesus died. Part of him died when Jesus died. He says he will not believe it until he SEES with his own eyes the marks on his hands and until he can PUT HIS HAND into a wound upon Jesus's body.

Jesus appears, and he says, "Shalom, peace be with you." Thomas is shocked at seeing this. Jesus holds out his hands, marked where the nails went through. Jesus says, "Put your hand in my side." Thomas begins to weep and no longer doubts. He is the first person in the Bible to proclaim Jesus as, "My Lord and my God!", to proclaim in truth was Jesus was.

(John 20:24-29 is this exact passage for those who need a reference.)

**WOOD AND NAILS:
Symbolic of Jesus's death, how he shed his very own blood in order to wash the world free of it's sin. A free gift, for those who wish to accept Jesus Christ as their saviour and take the forgiveness which can be theirs.

The wood is the cross, the nails are what keep us to the cross--our sins. The act of Jesus carrying his cross and then dying upon it was that of atonement for all sin. However, Jesus was blameless and his cross was therefore pure, he carried no cross before that. We, however, are not pure: we have sins, and our cross is our punishment. We carry our sins with us all through our life, it weighs on us until we get redemption.

Matthew 10:38 ... "Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me."

**"NAIL YOU BACK UP"
I think this is what it refers to: The greatest sin, one that is unforgivable, is in Matthew 12 and Mark 3.

Matthew 12:32: "Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."
Mark 3:28-29: "Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven all their sins and all the blasphemies they utter. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven but is guilty of an eternal sin."

This sin, in simpler words, is to permanently reject Jesus Christ and the gift of forgiveness. To turn it down and deny so that no repentence is possible. To nail Jesus to the cross again, in essence... as Jesse sings, "I'll try to nail you back up." To makes Jesus's death worthless in your eyes, to nail him to the cross again we he needn't die once more. As if one death wasn't enough.

**YOU'LL COME FOR THE PEOPLE LIKE ME

Jesus ate with those who were sinners, he did not surround himself with holy people. He went to those who needed grace and healing and miracles.

Matthew 9:12 ... "On hearing this, Jesus said, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' FOR I HAVE NOT COME TO CALL THE RIGHTEOUS, BUT SINNERS.'"

That's about as much as I have time to cover, but I hope this helps who ever was curious about the Biblical references and the meaning(s) of the song. :-)

Brand New – You Won't Know Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm a religion major so I know the Bible pretty well.

"So they say, they say in Heaven theres no husbands or wives" -- it is true, it says in the Bible there are no husbands or wives, there is no marriage.

Here: Matthew 22:29-30 ...

"Jesus replied, 'You are in error because you do not know the scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.'"

Again: Mark 12:24-25...

"Jesus replied, 'Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.'"

A third time, and my favourite, Luke 20:34-36...

"Jesus replied, 'The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels...'"

This further supports the album's consistent Biblical references that I keep hearing and reading. I love it, this album is amazing. :-)

Brand New – Degausser Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't necessarily agree with swampscotia. When he sings, "When we were made, we were set apart," I think this is an allusion toward God and the creation of man. After all, the title of the album is "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me" and the entire album has so many Biblical references that I don't believe he would just jump to plato suddenly for something so blatant as Adam and Eve.

God created the heaven and earth, He created the plants and the animals. Then He made man and woman, in order to walk in companionship with Him. He set man and woman apart from the creatures, by creating them in His image. Animals are ignorant even to their own ignorance, and God is omniscient knowing all things, and man and woman are in the middle... aware of their ignorance but also cognitive. Set apart from animals in the beginning, set apart from God after the deception and the apple...

Plain White T's – A Lonely September Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought this song was about a guy and a girl who messed around in the beginning, not thinking anything special of it. But they still keep in touch and see each other and start to build from there: she shares her ideas and past with him, he let's her see his deeper side, meaning they become close; soon enough, they realize they are in love, when in the beginning, all they meant for it to be was some random play. They didn't mean for any of it to happen and they don't know how to continue on because it's always such a confusing thing when stuff doesn't go according to plan, and now he's lamenting that they aren't really together now... which is all he wants since he's realized how good they are together.

I don't think this song has anything to do about God, Frankster.

I think that it's about a guy who who is falling to pieces ever since he lost the girl he loved. All he's saying is that she can do anything she wants to him, as long as she is with him. (Hence, 'Crush me, tear me, break me, mold me, make me what you want me to be, I am yours for your to use, or take and replace me with you...')

Paul Simon – Under African Skies Lyrics 19 years ago
I always believe that "Joseph's face was black as night" was suggesting his race. I assumed this is from travelling many days under the beating sun of Africa.

But, I also believe in the Biblical reference. It's been suggested that Jesus was not caucasian, but rather dark skinned--so I would figure that other figures would be dark skinned as well. Hence, why I think, "His face was black as night" is merely just a verbal representation of that theory.

Cat Power – Good Woman Lyrics 20 years ago
I actually feel this song is about her seeing a bonafide "bad boy"-- a guy who is no good for her. She loves him, she is attracted to him, she wants him, but she knows that it is not a healthy relationship for her.

She wants to be a good woman, not getting into trouble and having a good relationship. She wants him to be a good man, one who won't drink every night or have one-night stands or what-have-you. She wants to have a good relationship, essentially.

But it's not going to happen. She realizes that she can't change him. He's going to forever be a bad man, and she in turn does not want to turn into a bad woman--by either taking on his bad habits, or by holding herself back from finding a good man.

She obviously sees past his faults, yet she cannot hide from the fact that the faults could someday grow stronger than their love, and thus overtake the relationship and send it into ruins. She is ending it before it gets out of hand and before that happens, so she can keep her good memories. She's preventing the bad.

Cat Power – He War Lyrics 20 years ago
I actually believe it's a song about a girl who wants a guy that someone else has. (So, in this case, the video is correct.)

"I never meant to be the needle that broke your back" -- He knows that she wants him, and it bothers him. She's a problem for him, because he's with someone else.

When she sings, "He war, he war, he will kill for you" it's Chan singing that he loves the girl he's with and that he wouldn't leave the girl for Chan.

She's not the "hot new chick" -- she's not a girl attractive enough (physically and personality-wise) to pull him away from his current paramour.

It's her pining over someone she can't have, mainly due to the fact he will not abandon his current relationship with the girl he loves for her.

Ashlee Simpson – Eyes Wide Open Lyrics 20 years ago
Part of me really doesn't like the ghost theory. Actually, all of me doesn't like it. There's something about it that makes me think it's deeper, like it's about sexual abuse of a girl.

I believe the character singing it is the one who was abused sexually. Many times, when events like that happen, the female (or male) tries to detach themselves mentally and emotionally from the situation at hand, which can make it easier to handle, by pretending it wasn't you it happened to, but someone else.

"I could hear her breathing / No one believed me, no one believed me" -- After the attack. Ragged, broken breathing--trying to catch her breath and get her senses together. She tells people what happened, but no one can believe her, or no one chooses to believe her.

"I could hear those voices / So deceiving, so deceiving" -- Often in sexual encounters involving abuse, the attacker is someone that the victim knows personally. She hears the voice(s) the she recognizes as people she knows, and realizes how she has been deceived, how they have led her into being trusting, which she later reminisces on by seeing how wrong she was to trust them.

"Cool wind on my face" is something that seems calming, soothing. Along with detaching oneself from the body and event, imagining pleasant situations while it is happening probably makes it easier to take. Cool wind would be such a situation.

This is the point of the song that really makes me think it's about sexual abuse: when she asks, "Do you know what it feels to be afraid? Lying there frozen, with my eyes wide open?" She asks this because she has felt fear at the very core. She couldn't do anything about it, couldn't escape from the situation, she was frozen. Eyes being wide open may be metaphorical--a loss of innocence, the event has opened her eyes to the cruelty and sad reality of the world; not everything can be perfect.

"I know your secret / I can feel you calling" -- She knows the truth; she knows her secret. Something inside her is dying to let people know, but she is unable to. Perhaps fear of not being believed again, or fear of reliving the experience. "I know that you're there" shows she can not deny what happened to her, she knows the girl who was raped/sexually abused is her.

By keeping alive the memories, she is showing that she won't forget what happened to her. She will carry them with her and not bury them and try to forget.

"I heard you / I felt you / I know, so what do you want from me?" -- She heard him, she heard his voice and recognized it. She felt him, she knows who he is (the attacker). She knows that is wasn't a dream, that it was real, and now that it's done and over, she asks what is left? What does he want from her that he hasn't already taken?

And the end, she retreats once again to the calming situation of a cool breeze, to retreat from the painful memories again.

Sahara Hotnights – A Perfect Mess Lyrics 20 years ago
A song about recognizing mistakes you have made; regret for things you have done; feelings of worthlessness.

Although it says there is no regret, I believe it's quite contrary: there is plenty of regret. Often, people try to remedy the after-effect of bad decisions by claiming that they regret nothing. This is often just a farce.

The said female has been throwing herself into reckless situations in the hopes of finding herself and finding meaning. But some of the things she does is ironic to this, such as meaningless sex. Already in a relationship with another, she is suffering feelings of confusion and something is missing in her current relationship. So she essentially cheats, and in the aftermath, is coming to the realization that there is no turning back once it's done. She recognizes the fact that she has done the worst thing she could to her boyfriend/husband: she has breached the assumed promise of faithfulness by committing adultery.

And so she remains. Her boyfriend/husband is awake, waiting for her, and probably coming to realize what she may be doing. She fears that she will encounter conflict with him, scared he will find out somehow. "What have you done?" is the eternal question that she is being plagued by. She has no idea what came over her, why she took such a drastic step and probably realizes there really wasn't anything missing in her relationship afterall--she was just being insecure. So now she feels that she has ruined a good thing, and is completely lacking in pride.

In the end, she knows it's going to bite her in the ass.

Ringside – Trixie Lyrics 20 years ago
First off, I want to point out the name play in this song. "Trixie" refers to a female who is, well, tricksy. The said female is cunning and sly. She can play the part like no other girl, make guys fall for her as easy as no tomorrow.

"Oh my – my mind's playing tricks on me" = He's trapped by her, he sees something that she is not; rather, he is seeing what she portrays, but he knows the truth.
"I’m falling for something I know – I cannot reach" = He's falling for a girl who isn't real, but rather just an act.
"Can I lay with you – and still live with myself" = Can he become intimate with her, all while denying that it's all a facade? Can he ignore that he is with someone that is not real?
"I feel I know you – but you’re someone else" = More reiteration of the idea that he has fallen for her, yet she is playing tricks on him--she is something unreal, a character.

The chorus covers the idea that she is cruel to feed off his emotions like that; she gets a kind of twisted enjoyment out of playing with guy's hearts. She can put on any face, any personality, for the sake of winning someone over. She gets under guy's skin, and "infects them."

"Trixie girl – man you’re good" = Tricksy girl; he recognizes her game.
"You’re the low spark in my neighborhood" = She's the nadir in his life; the low-point. Something he doesn't want to deal with but it's going to be there forever until it's remedied.
"And damn you’re convincing" = She's successful at putting on a show, and pretending that he's the only guy she wants.
"I can’t stand you kissing the other guys" = He's not the only one--many other guys are her victim. Once again, he acknowedges that he knows she's fake. Yet, something in him is protective--he wants to be the only guy she kisses, the only one she wants.
"Come back to my window and cry like a schoolgirl" = I think this refers to a trick she's done. I'm sure that in an effort to make him believe in her, she portrayed emotions of sadness. This often gets guys wanting to protect the girl, to make them no longer sad, and thus strengthen the attraction and connection between the two...
"In your sad disguise" = ...yet he, once again, recognizes that it was false. She is nothing but fake games.

One of my favourite songs on the album.

Damien Rice – I Remember Lyrics 20 years ago
Before reading Damien's explanation of the song, this is what I felt... that it was more of a story:

This song presents, at the start, the view of a beginning and end to a romance from a female perspective. It's gentle, and soft, something sweet that can be felt through the sound of her voice. The sentimental aspect is recurrent in the frequent "I remembers", followed by specific descriptions of her emotions and seemingly insignificant things. It's common knowledge that when someone is smitten, they seem to remember the oddest details. ("There was wet in your hair", "your mouth"...)

I'm going to paint a picture: She is probably out, I like to imagine at a party of some sort. She is coming down the stairs, and in he comes in the front door. It's been raining out, and his hair retains the water, and she stops for a moment. Everyone has felt that--the jump in the stomach, the pause in your heart, as you see someone you are undeniably attracted to. This is what happens to her. They become acquainted and a relationship between them begins. He is a singer, and she faithfully goes to his shows, willing to go through rain and despite her own emotional stability at the time ("Taxied out of the storm" / "My ships were sailing"). She recalls how mesmerized she was by him, how in love she was. Just watching the movement of his mouth was magnificent.

The chorus is her remembering "them", as a couple. She is longing and wanting for him, in the ruins of a break up. She is feeling nothing but sadness, missing him. She keeps mentioning, "I can't believe what I've found"--she was so lucky. I believe she was the one who initiated the break-up, after reveling to him that she felt underappreciated. She perhaps mentioned she felt second to his music, like his music was his second lover. Now she is painfully regretting it because she is reasoning that she may have been just feeling insecure, and the only thing that can "take her down"--or diminish any hopes of them being together again--is him, by telling her it's over for good.

I think the end of this song is the most beautiful and also the strongest part of the song. Here is the entrance of masculinity, aggressiveness and a forceful need, almost primitive. The male character is calling out to everyone who has felt the same pain, everyone who listens to his music, to come to his shows, to listen to him. His music is the only love he has now since she left him, and he will utilise it--he wants everyone to hear what his songs have to say. He is hoping that his words can cure him from his heartbreak, that his singing can remove the pain and the sting. It will be his therapy until things are sorted out.

"This is love / this is porn" is one of the best lines of the song: it shows his frusteration, and his cynicism, toward his failed romance. There was something so pure and natural between them, yet it became vulgar through the raw emotions that disconnected them. The insecurities of her being unable to put up with things and his inability to fix it cause him to feel that it was perhaps a sham. Porn is a fantasy, and perhaps that was all they had together--fantasy. If it was real, they would have been able to hold it together.

Saying that God will forgive him, but he'll whip himself, is him regretting things. Regretting he couldn't hold it together, and wishing he could have been better. He wants it all back again, he doesn't want to leave everything behind. The last verse of the song is him saying he wants to hear what she feels now. He wants to know if she still loves him, if she still wants him. He wants to know what it is she wanted that he couldn't give, what she wants now--all because he wants her again.

The heartbreaking part of this song is that they, both the female and the male in this song, are wanting each other back after the end of their relationship--yet neither has stepped forward yet to make the first repairs. The girl is just wishing, and wanting, and the male is being stubborn and waiting for her to come along.

I absolutely adore this song and Damien's part.

Pixies – Is She Weird Lyrics 20 years ago
My turn.

I only believe that it's about a "vampire" in the sense that the female the song is about is parisitic on men, she leeches them for all they are worth. Essentially a "gold-digger", she requires a male to provide her with everything she wants and needs.

Is she weird: I think the first part refers to, "Is she a character? Is she interesting? Does she put on a show?" All for the sake of winning over whatever man she is feeding off of.

Is she white, is she promised to the night: It's asking which of the two it is. Is she white = is she pure? Is she promised to the night = does she whore herself? It's summing up whether or not she is used.

The next verse supports the both the idea she is false, only a character she plays, and that she is actually promised to the night. Her mouth is "ripshit" is referring to everything she has to say is a lie, is false, not real. The idea her mouth is everywhere could refer to either, or both, the idea that she is convincing and plays to many men; and/or she is promiscuous with many males. The idea that he's lying in it is saying he's been sucked in by her, she's made him fall for whatever character she's put on for her own personal gain.

Asking if she is over him is after she's used him for what she wanted. She got whatever it was she was after, and dropped him and went after another. However, he's been so smitten by her that he still wants her back. The girl had a talent for making others feel what they wanted to feel, and she made him fall for her, and now that she's gone--he wants her back. He wonders if he is the only one still wanting her, if she wants him back, if she ever wanted him. When bringing up 'like the stars and the sun', it gives a sense that he feels inferior to her, that she was so good--too good for him. As posed before, she is a great actor who can put on a good show and make people feel things they want to feel.

Her head has no room because nothing she knows is her, as said many times before, she is just a character. She has many faces and many roles, she can be the vixen or the good-girl--but nothing real. Her head is too full of everything else to have room for the real girl there used to be, before being taken over by the greed and want of materialistic items that she digs for in others.

When he comes in with the "no more of this girl cryin', I'm here, your big man--you're mine", it's him still in a trance by her. He still believes that she loved him and that he was (and is) her provider. (Remember "is she over me?" He wants her back.) He has probably encountered her crying, which was most likely caused by a guy she tried to win over not falling for it--or her actually falling for a guy she tried to play, and losing him. A taste of her own medicine. So this guy comes back into the picture, trying to get her back, ignoring that she actually only used him.
