The latest edition of Rolling Stone has an article about Led Zeppelin, and there is a part of it that elaborates on the meaning of this song. Evidently, Robert Plant wrote it about the band's relationship with America and how they didn't like a lot of what was going on in American politics with the war and everything. I like to see this as a love song or a coming of age song. Whatever it means, it sure was said beautifully! |

I think saying "everyone assumes that all songs are about drugs" is a gross generalization. Again, this song can be relate to substance abuse line for line. Doesn't mean that people can't take away whatever they want from it. |

This song is definitely about substance abuse. Anyone who has dealt with substance abuse in the past, or knows a family member or loved one who has, would agree that the man in this song is trying to kick a drug or drinking habit. There are undertones in the song that have to do with love, but this is because the man in the song is pushing away the people he loves most because of his substance abuse. Obviously the song can be taken in different ways, but this makes complete sense to me. |
