The Fray – Say When Lyrics 16 years ago
Without a doubt this is the most complicated songs on the "The Fray" album. There is SO much that needs to be understood about the band before trying to fully understand any of their music - all bad members are Christian, every song can be interpreted in more than one way, most of the songs Isaac writes has some sort of basis in reality of his own experience or someone close to him, but ultimately it's what the song means to you (or at least what you think it means). Case in point - I thought the song "how to save a life" was about a break-up, which is how I identified with the song in my life, yet, Isaac is writing about a drug intervention.

ANYWAY, this song really throws me in a lot of directions because it has a very literal meaning until the part that says "maybe god, can
Be on both sides of the gun, never understood why..." which is the only part of the song that I connect with because it seems so left field to throw in a religious analogy to a song thY can be taken so literally as friends that are there for each other, or an abusive relationship from a third party... Which really got me thinking - I'm having a terrible time in life and I don't blame God but definitely wonder why.. Yet the more I think about this song the "man" could simply be God wanting you to turn to him when you've had enough (or when you've "said when" - like in a restaurant when you want to stop your waiter from pouring something).

But the curve ball that is quoted above fits into this song meaning because it shows the Christian side that God is actually on both side of the gun, no matter where it's pointed, and it's all part of his plan.

I know that I'm coming off as a religious zealot, but that's really not the case - I'm agnostic (raised Christian). For those that took the time to read, I'll actually be hanging out with the band in the beginning of august in Seattle (have lots of connections) and will ask them and repost when I find out.

James Blunt – Wisemen Lyrics 20 years ago
I like this song because it is so atypical of what most artists will try to convey in their music. We've got quite a few, probably more thought out, ideas of what this song could mean; but i'll try to throw you into a loop.

So, I think this song is about finding yourself (as so many these days are). I think instead of referring to 3 people, he is referring to himself in three different stages of his life.
Verse 1 is just talking about his earlier life and a relationship and some drug use, and partying and whatnot.
Verse 2 is also stage 2, where he is caught up in the "talent show" of the world -- obvious to his success, it is him. and how people judge celebrities in their fancy clothes.. where they have no right to judge. all he wants to do is what he loves-- make music. screw everyone else.
contrary to the lyrics, the instrumental verse three is kind of the unknown.. or the third wiseman. where his future is unknown- maybe he'll disappear after this album. live on the beach, smoke some weed... who knows.

The chorus asks the question "where are you now".. almost what stage of life are you in... are you a selfish bastard, chasing women, getting stoned, not caring about authorities? or are you in the limelight trying to get out? or simply, lost in translation.. searching for meaning.

The Calling – One By One Lyrics 20 years ago
so why say "deep dark, fucked up, played out reality show".. and not comprise it in the lyrics of... really anywhere? its not really something that just "slips out" or gets forgotten.

Citizen Cope – Son's Gonna Rise Lyrics 20 years ago
lets all take the time to listen to the song, instead of read the lyrics and learn something. chours' in the song are not repetative... "well, the sun's gonna rise in mile..." and "well, a son's gonna rise..." very different. i think cope is trying to make a point with "the" and "a"... namely that yes, a child will be born, but then again -- its just another day. he finds justice in saying that, well okay, the only thing we are certain of in this life is that it will continue.. or rather... the sun will rise.

yeah. that'll do.

Citizen Cope – Bullet And A Target Lyrics 20 years ago
So, I'm thinking that this song is definitely about betrayal. Any song can mean whatever you want, or make it mean, but I think this best fits. So first verse is about the betrayal that we see all through society -- mrs. dali llamas -- betrayal of religion to have a female dali llama. heroine addicts of the future -- condemning people to drugs by not dealing with the problems they are facing in the now. sierra leon - obvious. church wasnt honest - duh. teacher said no college-- giving up too soon on the youth, another form of betrayal. look for it, and its clear.

next he brings us to a specific instance - this girl gets involved with a crazy, gun-brandishing psycho. and he talks about how she got there -- father who didnt care / wasnt there, getting knocked up, just an all around bad situation. BUT. he does leave us with a quasi-happy ending, in that, "check the cover of a magazine, i'm just wondering how, just wondering how." its either a. everything turns out all right for this girl (she's a model) or b. looking at a headline of a magazine like time or forbes to see more corruption and problems in the world...
