The song is sweet, but if two people are so alike I think there are some pros and cons. "We used to have a lot of things in common, but you know now we're just the same." So do they really have anything in common if they're just the same? I know that sounds backwards, but really, like let's say if you love everybody just the same, what do you really value? Nothing, because you love no one more than anyone else. To value something sort of implies that you think something is worth more than something else. If you were in a relationship and they said "I love you," but valuing you no more than anyone else, what kind of worth would those words have? I think this song is a lot more tragic to me, but there are some who do appreciate the security that comes with having a partner just like oneself. I think I just lean towards having more of a balance, like an opposite. The two verses about how their hearts and minds wander away from each other but then come back with a kiss or song is cute, but kind of shows how the physical gestures outweigh the heartfelt or mindful ones. |

The refrain "if it's not like I told you, then it's still your call..." reminds me of a past relationship in which I concentrated so much on the potential she had, while she wanted me to force her to do anything. It was so contradictory. It's like, I can tell you what to do, but you have to make the choice. Respect your freedom of choice, and everything won't be hard- it's about the dilemma of pursuing what you want and even before that, figuring it out, and shaking off the fear of getting hurt if you do make a choice- that really Bogarts people so often. "I don't move in fear of getting knocked down." I love that Jeff sings this so simply. |
