This song is about getting over loving someone who doesn’t love you. I think I think this because it relates to me, so just bear with me. When he says, ‘In pitch dark, I go walking in your landscape, broken branches trip me as I speak’, he’s saying that he’s going through all his memories of her in his head (her landscape), and he’s telling himself that she loves him, but he’s tripping over the broken branches of the reality, which is that she doesn’t. When he says, ‘There’s always a siren, singing you to shipwreck,’ he’s saying that he’s trying not to think of her that way, but it’s hard because he’s so used to it. When Thom sings, ‘Steer away from these rocks, or be a walking disaster’, it’s that he’s trying not to think of her, because if he does, it will just make him feel even worse about the situation. The ‘There’s someone on your shoulder waiting’ it means that she’s still there in the back of his head, and he’s trying hard to get her out. ‘We are accidents waiting to happen’ means that if he tells her how he feels, it will only tear him apart because he knows she doesn’t feel that way about him. ‘There, there’ is when he’s comforting himself about it. I think when Thom says, ‘Just ‘cause you feel it, doesn’t mean it’s there’, is talking about love, and how just because you think someone loves you, it doesn’t mean that they do. Just because someone flirts and jokes around and is there with you all the time, doesn’t mean that they love you back. Even if you feel the butterflies in your stomach, doesn’t mean they should be there. i don't see why people are trying to complicate the meaning of this AMAZING song. i dunno, say i'm not really looking into the lyrics very deeply, but i think this is just a simple love song. about having butterflies in your stomach, about just that indescribable feeling when you're falling for someone, and just that closeness that you feel to them, how soft their skin is under your fingertips... i think this song is from a deceased father to his young son or daughter who's still alive.
