Basically about an old fellow who's surprised by how Ireland has changed. Went off to fight for Ireland (probably in 1916 or the War of Independence) and how it was all done his wife. His town changes and becomes a city and his entire way of life changes with service industries and falling church attendence. He's unable to cope with the Celtic Tiger's individualism (compared to the old Irish sense of community) and the loss of his family. |

I agree with Latchkey Kid. THis song is about the church,especially my dear own catholic church. First verse is about the inquisition who tortured and burnt people alive on the stake for heresy and how eventually the church's power waned,second verse is about the meetings held in the vatican about the clerical abuse scandal(Jesuits is indeed a christian group but also refers to any followers of Jesus)I thought I was ever so clever working out the rouge referred to the cardinals but people here worked it out well before I did.
Third verse is just about how the modern world rejects religion in general.
However I must disagree with Hraesvelg. By calling a religious person's views "ridiculous" you are being every bit as narrow minded as all those fundementalists who claim only the religion they belong to is a valid religion.It irritates the fuck out of me when some person comes along and flouts the fact that they believe in no God as if they are somehow more rational and more advanced than others.If you don't believe in God fine,to each his own but don't act as if your superior to others who think God exists.Fuck off and have a nice day |

Yeah you're right, he was indeed in Mountjoy which is what this song is about.My mistake, though he was in Borstal before that and borstals were meant for 16 to 21 year olds in Ireland so a woman's prison wouldn't be out of the question :D |

You call christians narrow minded and make such a generalization.Tsk. Very few christians are like the ones you see on TV.The bible doesnt tell us to go around getting as much money as possible, quite the opposite: Acts of the Apostles at chapter 2 and verses 42, 44, and 45:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and in fellowship ... 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things in common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
but the ones who are greedy and narrow minded get more press and give all christians a bad name. Take punk for example, a minority are white supremacist and commit violence, because of this many people think punk is a violence loving subculture.How do you feel about this? It sickens me when a greedy person uses christianity as an excuse for exploitation but look at how many good people were christian:Oscar Romero,Martin Luther King,Mother Theresa, Sister Emmanuelle.All were religious and stood up for those who couldnt.Even Jesus stood up to the fundementalists of his day.
Dont generalize about something like this, it makes you hypocritical when you try to accuse them of narrow mindedness and then pull crap yourself |

This song is about Mick's friendship with Robin Banks, who he went to school with, they would do anything to alleviate boredom- fighting with bullies, answering back to teachers, and were kicked out.Mick concentrated on learning guitar properly(I practiced daily in my room) and RObin got caught up with a group of guys who robbed betting shops.RObin was sent to prison, thats pretty much the backround to the song |

This song is just about the way shit jobs were foisted on the young during the late 70s, the line about taking away prescription is the state of the NHS which was struggling(as it is now) with lack of funding, the line about conscription is about reintroduction of civil service and the line about letter bombs is when Mick worked for a Social Services office where his job was to open letters, due to a bomb scare, Mick hated this due to the awful treatment of the Irish and Blacks at the offices

This song was written by the same guy who did the Irish national anthem, Brendan Beehan.He wrote it about when he was in borstal when he was young according to my IRish teacher, this can be seen from all the words like the warder screaming etc |

I think theres way to much aggro here, one thing I love about going back to Ireland is the unity there, listen to The Gangs all here by the Dropkicks, I love the feeling of companionship in Dropkick songs, so stop using this song as an excuse to rail against each other, the songs been well explained, its another modern Irish folk song, about a guy getting deported to Australia for trying to help his kids survive the famine, for the record my grandparents were from AMerica after thier ancestors moved from the famine, so it wasnt all protestants who moved there,for the record, few Irish people support the IRA, theyve set the peace process back a long while |
