death and rebirth the song begins in a state of death 'this is the end my only friend the end of everything that stands the end' Insanity and pain reigns prior to the rebirth 'lost in a Roman wilderness of pain and all the children are insane' rebirth comes with the freedom acid/mystical experience brings 'waiting for the summer rain' The summer rain represents a replenishing 'ride the king's highway' 'ride the snake' 'blue bus' = mystic trip and with the cleansing summer rain comes the fight for freedom which begins with acid and culminates with the climax of the song--the ultimate journey into the forbidden--the eternal taboo--patricide and incest These actions are merely symbolic of complete rebellion 'father? yes, son? i want to kill you mother? I want to fuck you' After the climax where jim fucks his mother, the blue bus carries the listener downhill to where the song completes the cycle 'come on, baby, take a chance with us and meet me at the back of the blue bus' Unlike the openeing of the song, however, death at the end of the song represents a fulfilled and 'ripened' life brought to its natural end rather than a 'desperate' and helpless state of dying 'this is the end my only friend, the end it hurts to set you free but you'll never follow me' |

Hence the intense highs and despairng lows--the pleasures and treasures are found but despairing tears remain; the perfect woman, although seemingly a paradise and refuge from the oppressive world, can also be an imprisoning chain whose lies and misdeeds emanate from her eyes--the gateway to the soul. |
