After listening to this a few times and watching the video, I believe this is a song about a mother who gave her child up for adoption and as the years go by is always thinking of him. 1st verse - He was just a baby when she let his life but it wasn't because she didn't love him, she wanted a better life for him (meant for more than...) 2nd verse - continues the idea that she wants a good life for him, but understands he might end up affected by not having her around (little bit dappy) Chorus - Fly (live your life freely), Feel your mother at your side (She's with him in spirit), Don't you know you got my eyes (No matter how far apart he will always have the same eyes as her and their bond will always exist.) I'll make you fly (setting him free from a dead-end fate by giving him away), I know you can make it right (She has faith he will find a way to move past the abandonment issues and find a way to live peacefully) Verse 3 - She knows his life will be upset by giving him up, but only for a short while until he settles into a new life, and deep down he will always feel her spirit in his happy earliest memories. I think the video works with this too as it shows a woman pained with the image of a little boy, trying to find him but being unable to in the end. |

I've been thinking about the end verse some more... I now believe that "Awake and unafraid" refers to his waking life, that he has overcome his fear of existence and is ready to face what comes. "Asleep or dead" now tells me that he doesnt think of death as a scary nemesis, its the same as sleeping, and he will remain unafraid regardless. |

Heres my inerpretation of this song. I took the lyrics directly from the Albums book. "Now I know that I cant make you stay But where's your heart?" He's lying on his deathbed, the final hour is drawing near, and hes saying his last words to his lover. Hes admitting that he cant make her stay with him until the very end,but hes asking where her "heart" is, meaning strength and compassion. It would take both to stay with the one you love as you watch the life fade from their eyes. "And I know there's nothing I could say To change that part" The part of their story, their past, the hard times theyve had. "So many bright lights that cast a shadow But can I speak " Without evil there can be no good, and without shadow there is no light. The Patient is stating that with so much good in the world, there will inevitably be some troubled dark spots, and he is asking if its ok to talk about them. "Well, is it hard understanding? I'm incomplete A life that's so demanding I get so weak A love that's so demanding I cant speak" He's explaining that his soul is not perfect (like any humans) and that he always felt drained by life, and drained by love. Hes almost apologizing... "I am not afraid to keep on living I am not afraid to walk this world alone Honey, if you stay, I'll be forgiven Nothing you can say could stop me going home" Its ironic that the Patient is the one whos about to die, yet hes the one belting out that he isnt afraid to keep living, showing that the band believes death ot be just another part of a longer life, and that the Patient has learned in this life that he has the strength to see whats on the other side of death. At the same time hes telling his love to stay in this world, and not to kill herself, because if she lives a happy life then the Patient will feel like his life had some purpose to it, to help strengthen his love. "Can you see my eyes are shining bright cuz i'm out here on the other side Of a jet black hotel mirror " Every time the lover looks in a mirror (I picture those black tinted mirrors you sometimes find in hotel lobbies) she would see a distorted reflection of herself, and at the same time should feel the Patient smiling back at her from the other side of death, and his eyes are shining because hes proud and happy that she is carrying on. "These bright lights have always blinded me " The Patient has been blind his whole life, not realizing that the good things in life were the cause. Now his eyes have adjusted to the light and he can see that life is a beautiful thing. "I see you lying next to me with words I thought I'd never speak Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead " This shows that in the end his lover decided to stay with him until the end, laying beside him in his final moments, however he wakes up and realizes that he has no idea if he died (and has gone to heaven) or if he simply fell alseep and is going to be ok after all. Whatever the case, he has learned from it all and decides to take the opportunity to tell her that he loves her, and says all the things he always meant to say but never did. This song is brilliant, I get a shiver down my spine everytime I hear it...good job MCR! You've earned a place in my heart forever! |

| Metric – Poster of a Girl Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is about one of those girls who doesnt know who she is, therefore she sleeps around just to have someone to be close to. She feels like just an image, just something pretty to look at that doesnt think or feel. I think there are a lot of people in the world who are like this, trying to validate their simple existance by having sex with strangers. | |
| Metric – Live It Out Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This song is all about the limitations we create for ourselves. The singer wants to go out into the world and experience life, but her companion is reluctant to leave the cozy nest of his normal life. However, if we don't take risks and chances then we are already dead, because we aren't living life to the full. | |
