I think a lot of whats been said is just reaching. When people write songs, they might have a generic meaning to it, but not every single line will be exactly what they were getting at. Sometimes lines are for the simple reasons like they couldn't think of anything else to say or anything that fit. Also, it needs to be kept in mind that song writers are just people like you and I and might not necessarily have a great grasp of poetry or... (how ironic is it that I can't think of the word that means having a poor range of words?!! Vocabulary!! Thats the buggar!!) or a large vocabulary. For instance, d'ya really think Noel Gallagher was bothered about the sink being full of fishes and her having dirty dishes on the brain? Or d'ya think he put it there cuz he couldn't think of anything else to say and that rhymed so what the hell? I'd hazard a guess at the latter. Another example is when Paul McCartney was writing Hey Jude he put the line about movement you need being on the shoulder in there to have some lyrics there while he worked out how the song would go. And ended up leaving it in. So basically, sometimes you need to stop analysing lyrics cuz you'll just throw yourself off track. Mart |

I actually sought this site out just now solely to see if tehre was any menaing on this song. There's not but I was so shocked to see that other poeple love this song as much as me that I signed up. What a gloriously excellent song. i agree with whoever said was the highlight of Time Out Of Mind. I'm not really what you'd call a Dylan fan (I just like about a quarter of his stuff) but when he's good he's bloody great! And this, for me anyway, is his finest moment. (Of what I've heard so far by him anyway) |
