Great riff.... the lyrics are super creepy; in my opinion they would've been better matched with darker music, maybe something acoustic or more metal. But fun, catchy song nonetheless. For some reason I associate it with airline travel |

Beautiful song... I heard a great acoustic cover by some male/female duo on college radio last week. I've been looking for it all over the Internet and can't find it. Does anyone know the version I'm talking about, and who it was that covered it? |

what he said.
I hate to refer to a cartoon, but in Family Guy, there's a line in a song something like "we lost the values but kept the pot" referring to the fact that drug use is about the same as it was in the 60s, but no longer carries the free-spirited "love" ideals that it used to; kids now just do drugs for the hell of it. |

| Tupac Shakur – Changes Lyrics

It's funny... listening to this song, I can see just how much things haven't changed in the past twelve years. There's still war in the Middle East (a new war, but a war nonetheless), still a useless war on drugs while poverty grows unchecked, and still violence that achieves nothing. The only change I see is the obvious one--a black President. Hopefully that won't be the only change we see.
By the way, did anyone else mention the sampling of Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is"? The songs have a similar theme. Very effective choice.
Mr. Shakur was a visionary. It's a shame nothing's changed. |

Very poetic song, and wonderfully composed. The second verse, with the drums and strings backing, is very powerful.
Crescendo-- the like "train the monkeys on my back to fight" refers to the expression "monkey on my back" (see Led Zeppelin's "Nobody's Fault but Mine")... the expression is another way of saying that you have a problem that is burdening your mind.
I think in that line, and in that stanza in general, Jon is asking for all that is already slowly happening to quickly commence (wars beginning, the world falling to pieces) and get it over with. |

A lot of Jon's love songs are ambiguous, in that you can't tell if he's singing about God or his wife (he is married, isn't he?). The line "we both know what these open arms are for" makes me think he's singing about his wife, but the line "you're the mark I'm aiming for" could refer to God. Either way, it's a very strong, certain love. |

A beautiful song; solid proof that Waters wasn't the only songwriter in Pink Floyd. This is one of the most inspirational songs I've ever heard, really. The last stanza brings it all together, a call-to-arms of sorts.
In fact, this would've been the most appropriate song for the Floyd to sing at Live 8. It completely encompasses the megashow's goal: to get people aware of the world's suffering that we seem not to notice. |

I've got a problem with this song--yes, it sounds great, very well written, I especially love the very last note--and the lyrics are great as well. I guess I can't relate directly to it because though it IS easier to run from your problems, I just can't help but think it's not the best advice. I think my favorite lyrics here are Mike's part, with the "If I could"'s. It seems like he really wants to change, to get rid of this burden (whatever it may be), but when it proves to be difficult, he instead takes the easy way out--running, trying to pretend nothing ever happened. Denial? Though I suppose writing and singing the song is, in a way, facing the problem. Either way, it's a good song. Chester's got a good voice when he's not screaming. |

He's homesick while out touring, and is telling everyone back home that he'll be back soon, and that he misses everyone. Though the video looks like something you'd see on drugs, I don't think this song was written while Tom was high--it's too well-written. If you want some music written while the writer was on something, check out Bike by Pink Floyd. As for this song, I'm behind EatAPeach. It's about a guy on the "road" of life. Maybe there are some drug references, but it doesn't sound like something a person would write if they were blazed. |

I'm not sure about the whole "whipping thing" (though Jimmy did have a bit of interest in Aleister Crowley, or at least bought his house), but in regards to your "LOG" question, RayMan, someone on here said that the correct lyric is "how to roll, but not collide", which makes more sense anyway.
And yes, Led Zeppelin DID cover a crapload of old blues musicians, usually without giving credit. It makes sense that Plant would be singing about drug addictions here. This might be my favorite harmonica-heavy Zep song, Plant did wonderfully.
RoadRunner: Dude, you say this about EVERY Led Zeppelin song. Being interested in the occult doesn't make them Satanists. Being awesome rock stars doesn't make them Satanists. Jimmy said publically that he was NOT a Satanist. Quit your attention-mongering and do something useful. |

Well, there's a few songs that haven't been edited on the radio, like Pink Floyd's Money and Green Day's Brain Stew. I guess some just slip past the FCC because they're subtle or something. But yeah, I love this song. The tone and lyrics remind me of Last Child. I think Steven might be singing from his mama's perspective, hence the title. There might be a few drug references, but I think it's just about getting off your butt and doing what you set out to do. |

I dunno, osubuckey, I know most of Switchfoot's songs are Christian-based (and awesome songs at that), but this one just sounds like a story of unsuccessful love. He liked a girl, she didn't like him back. It might be about God, but I don't really see it. But your interpretation is a good one, it could go either way.
Does anyone know who's doing the backing vocals on the last chorus? They're really good. |

| Switchfoot – Underwater Lyrics

This, to me, is a song about a girl who lives an unfulfilling life. Since she doesn't have anyone she can rely on
("And any hold that she can find
Something to lean on
Everybody fails her half the time)
so she turns to smoking and drinking ("candle" maybe symbolizing a cigarette... I dunno, maybe--and the "bottle", of course). These just make matters worse, and what's worse, her life's passing before her eyes. Sounds to me like she's on the downward spiral, in over her head, and thinks she's still got time to get out. Like the people who constantly say "I could quit smoking at any time if I wanted to," yet never quit. They deny their addiction. She's in denial as well, over maybe more than one thing. I dunno, just my interpretation. Awesome song, the jazz-piano bit in the middle was a nice touch. |

^I think he (or she?) doesn't want to graduate because of all the friends (s)he'll be leaving and the real world (s)he'll be going into. I personally think it's about being stuck in a world where we all try to conform to a standard of acceptance--in a way, I'm agreeing with MarcusOLP up there. The second part, where Ed sings about buying back memories and awakening old qualities, I think he's talking about starting over from scratch to become a new person--now that he's done that, he's got a long way to run to become the person he wants to be. I don't have much evidence, but the line "processed sanity" makes me think of the sane, bland apathy you see in kids all the time--everyone wants to be normal. But I like everyone's interpretations here, we've got a good group of thinkers here. Rock on CS. |

| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder cover) Lyrics

The religious beliefs of the Peppers has always puzzled me. This song does sound like it's talking about reincarnation, but the "He let me try it again" makes me think otherwise.
The only religions that I know of that support reincarnation are Buddhism and Hinduism (and maybe some New-age stuff)--but then again, Stevie may have had his own beliefs, I don't know if he was Christian or otherwise--but anyway, Buddhism (as far as I know) doesn't have a God-figure ("He" in the song), and I'm pretty sure neither Stevie or Anthony are Hindu. I'm pretty confused, yeah. Maybe "Last time on earth" doesn't literally mean his last life?
Eskimo 8--lol, that's where I heard it too. Heard it again like 8 years later on the radio.
Anyway... awesome song, amazing bass. |

| Fastball – The Way Lyrics

I first heard this song when it came on the radio in '98 or so, and loved it, but they stopped playing it after a while, and I eventually forgot all about it. Then, about a year ago, the chorus randomly popped into my head while I was trying to fall asleep. Excellent song. Before I heard the story of the old couple, I pictured a group of people just getting up one morning and driving off, wandering the highways for eternity. I never pictured them dying, so the whole song turned into a legend of these people who walk along the road with no destination forever. But the other stories here make sense, of the old people dying and their ghosts walking the highway. |

I like everyone's interpretation of this song--while it probably has some deeper meaning, I see it as just a story about an old man--possible with alzheimer's or dementia--who lives within his own mind, alone, listening to Sinatra and "collecting stamps". He possibly doesn't realize that he is old (thus "he says that he'll be rich some day").
Is it just me, or is there some reeeeally faint screaming while the trumpet plays in the last minute or so of the song? |

Hard to believe no one's commented this awesome song. I'm having trouble understanding, but the song seems to tell a story about a girl (in a band, according to the second stanza) who keeps telling herself that her life's all under control, but knows that she's not who she pretends to be and is lost inside. Might also have something to do with a relationship that, although it seems like real love, is just shallow. |
