to me, the first two stanza's are about symbols in life that remind of us of our faith and God's omnipresence. i think this is a a recurring motif of the album, like the "fish bone" in sister that "reminded [him] of why [he] is glad." in this case the symbol is the narrator's vision of seven swans/seven horns. this vision is obviously very powerful, and that is reflected in power the song. this song is hauting, but i'm not sure i would say that it is about a necessarily frightening God. "I will try" is about our constant stuggle with preparing ourselves for heaven (like in "all the trees"). I think "If you run, he will chase you" is about both God's tenacity and omnipresence. you can't run from God, and, to me at least, the last stanza shows that God is forgiving: If you run, he'll chase you, and "give you a second chance." |

After googling the term "fish stone," I am no closer to its meaning in this song. Apparently, a fish stone is "a stone slab, raised on stone or wooden piers, used for the display of fresh fish. Usually found in market places." Also, there is a stongehenge-esque "fish stone" in Wales, that has some sort of legend behind it. Completely speculating, I wondered, "Could this be a Jesus fish Sufjan is referring to?" |
