I'm not sure I agree with the religious analysis of this song. One poster mentioned that the band said it's about succumbing to drug abuse and that makes sense. I initially thought it was about dealing with cancer or some sort of terminal illness. Anyway you slice it, it's pretty bleak. |

| Linkin Park – What I've Done Lyrics

I think the main problem with people not liking this song is that they are expecting to hear Linkin Park continue to write and record the same style of music from their first two albums (essentially, nu-metal with screaming and rapping). Unfortunately for those fans, bands and artists don't always do that. Quite honestly, Linkin Park are very wise to adopt a more grown-up sound. First of all, the group members are now into their late 20's and early 30's and would look ridiculous trying to duplicate the nuances on Hybrid Theory. Moreover, their fans are aging along with them; many of the same people that were rocking out to "One Step Closer" at 18-21 are now 25-28, and I'm guessing they wouldn't enjoy the LP of 2000 so much. Secondly, nu-metal was pretty much on its way to the grave by the time Meteora was released.
If this song is really about global issues - and I think the video reflects that - then it's laudable that they are addressing something bigger than themselves instead of wallowing in "whats-wrong-with-me" lyrical content.
Kudos to LP for this song. |

Anger. Pure and simple. Bassist Vinnie Hornsby says it makes him wanna take his shirt off and throw a right cross. |

This one's pretty easy. I think Jsin26 saw the same DVD that I did...Sonny Mayo said it is a "positive message" about accomplishing your goals despite someone making you feel like a failure for many years. |

I think those are all good interpretations, but could it be deeper than a romantic relationship, maybe a parent-child situation? Maybe this is from the perspective of a person who witnessed something extremely traumatic in their family, and the "crawl on your knees to punish me" part is about a person suffering to make themselves seem like the victim? |

Since nobody's really had anything to offer for this song, I'll take a stab at it. As corny as it may seem, I think there's a feeling of self-exploration...and that to really understand who you are and what your place is in the universe, you have to let go of all your attachments and past trauma. Sometimes that is a frightening thing, but in the end you find out who you really are, not who you wish to be, and that brings clarity and self-confidence. |

| 30 Seconds to Mars – From Yesterday Lyrics

The line is "On a mountain he sits, not of gold but of shit." Not sin. I have listened to the edited version of this song maybe 25 times and every time that line is sung, the last word is censored. There's no reason to censor the word "sin", therefore by process of elimination...you get the deal.
And I can see the soldier explanation, but from the years I've been listening to music and reading interviews with artists, it seems that most songwriters don't always want the words to be taken literally. I would bet this is the case with Jared, because he's also said, "don't take the 30 Seconds to Mars thing literally." The "map of the world" could be a weathered face on anyone, not necessarily someone who has fought in a war, although it doesn't really explain the lines, "see the lives thathe took/From a count to the one/He'll decide when he’s done with the innocent," which could mean war. I don't know. |

I know it's open to interpretation, but I feel like this song could be about a lingering mental disorder or depression of some sort. Maybe the "little child" is the innocent side of someone, and it's always a part of that person despite their flaws. The "fog" could be some kind of depressive or manic episode that clouds the person's thoughts and perceptions. "Baby alligators in the sewers" could be the bad thoughts that one would want to repress and keep underground. "Did you go bad" could be asking the question of how/if the person went from being that innocent child to someone jaded and bitter. "Some things will never wash away" could be a reference to a traumatic event that one will never forget. |

This song reminds me of every shitty day I've ever had, when I want to come home, get under the covers, and sleep for the rest of the week. No Surprises is part of the larger theme of OK Computer, which is the dehumanizing and emotionally disengaging effect that the over-saturation of technology and capitalism have on people. |

Seems to be a blend of all the comments that have been made so far. But I think underneath all of it, one of the main messages is taking responsibility for your own destiny and having a rebirth of sorts. This is definitely one of my favorite songs by the 'Dust. |
