I've got a strange sensation. I've always wondered what the hell Obstacle1 was talking about. Now I have realized that this song contains some quotations, maybe in order to let us understand. I'll try to explain what I mean (not easy, my English isn't very good...). The first is merely an instrumental one: the guitar in the beginning of Television's Marquee Moon (title track). The second one is more interesting: the first words of Obstacle1 are "I wish I could eat"; well, did you notice that these words come from Cobain's "Heart-shaped box"? And you surely know that Paul was a huge Nirvana's fan... So, now I'm wondering if Paul is making a reference to Cobain's last days, when he was lonely and tired and he was trying to break with his wife. Maybe I'm wrong, but... |

| WAIT, WAIT: all of a sudden I have had a flash, I think I've understood... Someone before has told that there are TWO different persons involved in this song, and I think he/she'right: in fact Alex uses in the first part the second person (You), than the first person (I). Well, I think that "you" is Alex's lover, and "I" is Alex himself; and the lover, I suppose, is a guy, not a girl. He has fallen in love with a girl and is cheating on Alex, but that girl doesn't want him any more. So Alex tells him "She's not so special, so look what you've done boy", meaning "done to me", 'cause his heart is broken and his lover doesn't understand haw much he is suffering ("Now I'm nailed above you, gushing from my side, it's with your sins that you have killed me, thinking of your sins I die, thinking how you'd let them touch you, how you'd never realise that I'm ripped and hang forsaken knowing never will I rise again"). I think that guy is Michael: a friend of Alex's called Michael lives in Berlin (see his blog). Didn't you notice how many German lines there are in Alex's lyrics? The title "Auf achse" is German too. I don't speak German, but isn't it possible that "Auf achse" means "Crucified" (as to the Jesus metaphore)? And think of those words ("Berlin, I love you") in "Fade together"... I think Alex has loved that boy madly and my opinion is that almost every song in the first album speaks of his love for him. | |

| Well, as TaintedGlove says, what's the matter if the guy from franz ferdinand is gay? As to that story told by Alex about two guys who got drunk at a party, I don't believe one single word. It's obvious that he says such things, and it's obvious (to me) that it isn't true. But, really, who cares? The song is a gay song, and nevertheless it's a beautiful song. | |
