David Bowie – Five Years Lyrics 19 years ago
the song is definitely about earth ending in five years.
there's a rumor that says bowie chose five years after he had a dream where his dead father told him he'd die in the next five years
i'm not even sure the song is in the voice of ziggy, who doesn't actually appear until moonage daydream, where he is actually concieved in outer space... some people think he was created from religion, combined with sexuality and romance, things that possess "soul love". soul love is the greatest thing to exist in the world and is what ziggy comes to save.
i love this album

Pink Floyd – Green Is the Colour Lyrics 19 years ago
i keep hearing "moonshine made her blind every time"
i think the song is mostly simple, in form and concept
it's about gazing through and seeing
being young and green
romantic jealousy
"envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned" is the line which makes clear the complexity of deception in something that seems so pure

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Moon, Turn the Tides...Gently Gently Away Lyrics 20 years ago
atlantis full of cheer is the lyric from 1983...(a merman should i turn to be).
although i've always felt that this song was sort of a continuation of the prior.

and... it's the albatross

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – 1983 ... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) Lyrics 20 years ago
the lyrics are tackled very well here. i think though, that so much of jimi's things are about the actual musical progression of a compilation, and here we can gain much insight into what he meant to say. halfway through the song, there is a long instrumental which to me, visually represents a mechanism struggling between the conceptual meanings of flying, falling, sinking, and swimming. this mechanism, undulating between man and machine, is jimi and he's trying to find something.. and just when he seems to become so lost, the bassline reveals a full-circle development into such a simple three note pattern --and this is where he finds it. a flute element is reintegrated and the mechanism takes off again into water and/or air.
in this simple bass chord progression, the imagine the notes going 3.3.3. 2.2.2. 111... where the periods represent stacatto or breaks. on 1 it becomes more legato, which illustrates a man's feet transforming into the fins of a mermaid.
i like to think that the bird-sounds are that of the albatross, similar to those in pink floyd's "echoes" (off meddle). the albatross is reminiscent of the sea and is alluded to in many pink floyd songs, as well as other art-rock bands.

Grateful Dead – Dark Star Lyrics 20 years ago
though the song is notoriously reminiscent of drug-related imagery, it also describes what it would look like to see a dark star implode or crash into another object in space.

Grateful Dead – Uncle John's Band Lyrics 20 years ago
i agree with madtom with the idea of the song as an analog for the vietnam war and the grateful dead themselves, but there are allusions here to baptism and the story of john the baptist. considering the dead's history with old time country music, i can imagine this song might touch on the bible story.
