over 6 months later and i have a different take i guess--or at least i'm confused. it's just one line really that throws me off: "But I would have to suppose that that’s the way life goes When the gardener decides to fall in love with the rose I’ll protect you from insects but I won’t presume to inhale you." The whole thing sounds sorta incestual. Is the gardener not the father of the rose? I keep trying to think about the relationship of the gardener to the rose--is the gardener the creator of the rose? Or just merely the protector? Both are inherently paternal roles. The rest of the lyrics are seemingly straight-forward--he's into a girl that isn't into him. So how does this line fit in? |

| Wilco – Hate It Here Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i like the kickin drugs theory--i don't know if that was jeff's intention, but the lyrics are certainly fitting. one of the oddest notions when you're quitting is that you will never, under no circumstance, do it again. sure, it's easy to fathom a month or two clean, but to see a whole clean life ahead of you--to know that the drugs won't be there to live with you anymore--it can be overwhelming. and certainly hate-able. | |

And if he’s the one that you want to go to bed with And I’m the one you want to wake up to I can put myself on acetate and make it easier for you ^this song was for a wake-up mix, for sure. |

| Cat Power – Good Woman Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| there are so many relationships in which two people bring out the worst in eachother. love doesn't consider circumstances or personality. it happens, for good or bad. though we ultimately can't choose who to love, we can choose to walk away from it. dostoevsky wrote about "returning the ticket" to god in brother's k. though he was referencing religion, it oft goes hand in hand with love. cat power is rebelling, just like ivan and so many before her have already done. | |
| David Gray – Shine Lyrics | 20 years ago |

You are all so wrong - you're just barely skimming the surface of these lyrics! When he sings "our love has faded" he isn't saying goodbye. He is aknowledging that relationships need work and that the mundane nature of life can dull even the best relationships. He doesn't abandon his love, though. Instead he says "let's go where we can shine." He knows you can't just leave your soulmate, because "your soul is the one that you can't compromise." And that true love can survive the rough times, because "for all that we struggled, for all we pretend, it don't come down to nothing except love in the end." "Take my hand", he says, not farewell. That is true love. |
