Page France – Jesus Lyrics 19 years ago
Seems to me that he is referring to his perspective of the future Judgement Day...

Much of Christian theology about J.D. in the more recent past talks about Jesus "coming down out of the heavens" to gather his "flock" and take them up with him into heaven. It tends to emphasize the "divine" nature of Christ...and how this world has little to do with heaven.

More recently, though, there has been a shift in thinking that focuses more on the incarnation of Christ. Heaven will be brought to this earth...the earth will be renewed...all of creation will join in praise...a very earthy, incarnational understanding of heaven.

As I said earlier, looking at it from this "incarnational" perspective...seems to me this is what Page France had in mind:
1. Both "the birds and bees and old fruit trees" and "the bears and bees and the nana trees" lyrics refer to all of creation singing praises to Jesus
2. My guess is that most people, when they think of Jesus' return, they think about him coming from the sky. P.F. flips this kind of thinking on its head by saying he will come "up through the ground, so dirty."
3. "Jesus will dance while we drink his wine" - reference to the celebration of heaven.
4. "we will be joy AND we will be right" - Whoever posted the lyrics on this page got them wrong. Anyway, this is another reference what it will be like in heaven.
5. heck, even the first line of the song has a biblical meaning - "I will sing a song for you" is a reference to those in heaven (and the rest of creation) always singing praises to the Lord.

My apologies for the length...

This is just my perspective, though....hope it helps...

Athlete – Wires Lyrics 20 years ago
i actually got the opportunity to talk to the band about the song, and it is about Joel's child in the hospital. many of you have commented on this and are correct.

i think though, what the song really articulates (while explaining the situation in the hospital) is a father's deep love for his child. i think it is easy to listen to this song and think about close relationships we've had that maybe we've almost lost, or other similar situations....and it certainly speaks to that.

and yet, he wrote this for his daughter. so many songs are written about relationships between lovers, significant others, etc. this song (while in some ways is similar to these other relationships) speaks of a parental love.

i'm not a parent, nor do i see this in the near future. but my hope is that, if someday i do have a child, i will love him/her with a love similar to that which is laid out in this song.

Coldplay – Politik Lyrics 20 years ago
I thought I'd share something that I found to be particularly unique about this song. Many of you have commented on the lyrics and some have certainly alluded to the music from this song. Interestingly though, I think that it is the two together than makes this song incredible.

The lyrics at the beginning of the song (whether they are political or personal...i tend to think that they are both) point to a certain unrest that Martin is feeling. For him, something isn't entirely right with the current state of things. He calls us out as listeners, asking us to consider what we believe (tell me your own politik) and to wake up and look around at what is happening (open up your eyes). Throughout the first half of the song we see a seemingly frustrated Martin singing. The music that backs up the lyrics certainly expresses this frustration, this unrest. It's almost as if the band wrote the music for the first half of this song specifically with a certain sense of disorder and chaos to compliment the lyrics.

But then, something changes. A few piano-driven chord changes lead to one of the most beautiful melodies I've heard in awhile. Whatever chaos reigned before in the song is almost instantly forgotton about. Martin profoundly (and simply) declares the focal point for which the song is pulled from its chaotic and frustrating state into a more peaceful, more hopeful, and more beautiful environment during the second half of the song. This focal point is love (but give me love over this).

There are few songs that I know of that bring the lyrics and music together so well as Politik does. I think this is, for me, why this song is so powerful, because the music has its own message in and of itself (from chaos to harmony)...
