| Jonatha Brooke – Lullaby Lyrics

From Jonatha: "Everyone needs one. This one's a little more sordid perhaps than one you'd sing to your baby. It's the grown-up calling to task Lullaby. Sleep well but beware, you will be held accountable." |

| Jonatha Brooke – Digging Lyrics

From Jonatha: "Part Appalachian folk song, part rocking out, this is a searching song. Going through a troubled time, thank god getting to the other side. Digging deep. Reconciling all your choices, for better for worse. I love that it's off kilter in the verses. Where the hell was one anyway?? But more the abandon of the choruses. When we tracked the vocal, there were three Japanese engineers visiting Bob Clearmountain's studio, so they sat in the back when I did a couple of takes. When I came into the control room to listen back, they would applaud every time. They didn't speak any English, so it was this funny awkward sense of having to perform. I suppose it made me sing a little better in the end. Nothing like three engineers to keep your pitch in line." |

| Jonatha Brooke – New Dress Lyrics
From Jonatha: "Neil Finn, what a dream. I think we sound FAB together. This is a romantic excursion. I love the image of you and your love at the window, light on. Taking off the uniform, the baggage, the old expectations, and putting on an amazing sexy new dress, no fear, just love. The arrival at that kind of love. To trust in that way for the first time." |

| Jonatha Brooke – Your House Lyrics
From Jonatha: "Is a strange combination of emotions. I thought I was saying goodbye to someone forever, at the same time I was falling in love with a new person. So it's a farewell and a hello all at once. When you fall in love, you show your new love around. These are the things I cherish, this is where I live. But also when someone thinks they are dying, they will do the same. It's a crazy, dichotomy. "All the things that you wished"." |

| Jonatha Brooke – Room In My Heart Lyrics
| 20 years ago
From Jonatha: "I wanted to get at a tender sentiment. A longing for the past but a look to the future. I wanted it to be lush, musically, that arrangement, the vocals. The approach. But also have that old school groove on the chorus. I think it does all that. And the coda, the outro takes it up a notch. It's like another song teasing you on. There's some mystery left there, and it's up to you to let it unfold on you. Marcus Miller made the song come together, his bass is the glue here." |

| Jonatha Brooke – How Deep Is Your Love? Lyrics
| 20 years ago
From Jonatha: "Funky romp. This was an experiment with a bass riff that got beautifully out of hand. I was demoing it at my friend Ryan Freeland's house and we just kept throwing more ideas in until it got really crazy. Loops, cat hair remover, me playing bass, piano, Joe Sample came in on Wurlitzer. Everything but the kitchen sink. It's all about that new infatuation, love, romance, the daring of exposure. Trying every new thing." |

| Jonatha Brooke – Linger Lyrics
From Jonatha: "Is one of those in between songs. End of a relationship, emotions still enmeshed. The thoughts of failure and redemption constantly upon you. I wrote it while I was walking through some neighborhood in Ohio, on the road. And the whole song unravelled with the pace of my footsteps. The chorus came a little later, I reworked a piece I had written for a friend's play called "Little Boys Love their Mothers". I think it's much better as Linger!" |

| Jonatha Brooke – Sally Lyrics

From Jonatha: "I got married and started working on 'Back in the Circus' right around the time my friend Sally was having her second baby. We get together whenever I'm in LA and there are these moments of longing I think on both of our parts where we see each other's lives and wonder, what if?" |

| Jonatha Brooke – Sleeping with the Light On Lyrics
| 20 years ago
From Jonatha: "I came across this song in a stack of demos I had made around the time 'Steady Pull' came out. I had completely forgotten that I had written it, and was knocked out by how haunting it was, especially in the context of 9/11. I tried re-doing a couple of the parts and adding stuff, but it really was done, didn't want anything else." |

| Jonatha Brooke – Back in the Circus Lyrics
| 20 years ago
From Jonatha herself: "This song was inspired by revisiting the original 'circus chick' from the song 'damn everything but the circus' on 'Grace in Gravity.' I just thought it was time to check in with my little alter ego and update her story. This song, and the vibe Ryan and I created for it, became the real template for the record. I wanted everything to have this intimacy, richness, immediacy." |
