Tori Amos – Big Wheel Lyrics 18 years ago
(If you're under 18, please skip this comment.)

Maybe I'm projecting way too much, but I read "kinky sex" all over this song.

"I’ve been on the other side/Got my lips smacked/Now they’re dry"
She has been a dominant, got whatever she wanted, now she's a submissive and is left waiting for what she needs.

"You think I am your possession"
Another reference to dom/sub relationship.

"You’re messing with a Southern girl/But my recipe is on (...)/But baby I don’t need your cash/So baby maybe I’ll let your/Big wheel turn my fantasy"
She is in that situation because she wants to. She's letting him dominate her, because it's her fantasy. He sounds like some hot shot executive (the cash reference), on top of being dominant, but she's not intimidated by him - it's all in good fun.

As for the big wheel... there is such a thing in kinky "scenes". One person is tied up to a big wheel, which rotates through water, so the other controls when she/he can breathe.

"Drinking down your pain" (he does that to somehow aleviate a pain of his own?),"wash it away"... references to water.

"I've been on my knees but you’re so hard"
Ahem. Besides the obvious explicit reference, it can also mean that she's doing anything he wants, but he's still being rough on her.

"Won’t be pleased that you/Take me, take me in"
Another explicit one...

"I-I-I am an M-I-L-F"
Milf... consult your sex dictionary! ;-)

Lara Fabian – Love By Grace Lyrics 19 years ago
OMG... I can't believe nobody commented on this one! This is a *beautiful* song, very sad and emotional. It's about a serious fight - and possibly breakup - between two lovers, but the woman doesn't want to give up on them.

"People saw me with another guy, and they are talking. But it's not what you are thinking! Don't take their word, and don't rush for conclusions; listen my version of the story first."

Diana Krall – They Can't Take That Away From Me Lyrics 19 years ago
She met an amazing guy in an old-style party. They had tea, later had dinner, there was singing and dancing involved. All the while she was enchanted by him - his looks, manners, everything about him. He was pretty impressed too, considering his beaming smile and the fact that they danced 'till 3am. But their families (or her family, or someone else) didn't allow the romance to continue. Still, she feels that he changed her life in those brief hours; and the fact of having met him was so spectacular, that it makes her happy already. And nobody can take that from her.

Diana Krall – Let's Face The Music And Dance Lyrics 19 years ago
Forget Diana Krall - there are much better versions of this song, especially Renato Russo & Frank Sinatra. I LOVE this song. It says, "these are happy times, but sad times are gonna come. So let's enjoy while we can." The sad times can be many things... Old age, disease, war, pain, considerable trouble... This song reminds e not to take things/people for granted, and appreciate what I have.

Billy Dean – Somewhere In My Broken Heart Lyrics 20 years ago
I can't believe you guys - always leaving the BEST songs uncommented! :-P

(I love this one sung by Renato Russo, by the way.) Once there was a happy couple; one person decided to leave, the other got his heart broken. He's admitting how much this hurts to him, but says "Go ahead; I hate your decision, but I wish you the very best, and somehow I'll manage to survive. I hope you find whatever it is that you're looking for. And I hope that, later on, you realize that *I* am what you're looking for.

Barbra Streisand – If I Loved You Lyrics 20 years ago
This is such a GORGEOUS song, especially when sung by Renato Russo. He's saying: "if I loved you, that would do us no good, because I would be too shy/scared to tell you, and you would never know." But I don't know why he's saying this. Perhaps he DOES love her, and but can't say it directly, so round in circles he goes...

Oh Lord, I can't believe that nobody commented on this song!!! It's one of my ALL TIME favorites!!! Renato Russo's version is the best. To me, this is about losing love, and trying to seem/feel strong, "Oh, I'm doing just fine without you, no problem!" but then he confesses "yeah, I'm fine, just not in the Spring - because something reminds me of you - or when it rains, or when I hear your name, or..." and then he's forced to face it: he's not getting along well at all!

Nick Drake – Clothes Of Sand Lyrics 20 years ago
I only know Renato Russo's version, which I love. To me, this is a song about death, the death of someone he loved. To be dressed in clothes of sand means to be buried. To be taken far from my land (land of the living) and he "stayed much too long" (wished to die to be close to that person again).

"clothes of sand have covered your face" - again, an allusion to be buried;

"given you meaning but taken my place" - We tend to give value to people after they die, not always noticing it when they're alive. But it "took his place", he cannot have her anymore.

M. Ward – One Life Away Lyrics 20 years ago
So the dead people, buried, listen to the sounds above ground. The "singer" is dead too, and he's talking to his "grave neighbors", telling them that his girlfriend is still alive, but eventually they'll be together again, 'cause she's "only one life away".

M. Ward – Undertaker Lyrics 20 years ago
Such a beautiful song. It reminds me of a quote: "Love cannot be beautiful without an excess. Either one loves too much, or he doesn't love enough."

But I certainly wouldn't want a man that extreme loving me! "Life with you is a fairy tale come true, Pollyanna and sunshine, but if you go away I'd rather die"??? That'd be scary! :-)

Terry Reid – To Be Treated Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is absolutely gorgeous! So sad, poignant, beautiful. It played on “The Devil’s Rejects”, on the scene where they were hurt and captured – the meaning fit perfectly.

“Oh, we are what we are when in danger”

We are reduced to our human condition when we’re in danger. No masks, no poses, no power – just our primitive selves.

“And we are as we stand head in hands”

When danger comes, you briefly support your head on your hands, thinking ‘Oh, sh*t.’

“When a friend brings to light on a cold silver knife
You can stare your fate right into his hands”

A friend is the one betraying you and bringing you danger, threatening you with a knife, and your fate depends on him.

“Things just stay the same as they've always been
Some of us are out to win / And some of us are out just to aim”

Being in this situation is almost expected... He/they always aimed for one thing, but always wound up losing. Things never went his/their way.

“Oh we are what we are when we're praying
In our way of seeking some light”

Praying to find an escape, a solution for his/their life-and-death situation.

”May the mission bells still ring of the colorful dream
In the faith that everyone will be treated right”

Expecting to be treated right by his/their enemy, he knows, is just a colorful dream. It’s “a hopeless fight”. It’s over. But maybe if metaphorical bells ring and a miracle happens...

Terry Reid – Seed Of Memory Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this is a patriotic song. How dreams come out of ashes, meaning, people have to fight battles and die in order for dreams/ideals to be achieved. But, for dying in battle, one somehow becomes immortal to his country.

"So Let The Winds Of Change
That Rearrange The Country
Let It Also Sow A Seed Of Memory"

Change is good, let it happen and rearrange things; but keep the memory, never forget how this country used to be. Don't forget the people that died for it.

Anyone else has ideas, please?

Camera Obscura – Let Me Go Home Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song, it makes me happy every time. Great sound! But I never thought of its meaning until now... I think it's about this couple planning to go out, but they drink a little wine and have sex instead. They wind up never going out - they continue having sex and drinking until "daylight appears". Oh, and he even provides details: they do it on the floor and on the stairs. They're drunk and clumsy and break a vinyl record at some point. And, apparently, the blue-eyed girl is the boss: he can only return to his own home when she says so.

Devendra Banhart – At the Hop Lyrics 20 years ago
Someone he loves is leaving for good. He's desperate to remain close somehow, to be remembered. "Put me in your suitcase"... I used to daydream of stuffing myself on a suitcase and sending myself to the man I loved (he lived far). He's pleading to be remembered, to continue being part of that person's world - by "dry dreams" (as a friend) or "wet dreams, if you haven't yet" (in a sexual way, but he isn't sure if that person ever thought of him in that way). I can't think of the other symbols.
