I don't think she's whoring herself out for clothes per-se. It's more like whoring herself to get attention that she didn't receive from her parents, the clothes and toys being the only expressions of love she understands. |

He's saying "merdre merdre" ("merde" roughly means "shit" in the various romantic languages). "Merdre" is also the first line in the play "Ubu Roi," from which the band took their name. |

Lepidotera, the first line of the song is slurred in every sing le version, often deliberately. There's no definitive answer. The line "laughter guns" is, I believe from the Hyper Enough single. There's a debate between two disc jockey's over the first line, that is one of the suggestions. |

It was originally a song about a lion tamer, but the guitarist rewrote everything he didn't like. Which was nearly everything. |

According to "Rip it up and Start Again," this was written as an excercise. It was to be a narrative 100 syllables long, but Newman couldn't cut it down any further. |

| Belle & Sebastian – I'm a Cuckoo Lyrics

"Breaking off is misery
I see a wilderness for you and me
Punctuated by philosophy
And a wondering how things could’ve been"
I always thought it was about being around somebody you've just broken up with, but are still attached to emotionally. You know it's a bad idea, but you still want to talk to the person. |

This song seems to be about dating somebody while wanting/waiting to reunite with somebody else. I get the impression that the narrator is waiting for his ex to break up with her new boyfriend so they will get back together. |

| Fugazi – Song #1 Lyrics
|
It has always seemed to me that this song is Fugazi announcing themselves to the music scene.
"Song #1 is not a fuck you song"
Hardcore punk was largely political, but when you're shouting for approximatley one minute you can't get much deeper than "Fuck you"
"I'll save that for later on"
But hey, Fugazi isn't entirely against saying "Fuck you"
"Everybody's talking about their hometown scenes and hurting people's feelings in their magazines you want to know what it all means? It's nothing"
Here they're decrying the gossip of the 'scene.' People in any community ultimately seemt to lose sight of the intention and end up being mad at one another behind each other's backs.
"fighting for a haircut? then grow your hair crying for the music? i doubt you really care looking for an answer? you can find it anywhere"
Kids at hardcore shows would routinely get beaten up simply for having long hair. MacKaye then points out how shallow the scene had become, that music was secondary to the politics. |

| Fugazi – Nice New Outfit Lyrics

This song has nothing to do with fashion, it's an indictment of the first Gulf War. Those of us who remember it probably remember the news footage of the then-new "smart bombs;" which could be programmed to fly down the chimmney of a factory to destroy it from the inside. Piccioto is viewing this as an even more dehumanizing warfare. |
