You should all discuss your questions about faith with appropriate people (preachers, rabies or what ever). You will be (maybe, at least I was) surprised when you find them to be very intelligent people. Who will, I'm sure of it, do anything to help you out with your doubts and fears and maybe even discus about this great dm song!
All I can say as a god worshiping but irreligious person (so don’t put my opinion next to any religion label) is very simple and you probably heard it more than once. Maybe the God took the girl so we could have this song, so that Depeche Mode would have even greater international glory, give a lecture to all of 16 year old girls, feed the beavers or what ever seriously… We can only guess. I’m tempted now to say that this world is the best world possible but I will sustain my self from further comments. |

Although the song meaning seems to be obvious it always strikes me as a fact that he is desperately trying to get to her, and even though he is trying not to give any significance to it, he finds her very attractive. Also he states that he knows HIS kind (yes you can understand this in different ways but mine is as acceptable as others), now these little things that steal away from him… It always reminds me about Hamlet and Ophelia. Hamlet told Ophelia to run to the monastery because all men were sinners (especially in Hamlet’s Denmark) and make a sincere gesture of repentance for his own sins. Let’s say that Hamlet was just a little bit more sinful, would he advise Ophelia to run to the monastery OR would he like Gore (for example) advice her to stay with him as he knows, feels inside him, that he has to be at least better than all the alternatives. And by doing so he becomes the same thing he despises, he gets the girl just like the rest would (with his persuasive ways), except if he suddenly starts feeling the same guilt like Kevin Spacey in American Beauty, which in my theory is impossible. Subconsciously he knows he is just one of them and that is the reason why he is focusing all of his strength not to think about that and dresses his lustful needs in a savior knight’s suit. Maybe he is better then others, but he is definitely not showing it.
The best part of the song is, by my opinion, when he says “it should be better” “it should be better with you” and deluded by his selfish feeling completely reveals that there are no generous gestures of charity and that he expects to get something in return. For a conclusion I’m not saying that she won’t be happy with him, and I’m not even saying that he is a pig or whatever, basically things like this are normal and whether she is going to be happy (also if he is going to be happy) doesn’t have nothing to do with “who will get her” it’s all in themselves. I mean if she wants she could be happy with “the rest of his kind” (like the girls who date their own age) but if she wants to give her self to a much older man with all of its consequences, let her be happy... |

Hm. I wasn't sure if I should make a comment on these lyrics but I figured it might be helpful to do so. No I'm not going to say that almost every kind of modern (non classical) music had been criticized by all sorts of people who believed that it's actually spoiling the kids and generally no art. Instead I would advise you all to read Hesse’s Steppenwolf which, I am sure, will be helpful to everyone in more than just this little, we could call it insignificant, view on music. Talking meaning good, progress but basically the birth of the questions (ok lets call philosophy what basically is life with its ever following thought and ?). Yes, as many artists scientists, poets, athletes... god damned people experienced problems of existence caused buy the lack of answers to they primal question and not only that (the second reason is basically the first) but also the comfort numbness of others. Ohh god save the trivial people who won't take their grip with fate (there is just too much of them, just turn on the TV). And you'll see as if we're going nowhere. But remember (this part always makes me want to cry) all you have to do is keep talking...
This song strikes me so hard because of its truth that is evident in life. I found it in myself, religion and science (for me just the first was necessary but the other are essential for explaining to other people, to try and make them think).
I hope my comment made people who love this song love it even more and the people who don't start appreciating it more...
The female vocals always remind me of my ex girlfriend (no she wasn't black). Basically if you don't understand what I just said, it can go like this: If you're down by the way things are going don't give up, but keep struggling.
This sentence is probably the greatest evidence of truth in this song. I'm sure if we shorten the moral of this song further we may stumble on something immeasurable as a zero. Pure string of divine logic or lunacy?

There are reasons for everything. I could say a truth and later prove it to be wrong. I think I understand this song but I can't say it with certainty because I've never felt the man who sold the world (the song). I can logically develop any meaning (except the alien story. I usually don't make fun of peoples believes but this was just too good to pass. In the end his idea will probably be true too, in some way) but I give the advantage to actually feeling the meaning and seeing it trough yourself. I must admit that I envy Kurt a little bit because I think he made it. |

It's a common belief that doors' lyrics don't have much meaning and that if they do they are mostly about sex drugs alcohol and hippie stuff. This is mainly the fault of the fans (because the doors are widely spread with a large auditorium) but even if the doors members didn't (don't) know the meaning of their lyrics and wrote songs just to sell (yeah right) or why they were high or what ever I still am able to give them a meaning (not to all of course). Reading all the doors comments here made me sad... |

Thank god! I thought I became a dead tuna and moved on into a can... This is probably the only nirvana lyric that I thought I understood and reading the last three pages (since I'm not a nirvana fan) made me feel too smart. I agree with rodonious187 but only the first part. Read his comment. It is a very good detailed description, if it wasn't for him I thought I would need to roll up my sleeves. I was experiencing the similar symptoms few years before and discovered Dumb, my emotion was identical. The meaning is basically simple but there was probably no other way for him to explain it to you.
The depression part is what I disagree on. It is more like this. Watch out, this is going to be simple. I think a lot. Other people take things for granted. Their jokes are simple their thoughts can't even grasp my lowest worries. Their brains are filled with trivial stuff, worthless trash they feed on. Wake up in the morning, I'm doing the same things they do, I laugh to their jokes, do drugs, forget about "the great worries" of my beautiful mind. Damn, am I really dumb (me feeling like this and them feeling like that always) or maybe the only difference between us is than they are generally happy and I’m not. Is this happiness?
In my explanation there is very little space for depression. Since I don’t know almost anything about Curt I stick to my own experience and song analyzing. It’s evident that the subject of this song is rarely happy and constantly in thought. He wonders if these two are the same. This question arose from a personal philosophy which gave no answers and left him with more questions and ifs than he started with. This philosophy may directly lead to the problem of existentialism and then further to a greater depression (eventually suicide) but not necessarily. Lyrics indicate that subject is lacking what is commonly known as happiness, but a lack of happiness isn’t necessarily sadness (depression etc.). So in my thoughts you were all right (except the people who were quarreling) but it’s a real shame that none of you (except rodonious) can feel it and for rodonious187, I hope you move forward from the depression. If you need help don’t hesitate to contact me, that is if you ever read this, and feel a need not to be depressed any more. That goes for the rest of people who generally understood and felt or feel this and need help. I hope that my understandings of dumb (although I’m not a nirvana fan) will make you at least think and that way became useful (not a complete waste of time).

Everything else can and doesn’t have to be true. The only assumption that I’m almost sure of is that suicidal intention can be manifested even before the person it self is aware of it. I am not a nirvana fan and I'm sure that most of you understand nirvana better than me but still I got very interested with the fact that non of you even asked yourself why this song found it's place on unplugged. That is the most interesting thing about this song for me. It seems that curt him self found another meaning of his song. I can only guess if it was nostalgia for the old days, or lack of friends no matter how plain they are or their problems seem at first. Maybe just like this song, plain reasons but a strong emotion... Just guessing... And I would like to add that I don't agree with one of the posts which said that only the artists know the actual meaning of their lyrics. Obviously that person never had an artistic experience. |
