It could be about a girl, but the music is symbolizing his current addiction problems when he recorded this up in malibu. one guitar part eventually overcomes the other throughout the coarse of the song which references to his drug addiction(i think it was heroine at the time) overcoming his "normal" life. im pretty sure him and the producer were on heroine during recording and mixing for this song, i think its kinda cool, by far one of his better songs. |

I first heard this song in the royal tenenbaums which was in the most depressing scene of the movie (luke wilson "attempting" suicide) and instantly fell in love with it. Somehow listening to this song without watching someone try to kill themself can be even more depressing by elliott singing in the dark and beautiful way he does. I never thought depression so much fun :-)
BTW it takes a real man to stab himself in the chest twice, most people would quit after just once. |

If you like bright eyes, you should definately be an elliott smith fan. He poors out even more emotion into his music than bright eyes yet still sings in the same dark/emotional style. Some good tunes would be Pitseleh, The Biggest Lie, 2:45 am, and Ballad of a Big Nothing. It's hard to rate songs by bands who put out an emotional ballad for pretty much every song but for bright eyes and elliott that seems to be the case. Have some easy listening and enjoy : ) |
