In the salsify mains of what was thought but unsaid All the calcified arithmetists were doing the math It would take a calculate blow to the head To light the eyes of all the harmless sociopaths Oh, arm and arm we are the harmless sociopaths Oh, arm and arm with all the harmless sociopaths Calcium mines are buried deep in your chest Oh, calcium mines you buried deep in your chest Ooh, you're deep in a mine Ooh, calcium mine, oh Let's get out of here, past the atmosphere Squint your eyes and no one dies or goes to jail Past the silver bridge, oh the silver bridge Wearing nothing but a onesies and a veil Ooh, deep in a mine Ooh, calcium mine Arm and arm, we are the harmless sociopaths Arm and arm with all the harmless sociopaths In the calcium mines buried deep in your chest Oh, the calcium mines buried deep in your chest Ooh, deep in a mine, oh no Calcium mines, oh no So let's get out of here, past the atmosphere Squint your eyes and one dies or goes to jail past the silver bridge, oh the silver bridge Wearing nothing but a onesie and a veil oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no |

I knew I recognized the Latin lyrics as soon as I saw them. They're from a well-known 20th-century piece of music, "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff. "Carmina Burana" (the text), from what I understand, is a collection of poems and songs written by boisterous monks in the 13th century, in Latin and archaic German. Very good stuff right there - look it up in your favorite p2p program. The song that everyone probably knows is "O Fortuna"; it's used a lot in movie trailers and various commericals. Anyway, these lyrics are from a different movement, "Circa mea pectora". Here's what I found in a Google translation (from http://www.davidparlett.co.uk/cburana/cb5amor.html): Circa mea pectora multa sunt suspiria de tua pulchritudine, que me ledunt misere Down inside the soul of me sighs consume the whole of me oh, for all your loveliness, cause of all my heart's distress Iam amore virginali totus ardeo. Now I have a darling who has set my heart aglow: Amor volat undique captus est libidine. Love is flitting all around with desire conjointly bound, Iam amore virginali totus ardeo. Circa mea pectora multa sunt suspiria De tua pulchritudine, que me ledunt misere. Tui lucent oculi sicut solis radij, Sicut splendor fulguris, qui lucem donat tenebris. Now I have a darling who has set my heart aglow: Down inside the soul of me sighs consume the whole of me oh, for all your loveliness, cause of all my heart's distress How the sparkling of your eyes dims the sun that scours the skies! like a lightning streak it flings brightness down on shadowed things These translations were just copy-pasted to line up with the original Latin; I haven't edited it from the webpage I gratuitously stole from. |

| How appropriate that these lyrics were posted on 9/11. The mood of the song doesn't exactly match the sentiment but the lyrics most certainly do. | |

yankeeboystevel: And this isn't a great song? As far as similarities to Bennie and the Jets goes, lyrically and melodically, these songs are distinct, not to mention arrangement (as in the instruments used - this song doesn't prominently feature piano) and the qualities of the singer's voice (Colin Meloy and Elton John). Sure, they both have that vampy feel (with the short, heavy chords) but other than that they're barely similar. If you want two songs with the same tune, try Huey Lewis's "I Want A New Drug" and Ray Parker, Jr.'s "Ghostbusters". |

| Youth Group – Shadowland Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Hrm...this is really a great song, but the lyrics are a bit of a conundrum. I'll take a stab at them... The whole first stanza (in the song, before the repetition of shadowland) describes, to me, the experience of graduating from high school, and heading out on your own. Only it seems the narrator didn't go to college - "I was a tourist with no story, lost in this purgatory...the PTA won't bless me" - It sounds like he stayed at home, and noticed all the changes that began to take place - "I walked down those familiar streets, now filled with circus freaks". Conversely, it could be that after the narrator graduated from high school he came back to visit his home town, and was shocked at all the changes that took place. The similie at the end ("My plans are as useful as a baby's hand") stumps me. It seems to be ironic, but it's just not that great of a similie, or at least not good enough to convey its intended meaning. The second stanza (in the song, after the first repetition of "shadowland") is a much more reminiscient and personal recollection of a relationship the narrator had with a girl during high school. There are a lot of things in here that seem to be symbolic of memories the narrator had. I don't want to analyze each line in depth, but overall the sense is one of desire to get back what you've lost. The final stanza (at the very end of the song) seems to be an overview of some random things, but look at all of the items except the last: most of them are fads in health, or at least related to health. Perhaps the narrator had health problems all his life, and found solace in the comfort of his high school friend. "Shadowland" symbolizes a dark place or time in the narrator's life ("I want to fload upon my memories, not sink into the gloaming [dark] seas of shadowland"). "Shadowland" seems chaotic, or at least, unplanned ("there's no plans in shadowland"). Overall a wonderful song, just don't try to analyze the lyrics ;) |

| Blues Traveler – Hook Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Ironic that this song became so popular. | |
| Damien Rice – The Blower's Daughter Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Does anyone else hear the door opening/closing at around 0'08 or 0'09? I don't think it has any meaning or significance in the song (I'm sure when they were recording this song, during this take, someone left/walked into the studio a bit late) | |
| Muse – Citizen Erased Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Could easily be considered Muse's own Bohemian Rhapsody. | |
