This is one of their most powerful songs. I see it an individual's personal experience of God in their own life. They begin by realizing their own powerlessness, and accepting it ("I am nothing / in the dark"). After they surrender their ego, they are able to accept the grace of God ("and the clouds burst / to show daylight"). They are overwhelmed by it, and it gives them a fresh perspective on life ("ooo and the sun shines / on this heart of mine"), to the point that they wonder how they ever got along without it. They feel that they are being 'lifted up' ("on a hilltop / on a skyrise") and set apart/consecrated - ("like a first born" - see Numbers 18:15-16 in the Bible). The purpose of the redemption is that they may be ready to fight evil. The final part of the song is a bit more difficult. The extreme repetition suggest a gradual movement of the redeemed person's soul toward heaven - hence the "breaking through the daylight." They are going to the source of the daylight, which is God. The daylight mentioned throughout the song represents love. |
