this song is obviously about leaving someone behind. "And the wind sounds as if the world's sighing and the moon's just a torn fingernail" shows how he thinks everything is wrong. he doesnt want to see anymore, see the world and what has happened to a relationship with someone he used to love. the chorus "so so so it's so damn slow" means to me that he can't get over someone. the feelings slowly fade away. if you have to stop loving someone because they make you stop, losing your feelings happens sometimes way too damn slowly. "and the bright-eyed choke on ambition." says that the ones who seem naive are the ones who always want more without seeing the consequences. "and the old folks circle their graves" means to me that when you get older, you stop living. but "the young ones are busy destroying their names", which says that the young people on earth just try to be someone else all the time. if you're young, you try to figure out who you want to be and what, therefore you sometimes lose your name in a way. to the singer though, it's nothing positive, because they "destroy" their names. young ones try everything to be "different" and in the end they lose their personality and don't see what really is important in life. judging young ones and old ones , he comes to say something about the person he loved/loves. "and you're still just wasting away". the reason why the song says something about people in general and how they fuck up their lives is, that in the end the one who the singer has to leave behind, will be one of them but for now he is still missing that person."i sit and watch the screen for a message...." it shows perfectly how he wants this person to come back and save everything and change what happened. you wait and wait and nothing happens. the feelings are still there and still no word from that person...which explains the chorus again "so damn slow" the last verse again shows the feelings he still has for that person. he just wishs that the person will be okay without him. "i hope you're learning to listen..." this is not only the wish that things will eventually be fine, but also an advice. the person he leaves never listened, never knew and found what he/she missed. he suffers not being with that person or simply hearing from that person and how the relationship turned out to be and now he thinks of how life will be for that person. he just hopes it will be fine , yet that wish shows how insecure he is about it. "And my head hurts if I don't sit still It's an itch that I'll never stop scratching It's a hole that I'll never quite fill" the last words again say that he is not over it. he thinks about everything way too much but nothing changes. "a hole that i'll never quite fill"...the person meant too much to him that now there is a hole and maybe there are questions left but he will never get answers. i could be wrong, but that's what came to my mind when i listened to it. seriously one of the best songs i've ever heard. |

this song is my favorite radiohead song. I like it especially because of the lyrics. to me it is about 2 people, who deserve something "bad" happening to them because that's what they did to others. "karma police" is supposed to get them. first though i thought the meaning must be different because "karma" describes not really what people deserve according to their actions NOW but more what they did in their lives before. Karma is something everyone has and brings into a new life. that way it wouldnt really make sense to say "karma will get you because you did me harm". but then again they sing/say "karma POLICE" that way it makes a lot more sense . the karma police should make the people get what they deserve in their lives NOW. the lines "this is what you'll get ..when you mess with us" show how convident they are about them being right and about them knowing who deserves to be caught by the karma police. in the end though "for a minute there I lost myself" they are aware of what they are seriously saying and they realize that wishing someone "bad luck" is not right. to me it means he only lost hisself for a minute there / he didnt think about what he really said. (but honestly, the idea of a "karma police" is a great one to me. i personally hold on to something like that..everyone gets what he/she deserves.) great song. |

this song means a lot to me and it shows the feelings someone has to deal with when a loved person died. my dad died 5 months ago and it came totally out of the blue.. and this song makes me cry every time, therefore I can tell I've cried about 1000 oceans. she sings "and if it seems i'm floating in the darkness well i can't believe that i would keep keep you from flying " to me the whole crying makes you feel like you live in a black hole. a black..nothing. "floating in the darkness" you go through every day but it's just like living the day in darkness. for people who believe that there is no real end and there is more to come after all of this here on earth, especially the line "i can't believe i would keep, keep you from flying" is meaningful. me as one of those persons. you know you want to change reality so bad but your crying doesnt make them feel better and therefore they can't really go and find peace. you keep them with your tears. the rules are clear. things that happened can't be made undone , everyone knows that but yet you wake up in the morning thinking that this just didnt happen. you'd follow the person you lost..no matter where you'd need to go, you'd follow them just to be with them. the next thing the song mentions is the question of what happens after death. what will we become? will you still remember me? will you see me? or will we all go our own way? or will it be the way it used to be? will things that happened on earth still remain after you left the world? in the end you would do anything to sail him home. crying 1000 oceans is one of the more easy things in my eyes though... |
