"Poker Face" was written by RedOne and Gaga while the music has been produced by RedOne. Gaga stated in an interview that "Poker Face" was written by her as a pop song and was a tribute to her rock 'n roll boyfriends. She also stated that the main idea behind the song was sex and gambling. In an interview with UK's Daily Star, Gaga noted of the song, "It's about a lot of different things. I gamble but I’ve also dated a lot of guys who are really into sex and booze and gambling, so I wanted to write a record my boyfriends would like too." In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, when asked about the meaning of the line "bluffin' with my muffin", Gaga explained that it really was a metaphor for her vagina. She explained, "Obviously, it's my pussy's poker face! I took that line from another song I wrote but never released, called "Blueberry Kisses." It was about a girl singing to her boyfriend about how she wants him to go down on her, and I used the lyric. [Gaga sings] "Blueberry kisses, the muffin man misses them kisses." During her Fame Ball tour performance at Palm Springs, California on April 11, 2009, Gaga explained to the crowd the true meaning behind the term "Poker Face" used in the song. She suggested that the song dealt with her personal experience with bisexuality. The idea behind the song was to be with a man but fantasizing about a woman, hence the man in the song needs to read her "Poker Face" to understand what is going through her mind. |

me too, iamthenightstars! this song is just totally amazing, it's so easy to get lost in. i love to put this on when i'm on the bus and just totally let myself get taken away by the song. even better when you're high. :D i don't really know what the song is a metaphor for, beyond false opportunities, but the lyrics obviously describe the greek siren, down to the letter. "just cause you feel it" seems to be a metaphor for things you think are good, but they aren't as good as they seem. |

i think there's love in there, but also "i push things through my mouth and get refilled through my ears" i think this goes along with the idea that the heart (your gut feeling, your emotion) conflicts with your brain (reason), and that line above talks about the ideas other people are giving him, what they think is right. but his heart is taking over, and that's the point of the song. the most obvious emotion that can do such a thing is love. while "cliff" and "bitter" suggest a suicide by jumping, i also though they could still work out to go along with the rest of the song; i got the idea from reading one piece, where a bitter whale spends his days crashing into an island's earth foundation because his friends had deserted him. perhaps the buffalo isn't jumping, but crushing his head on the rock. it would do more harm to the buffalo, but wouldn't be good for the cliff either. |

It just talks about how religious folk waste life, mostly due to the fact that any religion's God conveniently forbids enjoying a lot of everything worth enjoying while we're alive on this earth. | |

I always thought it was about murder. The first verse explains a bad situation, the "chorus" shows the aftermath. The second verse doesn't QUITE fit, but I'm sure you could twist it if you wanted, i.e. a killing spree. Would juxtapose nicely with the calmness of the music. |

Sounds like religion, to me. He's wondering how much fear has steered the wheel; that is, how often fear may have taken over and driven him off the righteous path. The rest just falls together. "with open arms and open eyes" means he has woken up from the obliviousness religion often traps people who are a part of the atrocity known as organised religion. And, of course, "be one of the hive" and "water over wine" are just easy. Finally, "that I should be the one behind the wheel" means he wants to do what he can to take control of his own life, without letting fatalism/God be his autopilot. This conflicts with the fear, I know, but I think it makes more sense. Sorry if I offended anyone religious, but I can't stand organised religion, for many, many reasons. Religious ideas are great; opressing them on the world isn't. |

The song sounds more like cheating to me; maybe a precursor to Evil, timeline wise? The first set of lyrics sound like a meeting for sex only. However, with the wire part, you never know; it could be, say, a sting operation to CATCH a cheater? eh? I'm grasping here. I think the best part of this song is the "gazing eye" bit, because the guitar buildup and the vocals there are just so awesome, I really love that. |

I still don't understand what the lyric "Hey wait Great smile Sensitive to fate, not denial" means. It looks, on the surface, to be a simple comment to someone who's cute. It could, combined with the third line, be referenced to The Stranger... but I've never read it, so I didn't make that connection. I like the cheating angle though. Here's a long shot. What if he killed Rosemary, his old girlfriend, and is now with Sandy, the cutest girl he's recently met? This would explain "why can't we just look the other way". But nothing else, I know. Like I said, it's a long shot. |

"I'm just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl" references all the people who are just sitting there in their cars waiting while other people are fighting to stem the problems in society. -------------- I could start a whole new rant on this, but I'll try to keep it short. What the goddamn hell did Tiananmen Square accomplish? It accomplished just about the same thing as the November 2nd protests of George Bush that people tried to rally all across the country; I happened to be in Downtown Portland [Oregon] when this area was rallying it's section. The whole protest didn't even amount to a front page headline. It didn't do anything. I'm all for rallying against something, especially Bush in this case, but unfortunately, there isn't a goddamn thing we can do about it, and protesting isn't going to change that. ---- With that aside, I have only one thing to add to this; I've always believed that "...just sitting in my car..." was more of a paraphrased line from someone who happened to be in Tiananmen Square during the protest, but was not part of the protest, and was killed anyway. |

hmm. i never really liked the second half of the song myself, because to me it just kind of takes the beauty of the first half of the song, the slow, melodic beauty, and blows its face off with a sawn off shotgun. which could very well be the point. i was always confused though, because when lyrics first came up, it was spelled "sons," so i took it in a biblical sense, i.e. cain and abel. apparantley the actual liner notes differ, and its hard to relate cain and abel to the rest of the song, but i dug that one small hint that maybe there was a biblical depth to this song. it's still one of the best on the album, though. |
