Barbeau: I think you're basically correct. But the antiwar feeling in this song has to do with it's deep human feeling ("the blues") mixed with cynicism towards Bush world (" They fill us full of lies everyone buys About what it means to be a soldier"). We got the existential questioning in "Tell me how God choose, whose prayers He refuse") and we then the naturalistic disillusion ("m not fighting for justice I am not fighting for freedom"). So it's neither a republican or democart song about the war in Iraq. It's a song about American boys who have once again been put into a strange, deadly place, for reasons only God can fathom. And as the song recognises, it's the same God on both sides, after all. The final verse is as touching as anything in the Vietnam era songs: "And the summer, it too will fade And with it brings the winter's frost, dear And I know we too are made Of all the things that we have lost here" |

| Calexico – Roka (Danza de la Muerte) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This is one of those songs that sends instant cold shivers down your back. Unbelievable. But what it is about, or is just aesthetically pleasing collection of musical and lyrical phrases? I might be completely wrong, but my first impression was that the song is about endemic violence both sides of the Mexican border. Drug trade, illegal immigration and the prison gangs are dancing this dance of death, and innocents are drawn into it. I don't mean to say that this is straightforward "political" or "message" song: far from it. But it's hard not to think about these "waves of desperation". | |

"cruel, heartless reign chasing short term gains right down to the warning signs" I believe there are strong allusions to the Bush era. But there's also this (paradoxically) both more personal and more general dimension. It refers to internal split in a person, basically any of us, who finds him/herself torn between ideals and reality. Self-deceit and self-conceit take place. As a result, a person or a nation might find itself sceptical and weary towards it's own lifestyle. "weather flees underground" It's quite difficult not to read this as a reference to Weather Undergound. Weather fleas underground? |

| Tricky – Hell Is Round the Corner Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| One of the absolutely brilliant songs, but what the hell does it all mean? I'm not native English speaker, much less a native Jamaican English speaker. Album didn't have printed lyrics, so for a many many years I somehow thought he's saying "Nicaraguan soil". I thought it was a political song about people who move from Caribbean area to England. But apparently my impression was wholly wrong! Now I'm baffled about what these lyrics actually mean. | |

I think crystal canyons refer to glass plated skyscrapers. What do you think? Surely "crystal" might refer to drugs, but was this word used for crack cocaine back in the days when the song was written? |

| What does this refer to?: "They favorite 50 Cent song's 12 Questions". Isn't the 50 Cent song called 21 Questions? | |
