From Maurice, the songwriter's very own words: "The song 'Fantasy' is motivated about escapism in the sense of living on a world that is untrue, a world that is unjust, a world that is very selfish and envious, there is a place that everyone can escape to which is their own fantasy. I had to write the song in the sense of sharing this place with people. It's an escape mechanism." |

Yet another interpretation.
It could represent a person once powerful, someone with a voice, a message, and a purpose in life. Be it a career, a business, a family or some other venture, by some twist of fate or stroke of bad luck, that purpose, joy, or expression was lost. Watching all you've achieved in your lifetime be taken from you, leaving a gaping void, a wasteland where your life once was - it's painful. For a person who's used to success, who's used to easily filling up that empty page, trying to rediscover the power of positive thinking and the ability to move forward after such devastation can be terrifying. Starting over, finding passion again, turning "water into wine" as you once did... it's not easy to get back up after being knocked down like that. Withering away from the world isn't the answer, but for a time, it is an option while one's heart and soul heals after being ripped away.
The world is what you create. You can wither away, or accept the loss and find a way to fill that empty space. |

Someone, probably/possibly terminally ill, is about to leave this Earth. The song is sung from the first person, as though he/she is or has watched a loved one pass away, realizing that he/she now has to go on without this beloved person in his/her life. Horrible, but it's something we will all face at some point in our lives. |
